Deji Joseph
I've been trying to purchase material to reduce the intensity of light from a 60x40cm softbox. I wanted to attach it directly to the box using masking tape (dont worry it wont burn, using low energy bulbs). I can't want to use frames because of Lack of space and transport. Does anyone know where I could get gels and diffusion online? I live in London so don't mind popping into a shop aswell. Also if anyone has any advice or tips for buying Diffusion and gels let me know. Thanks, Dj
John David Miller
Perhaps you should try looking in a garment district for some muslin or different types of silk. Shower curtain may work nicely or tracing paper (1000H Vellum) from a art supply store. You can also contact Lee Filters to find the nearest distributor of gel/diffusion. Martin Hong
I was wondering the same, more like i needed to know the specific fabric to use, or any available type of fabric i could use to achieve different results. Beside silk, as for the budget problem. So far i got gauze, the textile one. And i think it could be best for scrim. And i want to know more options for diffusion as well
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted September 7, 2011 Premium Member Share Posted September 7, 2011 Be careful with heat... What I'll often use for "scrim" in lighting is the wire meshes you get to re-screen screen windows. Here in the US I can buy it @ the Home Depot and build a frame out of whatever works, and boom, instant and cheap scrims. As for diffusion, fabrics work quite well but you need to be careful about heat. In truth, when it comes to diffusion material, I quite recommend buying it from the manufacturer; just to keep things easy on me. Every roll of 216, for example, will act the same, so when I burn through one, I know the next will mix well with what I've already set up. I'd just go directly to the Manufactures: http://www.leefiltersusa.com/lighting/products/range/ref:I46C9C14F8BA5B/ http://www.rosco.com/ http://www.gamonline.com/
Martin Hong
Thanks Adrian, thats very helpful data. Although I'd like to know what kind of fabric i could get just for the practice sake. Because I currently live in Argentina, I saw that i could get Roscos cinegel from some local dealers, but i have no idea how much, one thing for sure is that will be 2 or 3 times more expensive than the price in US.. Thats how the things are here.... Edited September 9, 2011 by Martin Hong
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted September 9, 2011 Premium Member Share Posted September 9, 2011 Hell, i'd love to pay the prices I paid in Shanghai for beer, but that's just the way things are here ;) Good luck.

Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted September 11, 2011 Premium Member Share Posted September 11, 2011 I'm sure there are a few diffusion which take away 1/2 of a stop. off of the top of my head, I can't think of any. Though, if you're just looking for stop loss you'd want a net or scrim for that.
