  2. Hey all - was looking to get some insight as to what other DPs like to test for when given the opportunity to test cameras and lenses for picture. Even as far as to what tools you might recommend using to help the testing process like a light meter, etc. For this purpose let's assume the test is for digital camera bodies. I'll soon have access to a RED V-Raptor 8K for testing and my personal Fuji X-T4. Two completely different camera bodies but for myself I really want to compare the dynamic range and how far I can push them in the post-room when comparing the two. I'd like to place them in high contrast lighting situations - anyone have any insight here as to what they like to do/use? Is there anything else you would test for? I'll also have access to a set of IronGlass lenses - rehoused vintage soviet lenses. Anything in particular you test for or even a high-level/general idea of your mindset going into a lens test? Testing for how images look like wide open versus closed down, flaring, etc. Any insight here would also be greatly appreciated. Links to other videos or tests would be welcomed too. Thank you all.

  4. Hi fellow cinematographers, I'm looking for the (somewhat hard to find) 26mm Kern Switar Preset lens in the final black version with multicoated glass. I need the optics to be in a good shape but body doesn't matter that much. I desperately need to complete my lens set. I'm looking for anyone that has this lens but I'd prefer to buy from someone in Europe/EU (that would be perfect!) or the UK. But I'm open to discussing importing it from US as well.   8. Hi, I've recently noticed a small blemish in the top left corner of the image when I use my Angenieux zoom lens (filming with my Arriflex 16mm camera). The blemish does not appear on the other lenses and has only very recently (on my last shoot in January) become apparent. Anybody know what it could be?
  9. Bolex Anamorphot Lens 16/32/1.5x This hard-to-find BOLEX MUELLER 16/32/1.5x Anamorphic lens with holder for H16 Bolex cameras is in nice condition...I don't think it was used very much. Cosmetically it looks great, with no “brassing” to the black parts. The glass is clean, the front element has a small scratch, maybe 1/4” long, off toward one side. The rear element has some very slight fogging around the edges Lens serial number is 768491 The leather case is in fair to good condition, with a bit of wear inside but looking nice outside. The parallax compensating viewfinder seems to function as it should, but could benefit from some cleaning. The chrome plated pin at the front mount has a bit of rust and chrome loss. This set includes the lens and mounting hardware, front lens cap, leather case, and viewfinder, as shown. Everything will be securely packaged, padded and double boxed for shipment. I will ship within the USA only. I do not claim to be an expert on photographic equipment. Although I have described this lens as accurately as I can, it is nonetheless a used item, and I must sell it As Is, with no returns. $1000.00. I can take PayPal, but I prefer Postal Money Order. Anywhere you look online, it is stated that Canon K35 lenses were used for Aliens, but I recently had a back and forth with someone in the "Anamorphic Shooters" facebook group that piqued my curiosity. I haven't seen any mention of this in the forums, so I'm interested in what info anyone might have aside from this seemingly sensible hearsay: (names removed) "Aliens was shot on Panavision lenses, most likely rehoused Zeiss HS optics. The K35s story is an internet myth, one that is repeated as gospel by most rehousing and hire companies. The K35s were used simply on the b-camera for cutaways." Me - "Really? I can’t find any source that says that, how do you know?" "A guy I know worked with Adrian Biddle on a commercial project before his death. K35s were not highly regarded lenses until 10 years ago... no one wanted them and there is no way 20th Century Fox would ever let an entire blockbuster with a budget of 18 million be shot on them. Adrian Biddle replaced veteran Dick Bush who was fired by James Cameron. Bush was a very old school DP and there's no way on earth he'd not used Panavison lenses. Aliens was Biddles first movie as a DP and he'd never have been able to send back a full Panavision lens set and replace them with K35s. They had a short schedule and since no one wanted the K35s Biddles was able to get them cheap and have them used on the B-camera for additional coverage. The internet and especially rental houses listings are full of half truths... and myths ... the reality is... a huge number of movies simply used Panavision glass. Panavision were rehousing lenses since the 1950s and still are... and in that time have used Bausch & Lomb, Nikon, Leica and especially Zeiss optics as the basis for their lenses. If you believe the internet: Hitchcocks, "The Birds" was shot on SuperBaltars... even though the movie came out in 1962 and the lenses were released in 1966/67. The Godfather was shot on SuperBaltars... even though a good portion of the lens was shot on Gordon Willis' custom made Panavision 40mm. American Hustle was shot on K35s... well half true, the original casings were so useless they were quickly replaced by Zeiss Superspeeds. Kubrick used K35 on Barry Lyndon... not true... he used an early Canon FD specially rehoused. Aliens being shot on the K35s is yet another one of those myths. In their original unrehoused form they were a pain and in fact 10 years ago a case of lenses would cost you about 5k. ...the K35s are very popular now... but never were at the time... even though they did win an Oscar. All but the 18 and 35mm are basically rehoused FDs (with some improvements to the coatings) which is why they cover a LF sensor. The truth about lens choices pre digital... often it was a lot less sexy and complicated than we think... it was what was there, what worked and what gave the sharpest image on 35mm film. Plus the most reliable mechanics... and that was part of the K35s downfall... and their uneven focus throws. you might find this piece worth a read. Gregory Irwin who worked on American Hustle also AC'd on Joker, Interstellar... his credits list is huge."

  18. Hi, everyone! Gonna be shooting a film with a look rooted in Jazz photography from the likes of William Claxton, Dennis Stock and others known for the marvelous images they created around that beautiful genre. Obviously, the film's aesthetic's going to borrow a hell of a lot from these great photographers... However, what I'm most interested in is the B&W film stocks that were around the time in which the most iconic artists were photographed: the 1950s. So, on the one hand, what I'm wondering is if there's anyone in the room with an idea about the the rolls of B&W film available at that time and their characteristics. But on the other hand, I'd like to know if anyone knows where can I find information on the way these photograpers worked, which is to say the lenses and equipment they used, the way they developed their film and created they final shot in the darkroom, etc. Also welcome is information on the film stocks used to shoot movies or documentaries around the 50s. My guess is even at that time Double-X was the real deal, but... You know. A guess is a guess.
