  1. Hi, I'm a 2nd year AFI Cine fellow, and I'm shooting my thesis Nov 30th to Dec 4th. I'm looking for an experienced 1st AC. I'm not expecting someone with years of experience, but must have some experience as the film have some challenges. The overall film is pretty dark, and there will be lots of handheld movements in parts of the film. Ideally, I would need someone for the whole period, but more importantly Nov 30th and Dec 1st is more crucial. I'm also looking for a grip for the entire period + one day of pre-lighting on Tuesday Nov 29th (NoHo soundstage). We will be 1 day at the soundstage, 2 days at a car wash in Glendale (only exterior) and 2 days in Cieniga (mostly interior). It's 10h days + 1h lunch. And we will be shooting evening/night for 4 days and 1 day from around 9am - 8pm. Unfortunately this is not a paid job as it is a student film. Contact me if your are interested or have any questions. Instagram: dp_leobehrens email: lbehrens@afi.edu Text me: 213 588 5591 ______________________________________________________________ The film is a heist film. Two brothers are robbing a car wash. The main character is in a toxic (family) relationship with his older brother, and is trying to escape him at the end of the film. The older brother gets caught by the cops, while he gets away.
  2. I need to find jobs in production/ film in the Dallas area. preferably a PA job. only for a few months. any websites I can use?
  3. Hey everyone, I have a question I'm sure that gets brought up a lot, but I'd figure I'd ask anyway. How do you all go about finding your gigs and your work? More so, how do gigs/ producers find you? It seems in this industry when you ask someone these question, everyone wants to stay very secretive about it because they feel the need to protect where they're source is. So I wanted to post this here to see if any one would be willing to discuss this. Thanks in advance and happy filming!
  4. Hey guys, I haven’t been on here for a while. I’m looking for some advice. Sorry if this is long winded…It’s been in my head for a while. I’m a Scottish DP based in Hong Kong and I’m thinking about relocating back to the UK & trying to get into production work. A bit about me : I have an undergrad in Film from 20 years ago and about 10+ years experience in the camera side of production…everything from AC to Gaffer to DP but mainly on small productions - loadsa of Short films, Indie Music Vids & tons of corporates. (I’ve shot corporates & Indie stuff in about 12 different countries.) I haven’t shot very regularly for a few years after a back injury took me out & I ended up getting a very well paid job in another field. When I recovered I didn’t want to continue shooting corporate jobs but I have been teaching Cinematography at a Film School part time and that’s fired me up again. I’ve always wanted to work in the scripted TV/Film drama genre but there just aren’t many opportunities here in Honkers for non-locals and I feel like there are no options to progress – I really should have left 10 years ago. I’m single, getting on a bit - 40+, female with no strings attached…no debts etc... So my question : How would someone with my years of filming experience but no real 'industry' experience fair in the UK film production scene? I've lived outside the UK for about 17 years so I’m considering taking an MA in Cinematography partly to acclimatize myself back into the country & partly to network for industry contacts plus I do enjoy teaching film and Masters would allow me to teach college classes if things didn’t work out.... BUT I’m not sure if I should go this route? It’s quite a lot of money to put out…OR …would I be better keeping my money to support myself while I just try to network on my own to get contacts & production jobs. In terms of work I have no delusions of turning up & getting DP work and I would have no prob starting at the bottom of a cam dept or even a rental house, I just want to work in the camera dept with good crews but is it realistic for someone in my position and age to try to re-start a career that's been on & off for 2 decades & what route do I take? Thanks for any thoughts or advice...harsh, truthful or difficult...I'd like to hear peoples honest opinions so i can make an informed decision...
