Tons of ELmo stuff have no clue what is is worth HELP

My grandfather has passed away a couple years ago, and was a huge train chaser. I have no room in my house anymore, and I have to sell this ELMO stuff. I know it was used to record/watch/play movies of the trains he captured, but i have no clue what it is worth. Everything looks brand new, has original boxes no tears etc, manuals looks like the day he purchased them. He was really particular in putting plastic over everything and kept everything neat. The first item i was interested in pricing was this ELmo gs 1200 xenon machine. I don;t know what it is is, or what it is worth. I'm interested in selling these items.

Hi Richard. What a historical gold mine you have there. Your grandfather probably belonged to a movie making club that hit their hey day in the mid 70's to the mid to late 80's. They were really into travelog films and what I saw them do was as good as what is done today.

 

Back then there was discipline to plan ones shot, then add a relatively useful voice over explaining what was being viewed, and even music was mixed in. Your Elmo xenon projector was one of the most expensive pieces of Super-8 equipment ever made. New they sold for around 3,200 to 4,000 dollars, there was a play only model and a play/record model.

 

I was of the philosophy that it didn't make sense to use the record function on a xenon projector and prematurely burn up that very expensive xenon bulb. So if you have the play only version, new it was around 3,200 to 3,500 dollars, otherwise, if it is the record version, it could have cost around 3,500 to 4,000.

 

The xenon bulbs were expensive as well. I actually applied for and received a grant to get one when I was college for our film club, and after I had left the college and also after the 1994 Northridge earthquake the projector ended up in a condemned building.

 

Hazmat came by several months later and just ripped apart the film art building throwing away perfectly good pieces of equipment, including that xenon projector. Arrogant, state paid, pricks destroying things just to act self important.

 

Anyways, there are people out there salivating for that projector so take good care of it and hopefully they will contact you. If you have any further questions just post them here.

Sure. You can also get an approximate value of each item by searching ebay finished auctions for the past 30 days. How ironic that those film clubs existed because video was not in vogue yet, so ironically, any actual video of the meetings probably doesn't exist. This would be true of the several dozen to possibly a few hundred such clubs around the country back then.

This is the complete list of everything I have. Everything is in original boxes, mint condition, with manuals, stuff actually looks like it was never used that is how perfect he kept everything.

i really dont plan on getting top value for these machines,there is no longer room in the home. I am tempting to donate them to the historical railroad society where he showed his films.

Yeah right,

 

a bulb costs like $200 so selling the machine at $50 is plain stupid.

 

These top-models from top-brands will fetch a good price. Even with one-week auctions on eBay.

Unless you dump the goods somewhere close-by selling them will mean you have to pack and ship them.

Distance makes no difference then.

My GS1200 ( non xenon ) is an early version, which after some use were prone to scratch the film, the take up motor runs slow, and the sound system within the projector snaps and pops ( common problem ).

 

To obtain maximum cash for your projector, it needs to be in full working order, i've seen them fetch around 2000 euro's.

 

Regarding the rail roading films, there could be some amazing historical content captured within these films, i would sound out local archives, or if you're wanting to sell, offer on ebay, they will sell.

Sorry but this is not 100% accurate: I own three of these superb machines (2 halogens and 1 Xenon) and whilst they are real workhorses, they will probably have glitches, malfunctions or even worse after many years of non usage: that's pretty normal, for electronics 25+ years old. I had the chance to see a dedicated and skilled technician work on these projectors and believe me the amount of dedication it takes him to explore every possible source of troubles, is really astonishing. Every elctronic board is removed from the machine, checked, (soldering points) cleaned and reassembled. The same applies for the countless microswitches, solenoids, relais etc. Often they have to be cleaned or replaced. Also this projector is ill-known among S/8 enthusiasts for its 'partiality' in scratching films, if some parts which tend to wear, are not modified accordingly.

 

All that said I think € 400 is nowhere close even to purchasing a standard version, let alone a Xenon.

I know that 400euro is a extremely low price, but why not try? In the same sentence I said that they sell for up to 4000 so it was very unlikely that he would sell...

With some luck and patience you can get a standard version for 400-500euro on ebay, at least some time ago it was still possible.

 

As for the servicing, I know these mashines quiet well as I have been servicing and installing 8 and 16mm projectors with loophouses in museums.

When these projectors have to run every day for 4 months, there will certainly be some trouble, but until now I always could fix things (I faile with the eumigs , I newer understood how tho fix an eumig once it had started to shredder the film)

Believe me a GS is a totally different kettle of fish (and Eumigs are more simple than Elmos...): I own both machines and Eumig have never been a problem to fix, in fact I fix them myself. But a GS is beyond me...

 

AND... I've never seen a Xenon GS 1200 going as steep as $4000... They usually average between $2000-2500 (the latter figure if good servicing has been recently undertaken)

The elmo super-8 xenon projector is now selling on Ebay. starting bid 1,500, buy it now 2,000.

 

Without knowing the actual condition of the machine, it sounds like a reasonable opportunity. Kind of sad that probably no video footage exists of your grandfather actually showing off his films or of his set up. Kind of weird, a filmmaker no longer alive who showed his films a lot in public, yet no record of his ever doing that may exist.

 

I liked the sound the elmo 1200 and elmo 800's made when they ran film. I think there was an f1.0 lens and a f1.1 lens and the 1.0 lens was coveted by all.
