His work on Black Narcissus and many other movies is outstanding to say the least. Not only that, but he went on to direct some feature films, which is unusual for DP's. Jack was talking to Freddy Young and they invited me to join them. I didn't have much to say, I just listened. It's sad to so all the old legends leaving us. He was a gentleman. He was as great an influence on me and my film work as any director, and his "Magic Hour" is my favorite book on cinema. I emailed him a few times, but I suspect his health was on the wane, so his wife was the one to reply. Such a wonderful lady! I must get her address to express my sympathies. To paraphrase that immortal line from "A Matter of Life and Death," "Heaven is no longer starved for Technicolor..." Jack Cardiff, you will be missed, but never forgotten by this filmmaker! Jack's book was very interesting..... I envied him, despised him, liked him, respected him.....chapter by chapter.
