  1. I found this while cleaning out my mom's garden shed after she died in 2010. I must have forgotten it at her house when I moved out. The shed was pretty old and rickety and leaked. Consequently, the magazine got mold damage and stunk pretty bad. I was going to trash it, but it had sentimental value to me. It was the oldest surviving photo mag I had bought since getting into photography in 1969. I recall buying it on one of the families regular Friday night food shopping trips. I think it was either a Ralph's or Von's near National and Overland in L.A. When the family went shopping, I would head for the magazine rack and read everything I could on photography. This mag impressed me with all the portfolios of the photographers of the day, so I bought it. But usually, I would just read magazines at newsstands and get books from the library to save my $ for film and chemicals. I had wrapped it in 4 layers of plastic sleeving and kept it that way until last week. (You could still smell the mold with 2 or 3 sleeves.) A couple weeks ago I started to give it some microwave radiation to prepare it for scanning. After 6 microwave treatments it still stunk, but it was doable to handle for scanning. I didn't need it perfect; I just wanted to scan and trash. No telling how much microwaving it would need to make it perfect. It tells you; you don't tell it when it is ready. But eventually the microwave wins if you got the patience. And you can't rush it, or you scorch the paper. Here you go... Popular Photography Annual 1972 D. D. Teoli Jr. A. C. : D. D. Teoli Jr. A. 3. From what I gather, Cintel keeps beating a dead horse. Cintel needs to make a copy of the Lasergraphics Archivist. They need to offer sprocket less transport and digital registration. They need to offer a warped film gate. They need to make it in China or Taiwan to keep costs low. (But I guess that option has drawn to a close with the recent developments in D.C.) It needs to be 6.5K and offer top shelf sharpness and dynamic range. It needs to sell for $29,995.00. It needs to come with comprehensive video instructions on DVD or a thumb drive. It needs to come with a standard film sample so the customer can achieve what the engineers show as best scan examples. Then they would have something. And if you want 3 image HDR, then add $12,500 to the price. Never go by sample scans a scanner company offers in the sales pitch. Always try to get sample scans of your films. An old gal down the street used to work as a secretary in a commodity trading broker, now she is retired. She said it was a common sales gimmick for the brokers to show clients a successful account or to only show them successful time periods in example accounts in order to get their biz. The customer never saw all the losing accounts. Same thing with the old miners selling their mine claims. But only after they had 'salted' the mine. <><><><> Example of tape damage on 16mm film can. 5. Spielberg screwed up. He should have put in some of his first films in the Fabelmans movie. No better place for it than in the special features. I'm thinking he may have embellished what he did as a kid as he had shown in the Fabelmans and could not backtrack. But just guessing. Or maybe he didn't think of it for its archival potential. Whatever the reason, I would have loved to have seen his early work as a kid. <><><><> Selection from Master Collection of US Paper Money / eBay Archive DDTJRAC Daniel D. 6. Maybe that is why the images look kind of sleepy for me. I like sharpness, generally speaking. If you don't want digital sharpness, then your images look fine for the film look.
  7. That is good you tried the 4K and had some choice in the matter. Well, you are right about your income in CA. In the Rustbelt you would be kind of rich! So, it is all relative. I'm the same way with gardens...no good. You have to be a slave to the garden. You have to have a certain personality for gardening. It is the same with making movies. The wrong personality is not good. That is why I like trees. Once established the fruit trees find their own water. (In temperate climates.) If a tree requires one to be a slave to it, then I don't like it. I was working with a road job back in the 70's in Sacramento. I took a walk after work and picked some figs from a tree overhanging in the alley. That is my memories of Sacramento. After that we worked in Gilroy, Monterey and Frisco. All beautiful country...even Frisco back then. Your sample images look a little sleepy. Make sure you clean your lens and get the best you can from the camera. Send in something when you shoot your project. Good luck!
  8. It would be interesting to see pixel shift compared to true K.
  9. 1) Crazy? Buy what you like. Especially if you can get a good deal on something. What is the other option? You can leave the $ behind for someone else to spend for you. 2) I can't answer your tech questions, but it looks like a nice setup. What was the purpose of buying that camera other than I wanted it? 3) If you can afford to live in Sacramento...you aren't poor. 4) Looks like you garden. Are you doing nature projects with the camera or people projects? I did a quick looksee on eBay and it said that camera is good for high-speed work. Is that right? 5) Do you have any fig or fruit trees planted in your garden?
  10. Birns & Sawyer Catalog 1980s D. D. Teoli Jr. A. C. : D. D. Teoli Jr. A. C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive I estimated it as 1980s, but am no expert. I mainly went by the fact it had no email contacts or internet info. It may have a date somewhere within, but a quick looksee didn't reveal it to me. What date do you put on it? ...on a sidenote. Always date your material. Write dates, names and locations on the rear of photos. Put the same info on digital files. Archivists spend a lot of time trying to date and make sense of things. <><><><> Film chapters on a 16mm reel. DDTJRAC Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. 14. Coin-sized nuclear 3V battery with 50-year lifespan enters mass production | TechSpot A Chinese battery manufacturer has developed a breakthrough, sparking a worldwide race for compact nuclear energy. The innovation is a small coin-sized battery powered by a radioactive nickel isotope that decays into stable copper. While the initial cell is relatively weak, it can easily be layered to provide more power for up to 50 years.
