Elmo Super 106

Hello!

I just picked up a an Elmo Super 106 in near mint condition. It runs but the lightmeter dial doesn't move, even when pressing the battery check button I get no movement on the lightmeter indicator in the viewfinder. This camera runs on 4 AA batteries but the manual says there is also a lightmeter battery but I have no idea where that would go and the manual doesn't indicate where. Does anyone have experience with this camera?

filmkorn.org says 'some' need a lightmeter battery

super8wiki also says some were 'self charging' ?!

Damn, that's quite the concealed spot. I was thinking that this might be it but it doesn't budge. The battery must have leaked. Thanks Martin! I wasn't 100% sure this was the chamber until your message. Now I'm not sure how I will get it open.

Chris,

You might try spray electrical contact cleaner to get it opened up and pencil eraser to to clean those contacts once opened.

Another thing,  With mercury batteries no longer being made, there may be an issue with new battery voltage mismatch and may require a tech's help/adjustment for accurate meter readings.

I believe you can buy a voltage converter in which you insert a modern battery. It's the same size as the mercury battery.

There have been at least two versions of the 106:

The first generation needed a separate battery for the lightmeter.

The last generation didn’t need a separate battery anymore. Here, the compartment for the coin cell still exists, but is „sealed“. Also, in the manual for this generation, there’s a „no more separate battery needed“-sticker on all pages that still referenced the coin cell. (At least this was the case in the German manuals.)

These two versions can be easily found „in the wild“. There has been some debate whether there really was a „generation in between“ that was having a rechargeable coin cell (that was charged from the AA-batteries). This might have also been a „translation error“ in some manuals.
