Alexander Boyd Share Posted November 7, 2020 (edited) Hi all, I'm trying to find a way to optically diffuse/diffract light so that the image is blurred towards its outer edges. Similar to what they did in Post Tenebras Lux, where I have read somewhere that they removed front elements of the lens. Would love to hear how you'd go about this. thanks, Alex Edited November 7, 2020 by Alexander Boyd
Stuart Brereton Share Posted November 7, 2020 Reversing the front element will give you a center spot that is in focus, and blurred edges. It's a lot like a Lensbaby effect, but not as controllable. The effect in your pictures looks different, as if they are shooting through a piece of glass with a hole cut in the center of it.
Alexander Boyd Author Share Posted November 7, 2020 Thanks for pointing this out, Stuart. You're right, the edges are not just blurred as in a lensbaby effect, but the light is kind of "broken up" and refracted. I'll do some tests with additional glass in front of the lens. Daniel Klockenkemper Share Posted November 7, 2020 I think the Vantage spot diopters will do exactly what you want: https://www.vantagefilm.com/en/products/optical-tools/vantage-diopters I got a similar effect with a homemade version:
