  1. I pulled out the Retroscan to do some film scanning. A big problem for me is I have no room to work. If I flatbed scan I do that, if I want to use the large format sheet-fed scanner, I have to put away the flatbed scanner. Same deal with film scanning. I am going to have to do some copy stand work shortly, so the Retroscan will have to be put away. I used to do more work on the floor, but my back got wrecked for a month after a copy stand marathon on the floor. So I try to stick with table work now for long jobs. I got about (8) 16mm scans done over the last couple days. I have lots of old nudie-cuties that have warnings intertitles that say 'For Artists Only' but I never came across a film with it as its title. They also said it was for cinematographers in the intertitle, so I thought of you guys and gals. nsfw For Artists Only Nudists 1941 D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive It seems it was a common method to get around censorship for nudie films by putting the warning that only artists could view it. I got a couple of nice sound 'artists only' reels. I hope to spend some time with AEO Light in the upcoming months to learn how to extract sound from the film scans. If you need to convert a scanned optical sound track into sound, check it out . I never tried it but am keeping my fingers crossed.
  2. Wanted to Buy: Neumade 16mm Neutaper Tape Splicer
  3. $24K is a good price Sines. I think the Cintel 1 was $30K at B&H a while back. Isn't it sad the low level customer service you get from some of these companies? Some of them seem to work hard to not make the sale. I was talking with a RV dealer. He said he dropped a line of travel trailers he carried for 24 years. The kids took over the company and quality went to hell. He said they never contacted him when he left. They didn't even care they lost the account. When I first contacted Lasergraphics years ago to get some info, they never replied even after multiple contacts. They did get better at replies more recently. Maybe it is as you said Robert, more scanners around and they have to work a little harder to place them. In any case, there is not nearly enough competition with film scanners. When they were not so hungry Lasergraphics wanted $7,500 for set up and a short training. Don't know if it is the corrosive virus or just trying to lower the costs, but now they offer cheaper zoom training and setup. I contacted another scan company for a ultra large format Versascan flatbed scanner. SMA's Versascan - Google Search And also for some info from Kaiser Fototechnik. Nothing. No replies from either of them after numerous times. No one seems to give a S anymore. I'm pretty well set for things other than a hi-quality film scanner. So I am happy I don't have to deal with many companies other than buy basic staples for my work. It is sickening how incompetent some of these companies are. Now with inflation skyrocketing, even the stapes can be a problem. Printable 100GB M-discs went from $241 per 25 discs to $298.
  4. The sodbuster doll collection is pretty interesting. Some of the dolls graduate in size as the girls age until they get a real one that the mom is holding next to her girls. So you have the whole process from mini doll to big doll to baby right in front of you. Handling the dolls so much must pay off for the little girls. You know, practical training for holding the baby. The moms put in a tremendous amount of time and attention for a baby. I wouldn't like doing it for one day. I did a photo shoot of Walmart's girls toys. It is up at the Internet Archive. Lots of domestic stuff. While shooting it I saw one pair of moms was shopping for a grocery cart with fake food for their girls. Another was buying a toy stove and pots and pans. A third mom was looking at a toy vacuum cleaner. I was surprised the girls toys photo collection was so popular; it got almost a couple thousand looks at the I.A.. I was in Walmart, had to wait for a prescription and bored, so shot it. I don't like to waste time, so figured it would be good project to archive.
  5. Bryn Mawr Mayday 1942 D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive The girls' schools were big on Mayday / May Day celebrations back in the day. Now it is all but forgotten.
  6. Don't know. I was interested in a Cintel, but was told they do poorly with warped film, so lost interest. Some scanner makers will give you a sample scan. See if Cintel will do that. I suggest you check out Lasergraphics Archivist. A lot cheaper if it will work for you. Archivist 8mm and 16mm Film Scanner (lasergraphics.com) They have financing. What is wrong with Kinograph? They are a group of nerdy brainiacs that like to build their own scanners. Some people do. I talked with a guy on eBay that built a 4K scanner. He does commercial scans. (I'm no brainiac, so I have to buy and not build.) The scanning is the sickening part of dealing with lots of cine' film. (unless you are rich.) How much film do you need scanned? I got upwards of a million feet that needs scanning. At .30 a foot that is $300K. Some of the films I have in my Archive, the commercial scanning companies wont scan, so I still need to scan my own, even if I had the $300K. Good luck figuring it all out.
  7. Sound like an interesting project. Some lenses produce poor results wide open and once stopped down they are OK. I've only tested still camera lenses at various apertures mainly because I wanted to know what lenses will work for wide open shots in low light. I didn't try different lighting as I work with available light.
  8. OK, I have done some tests with RAW / JPEG to prove my point. Now, the difference is not that big, but it is noticeable and material. As I've said before. The RAW file (without post processing) does not look as good as the in-camera JPEG file and the test proves that. Here are the test files...you have to download the 2 files to see the difference. In Camera JPEG D. D. Teoli Jr. : D.D.Teoli Jr. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive Full res TIFF files from the RAW files looked exactly the same as the JPEG from RAW.
  9. I've been working on this project for ages. Just too much to deal with. The L.O.C. is a pain in the ass....my internet is very slow in the Rustbelt and just lots of material even when I finanly do get it all downloaded from the L.O.C. Here are a few of the collections. Maybe I have near 100 categories comprising of a few thousand photos. Just started with post processing a few days ago. But it is only half-ass post work. I can't spend too much time on it. I need to wrap up the sodbusters and get going by mid May scanning a 16mm film I have called The Initiation from the 1920's. Internet Archive Search: prairie teoli If you take a peak at Sodbusters in Transition at the link, that gives you a good overview of the material and pretty good post work. I spent more time on it. I only had 130 photos to post. Now have a couple thousand.
