  1. It would also be nice if there were a law that made sure the "gas guzzler" tax money was used in environmental research or practice. The fact that they don't even put it back into the right system pisses me off.... I don't want to outlaw SUVs, or the like. For gods sake I love muscle cars from the late sixties/early seventies! The fact is most peeps aren't interested in performance value beyond reliability, which is fine because hybrids/electrics are very reliable. More so than cumbustion cars.. They spend for the social value of having a particular car. These huge monstrosities they call SUVs are modern day knights armor/armour. Anyway, I'm a "conservative" type not allied with any political group. Not trying to make it more political here BUT,.....W and his clan are wayyy out in left feild.(uh, I mean right..) I think maybe they've been affected by a little heat stroke. :P I know bad joke....
  2. Thats because he writes his own jokes. For some reason he never wanted to use Steven Colberts...? :D
  3. early renny harlin. He brought us such classics as die hard 2, cliffhanger(john lithgow is great), deep blue sea, long kiss goodnight, driven, prison, cutthroat island, and many, many more....
  4. Mark Twain-"...statistics are often used to lie to the public because most people do not understand how statistics work. " Global warming is here. I know 'cause it's hotter than a motherf*cker out there. Still, I really want to drive a '69 Camaro. What can I say, I'm human. Seriously, I just wanted to put a link up to amazon for a book about statistics. It was written a long time ago about mostly monetary benefits of tweaking numbers and making stats work in your favor even though they in "fact" go against an agenda you are trying to push.I thought most people on this thread might get a kick out of it. You can pick it up at used book stores for about $7. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/039331072...1648115?ie=UTF8 I do believe the current trend in global warming is caused by our group of mammals, however I've also read papers/articles that are complete fabrications in favor of the Human Cause. Doesn't make it less true...but why lie? I don't see a good reason NOT to try and look forward to a cleaner Earth. This reminds me of a commercial in Texas. We love oil, not litter, hehehe. The advert goes like this... A biker pulls up to a stop light and throws a bag of used fast food fare on a geriatric woman. He then speeds off.....Narrator:" Would you treat your mother like this?" Stupid but funny. -Jon-Hebert
  5. Yeah, it's kinda weird to think of "soviet" directors being influenced by american cinema. Eisenstien was in love with Walt Disney. Loved him and the studio. For some reason I never saw that coming until I started reading more about russian cinema. Those russians can film movies like they can build a T4 tank, VERY WELL!!!
  6. True. I'm trying to say that about all the aspects that go into filmmaking. People like what they like. No judgement. I know some music-people that swear if "good" music was put on the radio and people had a chance to listen Brittany Spears would not be #1 on the charts.(whenever that was...) Of course the "good" music is the kind they listen to. My point is that there is a learning/acceptance curve when you come from a populist background in entertainment. Thats all. Growing. I don't find that patronising. But I could be a great, big a**hole, too. :) It's up to you to tell me!!! Thanks.
  7. Hehe...I'm also excited to see this film. I like Mann very much. The Insider is one of my favorite films. Hate the show but, like you, this thread has inspired me to spend $12 bucks of my hard earned money. The idea of "messy" and "clean" are funny things. When I think of the story idea of Vice and the minds eye view of the show from my younger days, I think "clean and crisp". What we see in trailers is sometimes not the same as in theatres...er, sometimes. :D I just can't wait to see what the digital age brings us in the next ten or so years...
  8. Real name is at the bottom of my posts, Jon-Hebert Barto, I like B&W....Blah,blah,blah. Wow, never expected such a response. Indeed I did make generalisations. I never asked "most" Americans anything. At most I've only talked to , what, a million people in my life time? Probably less, but including such conversations as, " I'd like $20 on pump #5, please", and "Thanks, I'll biggie size for an additional .45 cents." I'm not saying there is a singularity here, however. "Popular Culture"=Most people, in my opinion. I'm startled by some responses here, ... I feel the "majority" of people in America , me being American, are not as educated in the cinema as in all other media, be it TV, print, internet, and all its related/inherent art forms, such as advertising, etc. "Media savvy" rarely includes cinema, IMHO. Simply put, most peeps do think of movies as an entertainment event. No judgement here. It is about exposure..... This is in all regards to the idea of Box office = quality. Box office is an absolutely justifiable means to measure audience entertainment. Box office is not a measure of quality beyond entertainment....Sorry if you disagree. I do think you walk on quicksand if you believe boxoffice is of any significance beyond this. As for these generalisations being "idiotic", of course I disagree. Believe it or not I can tie my own shoes! The "narrow minded"-"naive" issue I'm more inclined to listen to.... :) Cheers Keith.
  9. No way, Boddington!! Americans are number one !!!! :D USA, USA, USA!!!! (sarcasm...)
  10. Average hollywood fare. A teen movie that came about 3 years ago called "ClockStoppers" had the same basic premise and was much more entertaining to me. It was directed by that Fraker character from the Star Trek next gen show... Christopher Walken should have been in the film the whole time...Who can't love this guy...? He makes hollywood turds come out less smelly..... :P I know I'm showing my ass here but,.. The director should have cut in a 5 min. montage of slow-motion boob shots from around the world. Just plain insane Airplane type stuff. Would have made it better. Sometimes the more juvenile aspects of a story can actually help the film more when exagerated. Natl-Lamp Vacation film are an example. My 2 cents...
  11. Sorry to be posting one after another...But I forgot to ask, Is there a new edition of this dvd? Reason being the cover art I recently saw in the store is not the same as my version at home. Thanks...
  12. I also discovered this title on criterion!! Just goes to show how important criterion is as a dvd label...I never even heard of it before I saw it on the shelf at Borders. I was in a big Ivans Childhood kick at the time... Any people see the Red Tent, also by Kalatoso..something or another? Same director , I mean.
