Aneesh Kumar
Hello everyone, Any tips on how to maintain the continuity of smoke/haze across a scene? Interior and exterior. Thanks :)
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted January 19, 2022 Premium Member Share Posted January 19, 2022 With great difficulty? There's no trick, it's just hard work doing it by eye and trying to seal the space of any drafts. Outside, it's near impossible to contain haze. Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted January 19, 2022 Premium Member Share Posted January 19, 2022 I find you almost have to have someone permanently assigned to it.
Guy mastrion
This is extremely tricky but there is a method to help guide your judgement on set that involves setting up a measuring station, if you will, with a black flag, a small light and using a spot meter. Here's a link to a great post about the method from Jay Holben -I could not possibly explain it better. https://www.tvtechnology.com/opinions/using-a-light-meter-to-maintain-atmosphere Outside it is impossible.
Aneesh Kumar
I came across the same article just now on AC Shot craft by Jay holben. Interesting! Will definitely try this next time on set. Thanks Guy ? Thanks Phil & David. Have learnt so much from you guys on this forum...
Kyryll Sobolev
another trick i have seen a DP use - he would shine a laser pointer through the room, and that would give him an idea of the thickness of smoke obviously he developed his own system and trained his eye to it
Premium Member Gregory Irwin Posted January 19, 2022 Premium Member Share Posted January 19, 2022 Let’s not complicate this guys. As David has already stated, judge it by eye. As Phil stated, one guy should be in charge of monitoring and controlling the atmosphere in concert with the judgment of the DP. It should simply look continuous as the shooting day progresses. That’s all. G
