  1. I've done 200 ft + through a forest where the track at one point was touching ground and 3' in the air at other point (used LumaBeams). Two dollies on the rails too with Ops and focus pullers riding.

  3. We here in Toronto prefer a combination. MSE stand with Avenger gobo heads and arms. Avenger heads have less parts still have an amazing grip. Their stands are a different story - too heavy and their posi locks are wonky. American never caught on here. Love to try Modern's stands.
  4. I have also the same thing but having been experiencing a "wardrobe malfunction" with it. Water will pool on the top and eventually soak through. I've been waxing and rewaxing the hat with wax that I bought from the guy who sold me the hat, but ever since it got left by the heater in the truck, it's never been the same... Love the hat otherwise and use it for the sun as well David
  5. Don't forget the third hole for the rig arm... oh yeah, and the Gortex goes on the rig, right? (or do you prefer cling / saran wrap?)
  6. I'll defer to my Vancouver brothers and sisters as we get less overall rainfall here in Toronto
  7. Okay, I didn't really know where to post this and I'm generally drawn here (mods - please move to appropriate forum if needed). I'm wondering what people use for rain wear. It's time to retire my Viking WetSkin suit (10+ years) and am looking for suggestions for a replacement. I personally don't mind "non-breathablity" as I feel that breathable materials like Gortex have a give, or a saturation point where after a certain about of use (ie: minutes under the rain towers) they actually start to take on water like a sponge rather than repel it. I'm also looking for an all season suit something to take on "April showers", sun showers and the wet snow of Jan. As a side line, I wear either an oilskin baseball cap, or more often an aussie cowboy hat that's been wax treated. On my feet I've been loving my Neos Overshoes for the last year. Anyone?
  8. Tennis balls (cut of course) on stand legs work when there's no carpets. Also, have the locations dept cut carpet runners into 10"x10" squares so you're not fighting with excess carpet against walls, etc Dave
  9. Sounds great!! Love to see some photos! Anyone have a Fraser Dolly? Dave
  10. My buddy makes this track: www.gitrack.com It's aluminum and can deal with the weight.
  11. Key Grip Best Boy Grip Dolly Grip Grip The Best Boy Grip is the second in command and organizer of gear and crew. Dave
  12. I may have to purchase an overkeeper / slider / linear bed in the New Year and am trying to find sources of such items. I know Modern Studio Equipment has one model. Walter Klassen (of the SteadiCam vest) makes the Side Step (horribly over prices, but beautifully made!) and have come across a couple from Vancouver (Young FX?). I'm looking for websites (with specs and photos), contact phone numbers and prices. Thanks! Dave
  13. As far as I know, Scotty has retired. Any idea which union the production will sign with? Options are IATSE 873 & Nabet 700. Or are you going non - union?
  14. How long of a run do you have? One method I would use is I-Beams (or "stringers" from the local Scaffold rental place). I use the ones with the embedded 2x2 wood on top (to screw your track down to). If you have a small to med length run, it's great to use 24' I-Beams and to be able to level 3 pieces of rail as if it was one and only have to support it in three places across the length - saving on cribbing. Dave
  15. "I beleive I can help with this problem. My team and I have developed a wheel that does not flat spot and rolls extreamly smooth and quiet. The formulation can be made in a wide range of diameters and widths to fit any dolly system. Anyone wishing to learn more may e-mail me." Please share! Dave
  16. You can also try LIFT in Toronto: http://www.lift.on.ca/mt/
  17. Greg; Two words; Good Luck!. No, seriously. The industry in Toronto is going to get harder and harder to "get into" over the next while. The shockwaves from the last boom are settling and people are finding that there isn't enough work to go around anymore (too many people jumped on) Back to your original question. A couple different avenues. One of the most commonly taken paths is working as a PA on commercials (non-union) then being "picked out" by a key grip for the odd daily here and there. Once you get enough days then you can approach the unions (Nabet 700 or IATSE 873) and apply to their permitee lists. Me? I started in the non-union world, when there was a big chunk of work there, got accepted into NABET, keyed there for 12 years or so, then jumped ship and am pushing dolly in IATSE. I've seen both sides of the fence and survived the boom & bust cycles. To be honest, with the dollar the way it's going, and the lack of indigenous production (save all the HGTV reality shows) I don't see the industry lasting too much longer here. Now that I've rained on your parade - any questions? Dave

Very Heavy to deal with).
  19. Matt; The company is EGRIPMENT (www.egripment.com). They haven't made it in years and I can't remember the name (Dino?). Dave

    416

That's odd. From what I've read from Marc S-M (of Arri) there won't be a high speed version of the 416 - they'll continue building the SR3A-HS for that. As asked earlier, no, Arri doesn't see the demand for a 800ft mag. And the antenna is for the built in wireless focus / zoom receiver on the 416 PLUS model. Dave - No where near NAB - but in the 416 area code
  21. Losmandy (I have no affiliation - just saw their ad): http://www.porta-jib.com/porta-glide.htm I own a set of Jim Charbonneau's "Speed Wheels" and have been fighting the same problem. It's the trade off you have to make. You want a softer wheel to absorb the track joints but a harder wheel to be able to support the weight (generally a Hybrid or Fisher 10 & ops). I just have to roll out the wheels before each take right up till they call 'action' (the focus pullers hate it). I have yet to come across a wheel density that makes everyone happy. Dave
  22. AeroCrane LA can be found at: http://www.aerocranerentals.com AeroCrane Netherlands (and Manufacturer) can be found at: http://www.aerocrane.nl Just on a side note - I find it frustrating when people ask for an "aerocrane" when in acutal fact they want AeroCrane's Jib arm. Most people don't realize that AeroCrane makes several different makes of crane too. Just a pet peeve... I have no attachment with AeroCrane - just use their gear. Dave
  23. Does the mount have to be gyro'd? The Mega mount (Mega III or IV) aren't stabilized but do offer a third axis. The Libra Head and Stab C are stabilized, but have a VERY limited roll. The Wescam (now Pictorvision) XR has both (and weights less then the Stab C). If it's just a nodal point head (rotating on the centre of the lens) you want, then you could order a Weaver / Steadman with a third axis, or the Ronford F7 Mk whatever with a third axis. If you just need to mount on your current setup, then Panavision has their famous "PanaTate" and there is fench make that I think Clairmont may have (I know of one rental house here in Toronto that has one) and for the life of me I can't remember the name right now. If I'm getting close let me know and I can call around. Cine sst here used to rep it (and made a motor conversion too). Hope this helps David Erlichman - Dolly Grip P.S. I don't work for any of the above companies... I just have to use their stuff.
  24. "DARK WATERS"' Toronto focus puller was Johnny Colavecchia. Amazing guy. I've known him since his trainee days and have had the pleasure of working with him twice this year and am starting another project with him next week. A real pleasure, technically inclinded, and not thrown easily. His resume can be found here: http://www.iatse667.com/producers/430.pdf Dave Toronto, Ontario
