  1. ...my point is that I saw both leaving the footage untouched and doing heavy grades, no discernible difference from the KiPro and the internal AVC-INTRA100 codec in the HPX2700, so i sold the kipro. the 10bit codec inside the varicam is every bit as good as prores to my eye and given i still cut in final cut 7, final cut ingests the footage from the P2 card as a Prores 422 file.
  2. No, no difference. Graded the same. It’s not terrible but you just shouldn’t stack log luts onto the material.
  3. Funny, because I just sold off my AJA KiPro Mini that i'd had since 2014. I have an AJA KonaLHe card in my mac pro and was doing comparisons between the AVC Intra and native pro res out the HD SDI and there is no difference at all. I hate the external recorder route anyway.

  5. Breaks my heart to hear he's gone. Aaton is one of my all time favorite companies. the 35-III i think was one of the best 35mm cameras ever made.
  6. Yeah, i remember being able to turn off the matrix in the panavision 900 I had. There are 3 matrix tables in the varicam and from looking at the menu, you can set them to off. So it begs the question. if color matrix is off and im shooting film rec.. what "space" is the camera recording? still within rec709? seems like film rec sits in its own grey area.
  7. I know this is probably a needle in a haystack question, but, are there any other Cinematographers on here who are from Naperville, Illinois? I'm always interested in meeting people who share the same hometown as me.. i'm finding more and more people in the film industry from Naperville.. just seeing if any are cameramen/women. :)
  8. Thank you so much for the response. I didnt realize DVCPRO HD and AVC-Intra were MPEG files? That doesnt sound right.. I guess i should clarify that I'm shooting on the AJ-HPX2700 Varicam.. not the tape varicams or the current 35 models. So in terms of LUTs to bring film rec into an area to grade correctly, which do you prefer? I've noticed placing the "Smooth Step" node in Apple Color does help tremendously. I know Panasonic had LUTs back in the day for the film rec gammas but i doubt those are anywhere to be found in 2019. Are the ARRI Preview LUTs still available?
  9. I've been working with varicams for years but never gotten a clear answer to this. Does Film_Rec gamma in the varicams lie in a different color space than Rec709 or is it a unique version of Rec709 that allows more latitude? I ask because I want to know how I should treat it when I grade.. do I use base LOG Luts or Rec709 Luts? What steps allow me to maintain the extra bits of information? I've done my share of experimenting and its a mixed bag. Rec709 doesnt seem powerful enough yet LOG seems a tad too strong so i always have to dial it down a tad (the lut intensity that is). As for AVC-Intra 100.. the codec seems to really break apart with heaving grading.. I've never run into this issue with 10bit 4:2:2 material.

How much would you charge for something like that?
  14. I've been doing a lot of testing and I cant for the life of me get a "sweet spot" in the detail 1 menu to where im not over compromising the imager but im getting the most out of my lens. Detail OFF as recommended by Panavision looks a tad too soft. David Mullen I know you've spoken of this when you worked on The Quiet and Jackpot.. if anyone can help me i would be very grateful.

  16. I need to find someone that can make a 11pin JST male to 10pin LEMO Male for the control panel for my HD900. I really don't want to have to resort to putting the stock front face on my camera as I find it flimsy and weak compared to the metal PV front plate. Any help would be most appreciated.
  17. is it possible to get the menu data from the F900/3 to output through the Miranda DVC800 back to an HD SDI monitor? I'm having the hardest time trying to figure this out.
  18. Thats the newer HDCA's that do MPEG.. the 901 is almost 20 years old and only does XLR audio and HD SDI. They are not worth anywhere near $300.. the newer ones, yes i agree
  19. I dont think it is for it's age. I had one this time last year and paid $175 for it.. I returned it because the fuse blew in it and it would not turn on.

  22. Seeing if any of you had any Gamma, operator, scene files from the F900/3 camera you'd be willing to share? I have the digital praxis and Kodak curves already.. seeing if anyone ever made any custom ones themselves in CVP editor, or any unique full scene files? Thanks.
  23. I know this is going to be a huge longshot but does anyone by chance have the showreel Panavision put together for the HD900F in the early 21st century? Also, i know Panavision had a "Digital Imaging" shirt for awhile with the HD900F on it.. looking for one for myself. Basically any promotional material you might have for the HD900 I would love to see it purely for nostalgic reasons. Thanks :)