  10. That is interesting material. Nice quality too. Lots of the scans and PDF's I come across are garbage. It is refreshing to see hi quality archival material. You need to put your collection on the Internet Archive. As long as you don't put too much porn or anti-democratic politics up there you should be safe for as long as the electric is on. I can't say how much porn will kill your account. I put up a VHS trailer collection of a few dozen trailers from the 1980's and a collection of about 25 rare uncensored Japanese porn trailers and boom, they pulled the plug on me and no recourse to reinstate my account. I lost about 130,000+ uploads in an instant with no warning. My account was only restored when I complained to their blogging person. He personally reinstated all of my material otherwise nothing would have been done. Really sad how much prejudice there is in the world. Good luck with your archival work.
  11. More of the harmonica virtuosity of Borrah. Borrah Minevitch One In A Million : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive It is said Borrah died in Paris from a broken neck after being thrown down the stairs when he he got into a fight with the man caught having sex with his 2nd wife.
  12. Edit time ran out... Every gallon you drink of that water shown above puts all that filth into your body. Yet all the water looks the same...perfectly clear! I first got interested in water 12 years ago. I would drink bottled water and get heartburn from it. I started to distill water. I was amazed at what was in it. And things developed from there.
  13. I'd like to get some of that Australian water to test. It is fascinating to see what is in it. Hell, I like water from anyplace on the planet. If any of you travel a lot, carry 4 empty liter bottles with you and bring home a gallon of water to distill. You can make a study on foreign water. Or ship it to me, I will pay shipping and I will test it. (US only...can't afford shipping if outside of the country.) The only foreign water I've tested is from Canada. It was called 'Rethink Water' and sold in a Tetra Pak and labeled 'From a Community Water System' as the source. (That is code for tap water.) Photos of the test results are at the end of the bottled water tests. It is very filthy for bottled water. One of the dirtiest I've tested. nsfw...ish https://danielteolijr.wordpress.com/2016/01/18/6035/ I bought (4) 1-liter bottles of the Canadian water in a health food store in MN. It was on sale. I only paid $4 a gallon for it instead of $8. So, who could resist! You have to test bottled water as well as tap water. Some of the bottled water is not what they purport it to be. If you see the bottled water test photos you can see the difference between bottles labeled 'drinking water' vs. 'purified water.' Words make a big difference. There is nothing wrong with processed tap water. Tap water processed through reverse osmosis is very clean. Almost like distilled water. But 'filtered' and 'charcoal filtered' tap water with no additional processing has been very dirty in my experience. I also cover the water vending machines at that link. Generally they do a pretty good job cleaning up the water. I'm still having trouble with the Internet archive. lots of trouble. Here is the photo from the first post that wont show up.
  14. For 35mm, 6x6, 6x7 and 4x5 film scans, it is TIFF for me. They need all the help they can get. Although a new trend is to shoot the negs or chromes on a lightbox with a digital camera. I have not compared the results.
  15. As new cameras come out, that is a common problem with older software. The old software wont work with new RAW files. I only have Lightroom 5. It opens older Sony RAW but not newer Sony RAW. So I convert the RAW to DNG. Works good for me. Here is a photo with Sony RAW converted to DNG converted to JPEG. Fashion shoot on Wall Street – Daniel D. Teoli Jr. (wordpress.com) You can get the DNG converter free from Adobe.
  16. Dunno. Sometimes I've found things on JPEG 2000 and can't open it. I don't know what it is. Here it is. JPEG 2000 - Wikipedia Around that time I was still into film and missed all the hoopla.
  17. I used to scan flatbed to TIFF. Same with movie film. Now generally use JPEG. But only due to size. If I had an unlimited budget, I'd go with TIFF.
  18. Sure, compression is a big deal. But it is commonly thrown out that every time you save a JPEG you lose info. The 31 generation test shows how much data is lost with multi generation JPEG work. I will do more tests on the RAW / JPEG debate when I get some time.
  19. Very good. Not the usual garbage scans people usually offer. You can probably get by with 300 dpi. But 600 dpi is better.

  21. Borrah Minevitch And His Harmonica School : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive What caused it? Is this related to Deinterlacing? (I know next to nothing about it.) The original DVD was processed through 3 different software programs. But I've used the same 3 programs before and no artifacts like this.
  22. Do you use your name on all media online? I mean right in the description of the file. Lots of people don't do that. Download your files and see what name is on them. Also a middle initial helps distinguish you from others online. Here is an old post I wrote about the importance of naming your digital files. It is NSFW and contains strong content. So if you are easily offended don't view it. And if you are moderately easy to offend...don't view it. (Not that I care if you are offended, but I don't want to cause a big ruckus.) https://danielteolijr.wordpress.com/2015/05/09/the-importance-of-naming-your-digital-files/ In the post I discuss the importance of naming files and about how you can become mixed up with other people online in Goggle searches. I have my name on many hundred of thousand of files online. That is one of the reasons I go by D.D.Teoli Jr. for a lot of the content. I get sick of writing my full name out all the time. So like it short and sweet. A short name also gives me more room for the description. Sometimes long names / descriptions cause problems.
  23. Using a middle initial sometimes helps keep people separate. I found out early if I made comments on other people's blogs / websites their images show up in my image searches. So I cut out the practice years ago. Then as time went on I didn't care and now comment as I like.
