M Bao
I am pretty sure I have seen a thread with the answer on this forum. You can achieve it by putting some foil in a container, filling it with water and shining a light into it. Agitate to simulate ripples.

Brian Drysdale
You can achieve a water ripple effect using silver mylar,. Just bounce the light into a slightly crumpled sheet, while twisting it.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted August 25, 2013 Premium Member Share Posted August 25, 2013 There is a Rosco projector that creates a water pattern. Or maybe they made a 4x4 water box with a plexi bottom and rigged it to an overhead grid and shined a light through it.
Freya Black
You can achieve a water ripple effect using silver mylar,. Just bounce the light into a slightly crumpled sheet, while twisting it. I'm with Brian on this. I've always done it with reflectors by manually moving them to get the right effect. You can even use different coloured reflective materials to get different colour ripple effects. (or you could gel the lights too I suppose!) It's kind of fun, you should experiment a bit and see what you can come up with! Freya Edited August 25, 2013 by Freya Black