  15. Just an update on the stickers I mentioned...they don't work. At least when they get old, they don't work. I had bought some bulk stickers about 4 years ago, so I didn't need to keep buying them. After time they lose their stickiness. I contacted the manufacturer, and they confirmed it. They said they have to be used within 2 years or less or they lose adhesive power. Instead of starred stickers, I now use 1/2" fluorescent orange artists tape to distinguish special films. I wanted bright purple tape but could not find it. This works pretty good as long as I don't use any red tape in the archive. At one time I used red tape to mark VS films, so have to find and remove the red tape from them. I don't want anything close to this color to be in use to avoid confusion. Yellow is also a good color to use, but I have lots of yellow tape in use already.
  16. Are you talking about my archive or the other photos in this thread? My archive is an open content archive with a wide area of collection. The content is generally put up at the Internet Archive. It is non profit, it make no money at all. Here are some of the films... Internet Archive: Digital Library of Free & Borrowable Texts, Movies, Music & Wayback Machine I don't have much film up there because I still don't have a proper scanner. Once I do and can scan some of the film in the archive. I can put up maybe 10,000+ clips / shorts. I only have 758 as of now, even without a scanner, but some of it is VHS. Here is an old copy of the scope of the archive, but it is much larger now... Collection Scope Of The Daniel D.Teoli Jr. Archival Collection : D.D.Teoli Jr. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive I have very wide-ranging content, some of it is the best on the internet. Say, Aunt Jemima, here is only part of the collection. No time to scan the rest. But beside that it is all in decent res. That is what separates my archive from the rest. I offer decent res and even hi res for free if people write me, generally speaking. Internet Archive: Digital Library of Free & Borrowable Texts, Movies, Music & Wayback Machine I work in many hundreds, no probably over a thousand areas. I can't even count them all. Some areas are very obscure, but if I run across something...I have a folder for it. If you are talking about the other film collections here...I found the photos on the internet. I don't know much or anything about them.
  17. I generally store films horizonal, just because I have no specialized racks for vertical. I think vertical storage was more of a thing back in the day. When I first got into cine' film I wanted vertical racks because that was what I saw in some photos. In the mosh pit Selection from 'Whoop-Whoop' project 2015 D.D.Teoli Jr.
  18. I was setting up my home movies (found footage) on its own 6' t x 48" w x 18" d 6-shelf chrome wire shelf unit. I found it can easily hold 156 400-foot reels per shelf. That translates to 936 400-foot reels per shelf unit. If you are short on room, put another shelf unit on casters and park it in front of the rear one. Pull one out to get at the rear unit. That is what I'm doing. But if you do, be careful on the top shelf with avalanches if you move the shelf unit on carpet. On hard floors it rolls fine, on carpet it is hard to roll. Top shelf can be boxed to keep films from falling. The higher you go up the shelf unit, the more things wobble. I'm also burping all my cans as I organize them to de-gas. I'd love to get some of these yellow cans. I like yellow cans to hold split reels in. Makes it fast to find as I have very few yellow cans. When you need a split reel...you need it now!
  19. Thanks Mark! I've got an old tripod like that, just not that heavy duty. I could not figure out why it didn't have limits on the legs like modern tripods do and was always worried about it collapsing. I can see now I only have part of the setup and am missing the spider. I'm thinking that bag hanging there must have had lead or sand in it for stability. Unless it is a parts bag.
  20. 'Apollo 11' (2019) Featurette Clip D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive I was also impressed by their philosophy when it came to archival preservation. They had some super rare film, and they said after they scanned it, they never wanted to have to revisit it. That meant super high-res scans with a scanner that they made. Apollo 11 (2019) is a great film to get even if you don't care about the technical end of things. This is a clip from the short featurette. It was short to start out with, but I cut it down some for fair use discussion. They may have changed their name. I think this is the company...but not sure. I've had this sitting around for over a year for me to post here, but I never got round to cutting it up. Skyline Finishing | Home <><><><> Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. 21. I was contacted by a company getting rid of it and it for free. It is in Montebello, near L.A., CA. Here is what they wrote: "Acti process camera along with Carlson Gamma 3 unit and Lumax Pulsed Xeon lighting we’re interested in giving away if some is interested." If interested, write me direct and I will send you their contact info. w1000w@aol.com I'd put it at the Large Format Forum, but they banned me probably a decade+ ago...twice! PLEASE...if you don't know what a process camera is, don't waste my time or theirs. It was used in the graphic arts industry before there were scanners. 23. If you don't need to adjust the stool much, then a regular lever action stool is fine. I am always adjusting the stool for working on different shelf heights, so I sprung for the pricier 'ring adjusting' doctor's model. It is what they use in the medical field. It has an adjustment ring, so you don't have to hunt for the lever. Love it! If you are tall, get the taller version. This one goes down to 16.5 inches at the low point. As long as you are thinking ergonomics, get yourself a heavy duty electric adjusting worktable or three. I don't have one, but I think about it every few days when my back hurts and wish I did have one. It is on the 'to buy' list along with a workhouse and Lasergraphics Director scanner...as soon as the lotto hits! <><><><> Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D.
