Saul Rodgar Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 (edited) This from BBC news: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8012994.stm A Great shame. Indeed, one of my great personal heroes. His work on Black Narcissus and many other movies is outstanding to say the least. Not only that, but he went on to direct some feature films, which is unusual for DP's. The cinematographer's flag flies at half mast to honor the great Technicolor master! :o Edited April 22, 2009 by Saul Rodgar
Tom Jensen Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Several years ago I was at the ASC Awards and I went up to the bar to get a drink. Jack was talking to Freddy Young and they invited me to join them. I didn't have much to say, I just listened. It's sad to so all the old legends leaving us. He was a gentleman.
Serge Teulon Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 (edited) I unfortunately never had the pleasure to meet Jack but I was always told that he was a very nice guy. Big shame to loose such a great cinematographer and a nice guy. RIP Jack Edited April 22, 2009 by Serge Teulon
Matthew Buick Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 It's one of the sad sad losses of a great that you hope will never ever happen, but deep down you know it's an ineveibility. Still hurts though. :( God Bless You, Mr. Cardiff!
Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted April 22, 2009 Premium Member Posted April 22, 2009 The cinematographer's flag flies at half mast to honor the great Technicolor master! :o Indeed. Mr. Cardiff, you will be missed. I think the best thing we could do to honor him is to post our favorite frames from his films here. Here are some from "Black Narcissus." http://www.flickr.com/photos/18675976@N03/...57617191517882/
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 23, 2009 Premium Member Posted April 23, 2009 One of the giants... I've lost count of how many times I've watched and studied "Black Narcissus".
Brian Rose Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I didn't learn about this until a just the other day. I'm so sad! He was as great an influence on me and my film work as any director, and his "Magic Hour" is my favorite book on cinema. I emailed him a few times, but I suspect his health was on the wane, so his wife was the one to reply. Such a wonderful lady! I must get her address to express my sympathies. To paraphrase that immortal line from "A Matter of Life and Death," "Heaven is no longer starved for Technicolor..." Jack Cardiff, you will be missed, but never forgotten by this filmmaker! BR
Premium Member Tony Brown Posted May 2, 2009 Premium Member Posted May 2, 2009 I had the pleasure to work with him on Superman as well as his son who was operating. Jack's book was very interesting..... I envied him, despised him, liked him, respected him.....chapter by chapter. A Cinematographer and Playboy from the Golden Age Great innings Jack
Guest Tim Partridge Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Superman? I heard Jack Hildyard did some stuff on that film uncredited also. Cardiff shot Prince and the Pauper for the Salkinds around the same time, too.
Brian Rose Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Anyone know if there might be some kind of a tribute in the future, by the ASC and the Academy in the States, or BFI and the BSC in the Uk? BR
