If You Could APPRENTICE with ONE CINEMATOGRAPHER Now...?
Kevin Masuda replied to Tom Lowe's topic in Cinematographers
Probably Vittorio Storaro because I admire his work and his philosophy on not only Cinematography but life and art in general. He has a very philosophical and almost zen like approach to Cinematography which is something I love. -

Nice efx but the camera work needs....well work. Lessen the amount of handheld shots or at least try to keep them steady. I know it's difficult without some sort of steadicam device but try and fold your arms inward and hold the camera with both hands. Or take the camera and put it on a tripod and fold the legs out and crank the neck up and hold on to it, sort of like a cheap solution to steadicam. It may not be the best way but it can lessen the shakes when doing handheld work. Looks like you stretched the image so it would fit a wide aspect ratio, if you're going to shoot for a widescreen I suggest that you frame for whatever aspect ratio you're going for. In this case, 2:35:1. Kev

I have one of these, actually it's my dad's, it's an awesome camera. Top loading, manual exposure, two speeds, only thing with my dad's is the eye cushion fell apart(old rubber). Kev

Yeah both John and Gabriel did a wonderful job, their trailer has been around for a while now. They shot the trailer on a bolex with an anamorphic lens on the front, if you saw the behind the scenes you can see how it was attached. When it first came out there was a lot of talk amongst the fans to try and get Warner Bros to make a feature version of Grayson. Of course it never happened but it garnered a lot of buzz amongst the Comic Con and the net. They've made other films which you should be able to watch on ifilm, if they haven't taken them off already. Kev

I'm sure if the story was captivating and was a critical success, and the film was shown in nationwide theaters on 35mm, had maybe at least one known actor, then yes it probably could. Kev

You're right, I don't know why I missed that. Kev

Student FilmMaker needs urgent Help
Kevin Masuda replied to Amarjeet Singh Sadal's topic in Panasonic
It sounds like you are not the cinematographer on your project. If that's the case my suggestion is to find someone who has experience with either shooting film or using HD. I have seen the footage from an HVX w/PS Technik's Mini 35 and it's amazing. Might want to check out this site: www.dvxuser.com. You can look up answers to your questions there. Kev -
In "The Proposition," they used a painted sunset backdrop in one scene and it looked amazing. In order to make it close to the real thing you have to not only have a talented artist to paint the background but you have to light it just right, which takes time and effort. Read about it here:http://www.ascmag.com/magazine_dynamic/May2006/ThePropositon/page1.php# Kev

Take a look: http://www.redrockmicro.com/learn.html and: http://www.pstechnik.de/en/digitalfilm-mini35.php Those are probably the best that I know of, the others you mentioned are decent as well. The 35mm lens adapters do not record sound as they are just an adapter. You're HVX200 will be recording the sound, make sure you do have a good shotgun mike and possibly some lava mikes. Kev -
Funny. Kev

Not sure, maybe through the ASC but I'm not sure how to go about that. Kev Janusz? Schindlers List, Munich...etc. Kev

Yeah The Aranda Group in Australia does wonderful work. Talk to Bruce at Aranda, he's a great help. Kev

Practice with both film and video. Maybe try some super 8, a lot cheaper than 16mm. As far as what camera to invest in, it all depends on how much you're willing to spend. What's your budget like for a camera? Two cameras out there that you might want to look at: DVX-100B or the new Sony HVR-V1U(which is an HDV 24p capable camera). Kev

When did you first get interested...
Kevin Masuda replied to Matthew Buick's topic in Cinematographers
My dad paints but he was also into photography, same thing with my uncle so I was always around this stuff and naturally got interested. Kev Forgot the age, I had a small interest in it when I was around 6 but I really didn't start getting really interested until I was in high school. So you could say that I started making movies when I was 16, I'm 27 now. Kev -

I bought the DVD in November and I love the film. David: I love the story you told about the American flag that was made with black and white color instead of the red white and blue for Northfork, was it Northfork or some other flick? I've gotta watch it again. I love Vittorio's intro with the magic light bulb, and his story about how he has always been Vittorio Storaro even before his success. Kev
