  1. For the interrogation scenes...(based on the new AC mag issue) they shot uncorrected Ektachrome 100D 5285, cross-processed it AND did a bleach bypass. Lee uses cross-processing in many of his movies, and gets pretty good results!
  2. I had my interview last week thursday and it went pretty well...i dont know what to expect but it wasnt bad at all...they mostly talked about the program, and asked about my favorite books, movies and cinematographers. He asked about why I applied to the program and about my financial plan. Then he randomly asked if I knew and worked with a particular directing applicant from the same school that I go to...(i dont know why though) Overall I thought it went pretty well, they said that applicaqnts that get chosen will get a call on the 15th of April, so its gonna be nerve-racking but ive got my fingers crossed how did everyone else's interviews go?
  3. Here's a still from a recent picture that I shot on video with a net during a night exterior...the "net" was a cheap black women's stocking that I bought from Hecht's...I know its not S16 like you're asking (im shooting 16 next month and I'm using the stocking for a few shots on that as well), but I know video (the DVX100) has less depth of field than S16 so I'm guessing if it shooting through a net can work with video, it can work on that format as well. The effect is very noticeable but you cant really see the pattern of the actual net (ive seen this scene projected as well and still saw no pattern). I used it to: 1. soften the video image...and 2. for the interesting light flares to make the lights more aggressive. Even though i was cautious about using the stocking...I found that if i kept away from lights flaring directly into the camera, kept my aperture wide open, and kept my focal length long, it was ok. But maybe you would think that this effect is too harsh I don't know. Hope this helps in some way and makes u more confident about the net
  4. Congrats to everyone!!! I'm really glad to hear that all of you got calls! and thanks jayson for the words of advice. Good Luck in the interviews and i hope we all do well........and...hopefully i'll be able to meet all of you soon!! ;)
  5. Well my cold world has suddenly gotten warmer...i got a call from the admissions office for an interview next thursday...its supposedly the last day for east coast interviews...so i have to cut my spring break short, but who cares, its the AFI!!! But the admissions told me they were running behind on application reviews so look out for those calls everyone! GOOD LUCK!!! can someone whos been through an interview give us some tips! i know people from last year posted that they ask about for you to tell them about urself...then ask about ur reasons for wanting to attend the conservatory and about favorite movies and DP's...is there anyone else that had a different interview experience?
  6. u should visit...i met the admissions manager jj jackman twice and he seems real cool... but ive just gotten a financial aid letter too...has anyone here gotten an interview callback yet? it seems wierd...my friends that applied for directing and writing got calls but i haven't heard one cinematography applicant get a call back yet...and the interviews are next week!!!
  7. Two of my friends got calls already for interviews here on the East Coast...I haven't gotten a call yet (still have my fingers crossed). I don't know if theyre going in a particular order like alphabetically and/or by discipline. My two friends applied for screenwriting and directing. And the east-coast interviews are between March 10th-16th here in Maryland. Good Luck to Everyone!!!!!
  8. One cinematographer you should look into is Boris Kaufmann and his extraordinary work with director Elia Kazan, especially the stunning On The Waterfront. Also his work on Sidney Lumet's 12 Angry Men was pretty good as well!
  9. thanks for posting the stills haspel! I like em...especially the first one and the flashlight close-up. I'm also shooting an upcoming film on 7279 and the BL. But the producers can only afford the 10 to 1 Angeneuix zoom...even though i pushed for Zeiss. But I've never shot on 7279 and I'm planning on doing some underexposure in a fairly high-contrast interior. I wanted some advice (not to take much attention away from your original post) on shooting this stock. The ninth still...the one before the cigarette CU...the key on her face seems to be significantly underexposed...i wanted to know how many stops that light was underexposed and any other interesting lighting/exposure specs on the other stills... sorry if this was a long post but I'm really curious! congrats again!
  10. i'm probably the only person that doesn't know this already... i've only seen pictures of the camera, and I wanted to know: That appendage at the top that resembles a film camera's displacement magazine, is that the camera's hard drive? If not, what is it?
  11. nice shot! I like it...but i agree with david mullen. it would improve the frame if you lost the plant...it crowds the image just a tad and is placed awkwardly...the person sitting in that chair for a nice cup of morning coffee seems like he wouldn't have a very good time with the plant all up on him like that...but other than that i like it :)...nice warmth and i also love the hot rim! Did you diffuse on camera in any way...if so what'd you use?
  12. I've been interested in getting If Its Purple, Somebody's Gonna Die. Can you all tell me what you thought of that book: was it informative, engaging, and did it provide many examples? Did it go into detail about color in regards to optical and special effects technique or was it completely just color theory and philosophy. Just wanna here some opinions...
  13. I live in Silver Spring like Mr. Durham and go to school in DC...and I can tell you...NO WORK...maybe in Baltimore but not in the District area...you might be able to find some freelance videography work as well as maybe some graphic/web design work. I suggest to get yourself a 3CCD Mini-DV camera and an editing system (but u might not have the money for that yet i don't know)...because you might be able to get some event-shooting jobs (like weddings) and also try to use your computer skills because people are always looking to design webpages and all. But your most marketable skill right now seems to be the whole six languages thing...that's great--People are always looking for translators right? And with your 16mm package...u might wanna look into museum work...i once met this guy that said he was working on documenting the museums and monuments for the government...but i don't know any specific info on that
  14. **"The grain levels between these two stocks are actually much closer than you might think." Very True. I shot 7217 and 7218 and the grain structure seemed practically the same to me...save yourself the headache and go with the '18
  15. I've only seen the trailer but it really does look as interesting as you say...seems very engaging as soon as it comes out in D.C. I'm gonna check it out! Congratulations and I hope that this will lead to even more satisying projects in the future!
  16. I'm looking forward to seeing the Genesis at work on the big screen as well! And I also hope it doesn't disappoint... But I think you're overlooking COLLATERAL, elvworks, in which the digital cinematography was great and definitely supported the story! But i agree, the last Star Wars episodes didn't live up to my expectations.
  17. Yes! Very good observation Wendell! I also think that the ASC should split the nominations that way and also nominate videos and commercials along with their TV nominees. And yes, I forgot to congratulate all the nominees in my original post!
  18. The ASC just announced their nominations for the best feature work for 2005! : BATMAN BEGINS (Wally Pfister; 35mm anamorphic) BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (Rodrigo Prieto; 35mm) GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK (Robert Elswit; Super-35mm) KING KONG (Andrew Lesnie; Super-35mm) MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA (Dion Beebe; 35mm anamorphic) I'm curious to know what everyone thinks about the nominees! *Personally I find Batman Begins a pleasant surprise, but King Kong...cool work but i didn't see it cracking the top 5 Where's 2046, The New World, Jarhead, The Constant Gardener, March of teh Penguins and/or Capote?:(
  19. I think you can also see the very noticable effects of the classic softs in War Of The Worlds during the Marine/alien battle scene on the hill when the civilians are running up the hill...the glow is very noticable on the flashlights...
  20. hey ?uick ?uestion...: are there any websites (kind of in the vein of IMDB) that provides info of the crew list, technical specs and/or misc. info for commercials and/or music videos? I'm interested... Thank you
  21. I don't have any footage online to show you but i have a few stills hope they help...shot with a 100 in 24P advanced mode
  22. Thank you everyone for their thoughts and suggestions, it's made me more confident with shooting this old stock!!! That's why I love this site!!!
  23. So would the 1-stop overexposure not be a problem after I process normal...or would it be TOO overexposed and I would HAVE to correct it in telecine?
