Timothy David Orme
I'm looking at shooting a short film on a Varicam this summer, and I wanted to see how big of an external hard drive I'm going to get. How big of a file does the Varicam create? Thanks, Tim.
Seth Melnick
Varicam does not shot to files - it only shoots to tape

Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted January 2, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted January 2, 2008 The Varicam records DVCPRO HD, which is 100 Mbps (compressed 8-bit / 4:2:2 YCbCr / 960 x 720 / 59.94P). Once you extract 24P from 60P, it becomes 40 Mbps.
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted January 2, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted January 2, 2008 IIRC last time i sat and caprutes DVCPROHD100 it was around 1 g/b per minute of footage, though I could be wrong. (DV is 25MPS and it's about 1 g/b per 4.5min so 4X that would be around 1gb/min)
