  1. hey Tim, I think you may be right with what you said. I also think that I am a nob for leaving them in the MAGs, especially since I have number of those vacum bags and empty cans floating around... I guess I am wondering what effect might condesation have on the film itself? Also, regarding that 'uneven' stock, is it best to try and correct the 'uneven' bit with hands whilst loading, or would anyone recommend slaming the can (before opening) onto the flat surface so that it flateness? Does that make sense? I am sort of scared of the later option and might try and feel with my hands how 'uneven' it is... I think slaming it might cause issues but maybe soft taps wouldnt? Dam, i just dont have cash to buy another 2 rolls for this short on top of other costs.... hence why i wodner what condesation does to the look of the film, in case i still decide to shoot with it over video. Oh and is there a way of taking it out of the fridge, moving to say an eski with just a bit warmer atmos, then out... so it slows the process down... to avoide that condesation? any tips? thanks tim!
  2. hey hey, if you like Quick Time stuff (I dont) you can check out the clip that this topic was on about on my web site ... uploaded recently. visit: http://www.lavproductions.com/projects.htm click on the picture which says doch (might have to double click) and wait few minutes as it is 10MB. The footage is of LIVE edit, and it is obviously crap BNC signal not the actual Beta SX that we shot with (that is yet to be edited). Cheers,
  3. Hey guys, been flat out working on my indi feature film http://www.translationthemovie.com, from shooting that preview to making that web site, so much so that I haven't used my 16mm stuff in almot a year. Now, there is this festival I awlays wanted to do a short for, and its on now... so I thouht why not? I got a great story... Here is the prob. Somewhat a year ago (just under) I shot 50" of one 500T roll and left it Unexposed in the mag. We are talking about 16mm BL mag here, taped up with a ton of gaff. Its sitting at the bottom of the fridge, fruit & vege basket, at the even 13degrees (i think). With it is ANOTHER Mag (I know this is insane) with 310" of 500T. I also got 400" of 'uneven' 250D, which was dismissed by a production house and given to me. I figure 'uneven' means it was shaken a bit in transport (I re-call it was send to Oz from Canada and quite few rolls they dissmises as 'uneven'). Thats what I got. Oh and I got a video camera too... but like I said, I'd rather shoot this short on film. What do you think? Is this film going to be OK? I know I should be able to keep it in the fridge for a year if in a CAN (like the 250D) but what about the stuff that I (an idiot) left in the MAG? What effect could come from it? MAGs are nice and dry... no condesation on them at all (just checked). well, hit me back with any thoughts... PS. the short is set in the backyard, same as the scene from my 35mm feature preview - on the Translation site.... same yard, same table...
  4. You are most right there...chances are he was using that as his own directors viewfinder... or similar?But then again, the film did stand out like a sore thumb when i saw it at the cinemas... Still, video? I really doubt it... I'd love for someone that has seen this film in the cinema to give their 2cents, since that YouTube is pathetic to be able to tell anything... and i think they mixed mediums in the film, so the clip in YouTube is only couple of minutes long - whilst the short is 20min... Thanks Christophe!
  5. found this link just now, the official web site: http://www.alltheinvisiblechildrenmovie.com/index2.pl maybe that still ought to put an end to this discussion.... dam; For those who live in Brisbane Australia, the film is screening at teh Palace Centro Cinema on 18th of November, Saturday at 1:45PM.... I am not sure what is going on with the ration there... could it be that who ever uploaded the file did some cropping themselves? thanks guys!
  6. some nice shots dude! just one thing... should you name your home page? at the mo its "untitled"...
  7. Hey Roberto, the file on YouTube is really low quality, you are right, but I am hinting towards 16mm or even 8mm. I watched it in a cinema, and it stood out like a sore thumb against other shorts that were obviously on 35mm... the grain was huge and at moments it appeared to look like video. I know its not though, since the 'feature' was produced by a company that I am sure would not allow it - I mean, mixing the gauges like that... but who knows? Since I am a huge FAN of Kusturica and his work, I am very well aware of his recent obsession with super 8mm (he shot his last doco on it - his band on tour) so my thoughts went to that straight away... I somehow doubt he would be allowed to work with super 8mm and mix it with other 6 shorts on 35mm... maybe he shot 16mm? maybe he shot 35mm and 16mm, mixing? that last one sounds like the most feasable...
  8. Hey guys, just thought i throw this out there... since its been bugging me a bit. If you have seen this film "All the Invisible Children", then you know its 7 shorts by worlds great directors.... now, its obvious they'd be shot on 35mm but Blue Gypsy (3rd story) - directed by Emir Kusturica was different... anyone know what it was done on? Cant find much on it, but here is an insert from that particular short on YouTube...
  9. hey guys, just a quick updated on the project. we shot on beta sx (x3) and did that for two nights. we shot in camera as well as vision switched on the night, recording into dvcam. matt, from the forum came along and helped (vision switching). thanks matt! the lighting tech was great to work with. he really made it work for video, by showing me shows prior to the once we filmed and adjusting them per my notes. we had beta sx there for one night for tests as well, when we shot some steadicam stuff, just cause we could... again, thanks to all that put their 2cents in and thanks to matt who came around to lend us a hand. cheers, lav PS. stills are from still photographer. the video clip sampel should be on www.lavproductions.com soon. thanks
  10. Hey buddy, you have to put a picture onto a web site then press the little image (three) symbol that is in the chat settings, type in the web link and voila :) Otherwise, you can just link to the image on the web by putting in the link direct - as i did on couple of photos above, cause they were too huge to just open them up if you didnt want to view them... perhaps there is another way of attaching, straight from your computer, but that i dont know... Hope my PULNIX camera explanation helped. If you want i can try and take a photo of the pulnix attached to my BL one of these days? Cheers,

  12. WHOLY CRAP, A SUPER 16 BL! By ARRI!? Wow... i never heard of that... i own one and looked to many places for conversion, best was to be Aranda Group in Melbourne Australia but never mind that... You asked about the video tap. Here is what i did thank to help from Don Brown from England. We took a BW Pulnix CCD camera TM-6EX (you can find on eBay), which runs on 12v and then we machined the plastic tube (you can use aluminium if you wish) to fit it onto the viewfinder. Machining wasnt really hard if you got all the right tools. I did it at Panavision office... techs there are always helpful!! http://www.translationthemovie.com/pics/Pu...206EX%20001.jpg http://www.translationthemovie.com/pics/Pu...206EX%20002.jpg Long story short the tube that connects the Pulnix camera to the viewfinder is a perfect fit. It is about 57mm long, and this is vital to get right due to FOCUS on the lens, as i am using COSMICAR/PENTAX 16mm TV LENS (you chould pick that up on eBay easy too). All up this is very economical way of doing it. I can see the whole of my ground glass, the TV LINES and everything. The TUBE fits snug, making it a firm fit, so it wont Fall of if shaken. Since it is made to fit on standard ARRI eyepieces, I once even used it on an ARRI 3 eyepiece when we needed a quick video tap on the day no one felt like driving to Panavasion for their Video Tap :) oh and check this crazy guy out! you got to love it! :D
  13. Hey Thanasis, did you convert the camera yourself or through someone? Care to elaborate on how you made your Arri BL 16 a SUPER 16 unit? I know Aranda Group in Melbourne do it, but i have never actually seen one convereted. Being that I own one, i am quite curious. Cheers,
  14. Dam good deal! Even with $600USD for postage it was a very attractive offer as it was coming from someone who took care of it and treated it right! I have no idea when this oppertunity might come around again.... till then, its back to the rental house for me (which has its moments too i must admit). PS. I was actually going to bid last night before i crashed to bed, with about 6hrs to go... there wasnt yet the response by you Tim and i wasnt sure if you wanted to send it to AU or not as in your eBay description it wasnt suggesting you were interested in that... Consider yourself lucky Chris... :) i would have outbid that price; well done tim and chris cheers
  15. Hey Tim, im interested in this camera, as you may remember me chasing an SR not that long ago (you gave me some advice on it). Anyways, are you not interested in selling overseas? Cheers
  16. id like to 2nd this. you will find the behind the scenes very interesting, escpecially if you are a steadicam op. i also think that Lost in La Mancha is fantastic, a great look into Terry's world. It doesnt feature much about cinematography but is very interesting to watch. last night i watched Nathalie on DVD - it had a great dir/actor section;

    Hey Tim, do you care to elaborate on your work? I am just asking out of pure interest mate. I am well aware of the Tobin crystal sync as i owned one with a BL previously. I also know that barneys can be great help in keeping the noise down but wouldnt mind hearing any other ideas you had about how to get around this... cheers bud

    Yap, I agree with that... I was on about my BL for so long that i missed the chance to mention Aatons. It would have surely turned my post into a novel :blink: (length wise). Back to original post though, I think $2K budget was in question, and i am not sure he will be able to really get the LTR54 for that... hence the crazy BL recommendations; Inspired by this post I took a BL to my class today. It was a beginners level Avid, and I thought it would interest them to see it. Whilst they were intrigued to hear how film cameras operated, they sure did give me the funny look when I pulled it out of its case - as if to say "what is that junk"?! Sure, these were just editing students (adult classes), but I predict that would be a reaction of some clients too... perhaps this is one of the draw backs Hans mentioned?