  5. Hello everyone, I am a 3rd year film student studying Cinematography. The dream is to one day be a DOP for Film and Documentary, however, first I want to work my way up through the ranks of the camera department. I have undergone a number of weeks of work experience as a shadow camera trainee on 2 British TV shows. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get work as a camera trainee in the UK? Or perhaps can offer me any work/work experience over summer as a trainee? Cheers! Josh Montoro
  6. Hello Guys, Getting into The Industry I am creative writing student and have a few questions and queries regarding the industry of film and cinema. I do not have the benefits of nepotism, so I am starting from the bottom. I have worked for three years at some top companies in London (Liberties & Claridge's inc). Those experiences have exposed me to the realities of corporate companies, job ladders and management. They have given me the guile and awareness of what happens with the high-status businesses and sharpened my outlook regarding Industries. The paid roles I am looking for (all entry positions) Art Department Assistant Film Administrator Assistant Concept Artist Assistant Storyboard Assistant Junior Producer Assistant Film development Assistant Screenwriting Internship DOP Apprentice / Internship Portfolio / Experience / Relatable Knowledge I am creating a short online portfolio with my screenplays as a prospectus for my work, portfolio for jobs. (6 Months available) Studying a Creative Writing and Media Degree Undergoing a Film Music Score course with Berklee University Online. I study creative writing degree and understand the enterprise of having an innovative presentation/portfolio/C. V/ Compliment letter for getting a job role however what are the additional requirements of my pitch I could do to gain a contract? How would I go on about contacting a company directly to express my interest in working with them? Is this a useful approach? As I am not in the industry as of yet, would I need to get involved in an entertainment recruitment agency or hire a consultant to advise and guide me through the pathways and pitfalls of the Film scene via networking and contacts? I do plan to make a short film and supply it with a printed leaflet which gives a brief snippet of the Cinema I aim to create, my skills, and showcase my relatable talents that could help their companies grow. How should I market this in regards to the job role I am keen? Would I then aim to promote it to as many consortiums as possible? My most pressing question is regarding the ‘other side’. I do not want to work for people that are the creative talents; I want to be the ‘creative content producer’, therefore is there a route in 2017 which would be monetary instead of a freelance Cinematographer, Screenwriter, Videographer? If so what is it? Moreover, what would be the best alternative, that would be an expressive job role which I can create in that pays As I am in England London, the industry is very minimal however it still exists, but I am sure there were many people in my predicament in their early days. If you have any advice on how to ‘break’ into the industry in the associated roles, I mentioned, please provide me with some information as it will go a long way to shaping my future and next career step. Many Thanks Michael okorodudu

  8. Hello I'm studying Creative Film at Cleveland College of Art & Design Your answers will be used inside the university and its marking system only and will not be published in any way Firstly thank you so much for your time! Here are the questions: 1. What was your first industry opportunity? 2. Do you think that establishing yourself in the industry is who you know or what you know? 3. What would be your first piece of advise for someone who wants to take up a similar role to your own roles? 4. Finally, do you personally feel that cinematography is developing to become more and more important in television? Thank you for your time and input
  9. Okay, guys and gals!! I have a few questions that hopefully the wealth of knowledge here can answer. First a disclaimer, (I actually like disclaimers for some weird reason): My goal is to lens commercials, films (short or long format), and the occasional music video. If given the opportunity, of course. I currently work for a production house that does very little in all those categories. So in the best interest of my personal goals I'd like to submit the following questions.: Is there a benefit to aligning oneself (as a cameraman/cinematographer/DP) to an ad agency? What are the challenges that arise when you build up a narrative reel, when trying to get into commercials and other types of work? Is it easy to get pigeon-holed as a “Insert Category” DP, or is that something that one unconsciously gravitates to? If most of your current work is primarily short form narrative; How do you branch out into other categories of work? There have been several examples of DPs rising through the camera department ranks, getting the nod for commercial work, narrative, etc., or gaining an opportunity for narrative work through documentary work; how often does that happen nowadays? Is there something that I may be missing as far as learning about how the political climate of our craft is going? Does that vary from region to region? If so, what is it like currently in Texas? (I live in Houston, where the bulk of the work is news and oil & gas.) Should I talk with a Union Rep. to figure out how I can better align myself with shooting productions in the aforementioned categories? There are only a handful of people in my state, that have any dealings with unions, and I'm wondering; Would it be better to move to another city, and start all over with the title “aspiring DP”? I'm sure I'll have a ton of other questions, but these are the most nagging to me!! Thank you in advance for your epic help!!!

  13. Hey guys! So I've been working as a freelance Editor for several years. I miss working on set and as the post market seems to be more and more saturated I want to expand my options for work and include camera as a skill set. And I don't mean video I mean big boy rigs like the Alexa and Scarlett and F55. I've been following The Black and The Blue for sometime. I've had a great deal of photographic experience from college and have been on set as many years as in post. So I feel I can pick up (even as a camera PA I don't need an ego here) in the camera department and become a real asset. My question is this: Where can I meet folks who can help me get an interview? I want to work up to at least a 2nd AC and I think my experience in post would give me an edge in Digital Production. So yeah... I'm super excited about starting in a new department and learning a ton more. Any Advice? Leads? -SM
