Hi everyone, I applied for AFI cinematography program for this fall, I submitted only one short film that I made for the purpose of applying to AFI, I got interviewed based on that but unfortunately didn't get accepted. I am going to re-apply for next fall, I I need some advice from people who went to AFI and maybe can share the portfolio that got them accepted to AFI f. Perhaps you guys can give me suggestions on making a stronger portfolio. Anybody here got accepted this year? What kind of work did you guys submit to AFI? what are they looking for in an applicant's work? Here is the film I submitted last year: http://www.vimeo.com/1197408 Any comments are suggestions are welcomed. Thanks Hong

Developing cost about $150 (10 rolls), telecine at Spectra cost almost $350, so total cost was about =$500. Track 1 is heartstrings by secret garden.

UCLA extension offers a class called "Arriflex Certification for Camera Assistants" every summer, I took it in 2004, u get hands on training with all the ARRI cameras including the Arricam line. I highly recommend it.

Lust, Caution

I saw this film last week, great film, beautiful cinematography. I don't think Ang Lee was trying to channel Wong Kar Wai at all, they both have very different styles. I guess shots of Tony Leung and a girl wearing a Qi Pao made it looks similar to In the Mood for Love, but that's the only similarity. I read somewhere that Wong Kar Wai told Ang Lee that Brokeback Mountain was the best film of that year. -

Bill, yes that was Jack Cooperman's class. Do you have any setups from that class? Riku, you're right I didn't use fill, just the 5K bouncing from the wall. The fridge looks bright because I overexposed one stop. This is another example from the same setup, I just turned on the practicals on the ceiling, less smoke and exposed normally. I was trying to make it look like it's later in the day.

Great stuff guys! This is a still from a lighting class I took last fall, I put a 5K outside the door behind the fridge and a 2' 4 bank Kino inside the fridge.

Arriflex certification for Camera Assistants
Hong Suwadji replied to Hong Suwadji's topic in General Discussion
I'm going to take UCLA's Arriflex certification for camera assistant class at the end of June, should I still take the camera assistant workshop in Rockport maine, or just go for the camera operator workshop?, I mean will the camera assistant class in Maine pretty much the same with the Arriflex workshop at UCLA? Any opinions? Thanks -
Arriflex certification for Camera Assistants
Hong Suwadji replied to Hong Suwadji's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the info guys, Matt, I'm also considering the camera assistant workshop in Maine, have you taken this workshop? Does anybody know which one is better? The Arriflex workshop cost $795, the Maine Workshop cost $1295 (or $1795 combined with the camera operator workshop) plus about $700- $880 for accomodation. I want to take these workshops, so if anybody have any advice, please let me know. Thanks Hong -
Hello, I am interested in this workshop, does anybody have any information (or experience) about this workshop? Does Arri offer this workshop often or is it only available through UCLA extension? Does Panavision offer a similar workshop? Will it help me get a job as a camera assistant if I have an Arriflex certificate?
