Tanner Shelton
I want a new camera. I have been wanting one for a long time. I have been looking around for one but I can't find one that fits what I need. What I want is a camera that is no more then $2,000 at the most. I would like it to have changeable lenses. I would also like it to be HD. I want it to be able to record on SD cards or some other way besides tapes. I would like audio ports for extra mics and manual control buttons on the camera to control exposure and such. I dont know if it is at all possible to get one that cheap with all of those specifications but if it is anything like this then I would love it! Thank you all. Oh and one last note. I dont want it to be a small camcorder. I want it to be as professional as it can be.

Tanner Shelton
The top end of my budget is $2,000. I can't spend any more then that. That looks like a really nice camera though!
Travis Gray
Oh and one last note. I dont want it to be a small camcorder. I want it to be as professional as it can be. haha. that makes me laugh. Save up. Rent. The best you'll probably do is a cheaper DSLR (and remember you have to buy lenses then too), and even those leave something to be desired. Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted May 24, 2012 Premium Member Share Posted May 24, 2012 "Professional HD camera" and "under $2000" are sort of contradictory. The best you'll get if you don't want a mini HD palmcorder is a DSLR, and at that price limit, not even the best DSLR but something like a Canon T3i Rebel or Panasonic Lumix GH2. The "hacked" version of the GH2 has done quite well in HD tests. There is also a little palmcorder with a large sensor, the Sony NEX-VG10 but it's not a pro camera, and it doesn't do 24P. http://nofilmschool.com/2011/10/panasonic-gh2-hacked-again-record-advanced/ http://osgfilms.com/hack-the-panasonic-gh2/ http://www.43rumors.com/new-hacked-gh2-driftwoods-176mb-gop1-video-roundup/

Look at the VG20 instead if you want 24P.

Emanuel A Guedes
David is always as much helpful as he can be. Eleven years ago, when I was at Lisbon Film School, he already was a legend BTW. And never elitist, only pictures move his posts. Truly alive film school. There's no other here or anywhere else.
mo samra
Canon 7d. best best. great camera, only down side is the cropped sensor, but yo get a great camera for what your paying. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EOS-7D-18-0-MP-Digital-SLR-Camera-Black-Body-Only-NEW-USA-WARRANTY-/140673858977?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item20c0d0bda1#ht_8092wt_1139 that will leave you with a nice amount for a lens or two. Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted June 4, 2012 Premium Member Share Posted June 4, 2012 I think the GH2 has been mentioned already, but I'd probably rate it over the 7D. Less aliasing, and a somewhat better codec with third-party software. Don't assume smaller sensors are just empirically "worse". Holding things in focus on a 5D is nightmarish unless you have good equipment and a good focus puller, and the sort of productions where these cameras are seen are also the sorts of productions where you are less likely to have those things. mo samra
Very true phill, but the downside is obviously you're 50mm isn't going to be a genuine 50mm on the 7d. your going to need a wider range of lenses.

There's a crop factor on all non full frame sensors. You'll probably still want a wider range of lenses regardless, but the crop factor will usually always be there. A 50mm lens is always a 50mm lens, which on S35mm Film cameras / RED / Alexa / 7D will be a slight telephoto, a 'standard' lens on all of thease is about 32mm. For the last 30 years a 'standard' set of primes has been 18 - 85mm
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted June 4, 2012 Premium Member Share Posted June 4, 2012 As a cinematographer who has never shot a feature or TV show on a VistaVision or FF35 camera, I don't get the logic of calling a 50mm lens on a Super-35 camera, or APS-C camera, etc. not a "genuine" 50mm lens. A 50mm is a 50mm. What changes is the field of view, and how many people out there primarily shoot with FF35 cameras that their only experience with what a 50mm lens sees is on that type of camera? By now there must be more shooters using APS-C DSLR's.
