  1. Minimal Camera Crew for independent productions Not long ago, I wrapped an independent feature that was shot in Morocco with a DoP I had already worked for on two more movies. From the very first contact with the production company, it was quite clear that it was a low budget movie, therefore it was mandatory to squeeze the most out of every single euro in order to make the shooting possible according to the schedule, without the need to do extra hours and such. As usual, I advised the director of photography on the gear list, try to get everything I considered necessary and making a separate list of devices and accessories that could be considered dispensable, hoping that finally the production company would come to an agreement with the rental house. Since the prep time had been very short, there was a lot of information about the shooting I wasn’t aware of, and now that I came back I would like to share what I've learned from this experience. Speaking about gear and accessories, I realized that there are some of them that are wrongly considered “fancy”, while it’s precisely in low budget productions when they become more handy and/or essential. 2. Take the camera and Run - Film cameras Blog As happened to me quiet a few times lately (and I have the feeling it will keep on happening) I found myself in one of the shooting situation I dislike the most, which is when more or less suddenly As happened to me quite a few times lately (and I have the feeling it will keep on happening) I found myself in one of the shooting situation I dislike the most, which is when more or less suddenly the 1st AD tells me :”Put in that van everything you’re gonna need for the rest of the day, we’re moving to a new location which is an hour drive from here. Don’t forget anything, be fast and please… keep it simple!”. Of course, I’m not speaking about situation where this was in the callsheet, in that case it is pretty easy to be prepared. I’m speaking of those times when a sudden change comes up (rain on location, new shooting plan, talent’s agenda variations and an awful long etc.) and we need to improvise, which is from my point of view one of the most important skills of a good AC. I’m pretty sure that some of you came up quickly with an answer like :”Ask the DoP!” and even though it is logic, if life was so easy everybody could be a top notch assistant cameraman. Normally, when this kind of situations happens, there has been an important change in the order of the shots, so is pretty likely that the DoP has his hands full speaking with the gaffer and/or the best boy about the new situation, discussing with the director all kind of lighting issues etc. Of course, the camera crew also will need confirmation from him, but is going to be much more fast if we do all the thinking, and then we just ask for a confirmation of the equipment list. Plus, making sure there is everything is needed for the shooting camera wise is one of the duties of the first assistant. 5. Hey guys, I am very interested in entering the world of underwater camera work. I did the whole film school thing and have been working as a camera assistant in LA for 3 years now. I am SCUBA certified and I love the ocean, I actually grew up in Hawaii so I really feel more comfortable in the water than out of it! I have been trying to find a way into the underwater industry for a few months ever since I worked on a shoot that had its own underwater unit. So fascinating! I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on where to start? I am planning on going into Hydroflex this weekend to chat with some people there. I have also been contemplating selling my 7D and buying a 5D with an underwater housing...thoughts? Do 5D housings get rented very often? I figure a good way to get hired might be to own some equipment? I also don't have any marketable underwater footage of my own, and I would like to put a reel together to help gain exposure. Any help would be great. Thanks!

  8. Hello, I will be graduating film school in less than two months. I am, of course, an aspiring camera assistant. I am having a hard time deciding where to move after I graduate. The school I attend is located in Florida which has little to no film industry anymore. I have no choice but to move. Based on your experience or knowledge...where would be the best place for me to move to get starting jobs such as Camera PA/Trainee gigs? LA? Atlanta? I know that there is really no right or wrong place to be...I just need a little bit of guidance. Thanks. :)
  9. Hello Everyone, My name is Alex Mitchell and I am an aspiring camera-assistant hoping to hit the ground running after I graduate from my film school (FSU Film) in December. I've spent over 3,000 hours on set working both ATL and BTL jobs on professional and film school sets. I chose to specialize in camera-assisting because it combines my best qualities into one job: a deep passion and knowledge of cameras and lenses, appreciation for capturing beautiful moments (in focus!), and endurance. I read the blogs on this site and I love all the knowledge you all share, and I was hoping if you could share with me some of your knowledge. I plan on moving out to L.A around January 2014 after I graduate and start working as a freelance camera assistant. I already have some connections through my film school but I would like to work someplace where I can connect with other professionals too. I would like to land an internship/job working at Panavision or any other camera rental house. I know they don't just hand out those jobs, but I'm determined to get one. If you have any type of advice for someone like me please let me know. I have a couple of months before I move out there, so I am just gathering information that will help me down the road. My resume is on my website if you'd like to check it out and I'll attach it onto this thread too for your convenience. Thank you for you time and I look forward to your responses. alexmitchellfilm.wix.com/apictureisworth Film Resume.pdf

  11. I may be traveling from Los Angeles to cape town south Africa for a spot on Monday 3/4/13 and may be looking for a 2nd AC for myself. Details are still coming in but as of now it sounds like we'll be shooting 35mm out of panavision. Does anyone know of any good ACs in that area? Don't know if I'll be able to hire a loader too so I'll most likely be looking for a clapper/loader. Also, an AC with a cart would be very helpfull. If not, is there a way I can rent a camera cart out there? Thanks for the help Stephen Taylor-wehr
