British production firms spend big on 'vintage lenses' to profit from period drama boom

The film production industry has raised millions of pounds in finance to buy these “anamorphic lenses” in the past year, according to Investec Asset Finance, which has reported that the value of deals in the sector rose 1,620pc.

 

Why is the author calling anamorphic lenses 'vintage'? Plus, Downton Abbey and Alien (not sure about Polark) are shot with spherical lenses.

 

In other words, I have a feeling she doesn't know what she's talking about.

I'd be very surprised if anything on TV was shot 'Scope.

Incidentally I did notice a" clapper/loader" credit on Dickensian last night.

Who knows, maybe television DPs will start shooting 1.3x anamorphic on 4-perf Super 35 or 4:3 mode on the Alexa. I think that's what Linus Sandgren did on Gus Van Sant's Promised Land.

A friend of mine is shooting Poldark and it is spherical.

 

Regarding anamorphic for TV it is as easy as putting an anamorphic lens in the camera and frame for 16:9.

Lots of TV have been shot anamorphic just because its nice to get the flares and Bokha . " Vikings" shot in Ireland has used anamorphics for certain scenes great with the way it is shot lots of candles and hot windows .

We used anamorphics on Vikings on season 2 and 3.. not anymore! :)

Just watched an episode of 'The Shannara Chronicles' on MTV and it sure looks like they shoot with 2x scope lenses for a 1.78 aspect ratio as well. Looks pretty damn good for tv.