  13. IN REGARDS TO THE PUBLIC AND CINEMA We look at cinema as art. We also know art CAN be entertainment. We must remember appreciation of art is acquired! Simply put, every human being is born tapping their feet to 4/4 time. It is universal. Turning on to Bach however, well, you must learn to appreciate it. Most americans would rather eat a hotdog than filet mignon. I'm not making this a working class issue! I am simply stating most americans do not have that appreciation for cinema art as most of us do. Again, this has nothing to do with class or social structure. Much like I cannot appreciate the athleticism of an NBA basket ball player because I have no educated foundation on which to form a critique!!! Most americans you ask think american idol produces the worlds great singers!!! Most americans you ask will say star wars episode III contained the best acting they've ever seen. Again, some are more exposed than others and more exposure means a better education. You're walking on quicksand if the ideal is a popular entertainment poll. Terra Firma lies on the other side education....
  14. This is a great thread! Mullen:"...No, it's not technically perfect, it doesn't look like film, and it doesn't even conform to conventional notions of beauty, which is all the more reason why it is exciting to see in a studio production,..." Agreed. The more capture material we have the better. Each has its own inherent quality. How it is used makes all the difference! I love the look of everything from super-8 to 35mm and the higher end video formats. Technology in film is no different than technology in any other domain. You use it the wrong way and it will turn sour on you. Regarding compression artifacts, well that is something I cannot abide by....of course some our most beloved artists have used the "limitations" of their given medium to highten our senses in the most bizarre ways, which is a great thing! This thread has spurred my interest in Miami Vice. I will go see it now.... always admired Mann. I like Mohicans, Insider, Heat, but had no interest in the story of Vice whatsoever. Hated the show!!! Collateral let me down in a big way...
  15. I believe you are thinking of "FILM MAKERS GUIDE TO SUPER-8" by the editors of SUPER-8 MAGAZINE. It was my first filmmaking book ever. It's hardback with a red dust jacket. It came out in 1980. Is this it? Also, I don't remember any "THX 1138" stuff in there.....fantasy fx stuff, yes.
  16. "Sculpting in Time" is badass...period. As a matter of fact, I recommend those looking for books to read on the subject of film theory to read Tarkovskys book then go directly to Eisenstiens work. Diametrically opposed views from two giants of not only Russian cinema, but world cinema. Good calls by both of you. :D
  17. Couldn't help but write in with my favorite "old" book... Bela Balazs' " THEORY OF THE FILM". He wrote the first published formal theory on film and championed the "film as art" movement very early on. This, his last, book came out in 1945, a few years before his death. His analysis of the power of the close-up, camera angle, etc., are written about in a dated style, however the text still stands on its own. If you appreciate the technical virtuoisity of Riefenstahl, Pudovkin, etc., this is a must have. Chapters include IN PRAISE OF THEORY, A NEW FORM-LANGUAGE, VISUAL CULTURE, THE CREATIVE CAMERA, EDITING, EXPRESSIVE TECHNIQUE, FORMALISM OF THE AVANT-GARDE, SOUND THEORY, PROBLEMS OF STYLE, and more. Technical writing at its most emotional!
  18. Le Mepris Bande a part Une femme est une femme Alphaville Watching anything by him is cool, not a waste of time. I've only seen about 10 films of his, however. My favorites are Le Mepris and Bande a part.
  19. Whoa.... I don't know what to say... England has a higher percentage of divorce and alchoholism than the USA, Germany, France, Canada, etc. In a recent poll %21 of Brazilian men thought it would be "OK" to physically beat their wives for cheating on them. (All the South American countries have higher percentages than the USA and European contries..does this say something about their culture? I'm not being sarcastic.) In America, we have the death penalty and lots of guns. And I have to admit, a really stupid president. Sure, Americans sack there own cities after a sports championship. But Europeans kill each other in mob frenzy over a penalty shot in a soccer game. On the other hand, my parents live in Mississippi. Last time I checked it was in the USA. They only have one abortion clinic in the whole state....hmmmm. I think this has more to do with the human condition than any one country being socially superior to another. This is all a lot of mumbo-jumbo, I know. I guess what I'm trying to say is the homo-sapiens got a crack at it and they're failing miserably. :o Guns, I'm for 'em. Why? I never heard of a gun killing anyone. People kill people. Until we figure out the deeper truth behind that fact it's all hogwash....
  20. Good humor, good humor! We need more of that on this site :D
  21. santo: Yeah, dude, basic lighting theory is the same for everything from still photography to IMAX photography, but that doesn't change the fact that super8 cameras are inherently limited by thier own size and optics that come glued to them! Maybe thats why they are rec'ing books from your outdated world\time? As far as your Lipton comment, who the f*ck are you? I've been reading posts on this forum since before I was a member and never called you out before, preferring to sit back and laugh my ass off at you, but I have to say you are lost! Every thread you contribute to is left with the slimy, Cthulu-like trail of a asinine wanna-be. You always seem to push "how smart " you are without ever really contributing to the dicussion in a educated, humble way.....Like Mr. Mullen. I mean, Mr. Mullen ASC!!! Get a clue, dude... -Jonnie
  22. Kid- er,..Mr. Buick- Wanting to be a filmmaker is great! But you need to learn ALOT before you start shooting 35. It's not even really about money......not at your stated age. If I ran into a 15 year old with a nice 35mm camera I'd kick his ass, then I'd find his parents and kick both mom and dads asses at the same time. Maybe I wouldn't steal the camera.... <_< :D All kidding aside, you really need to learn right now. Buy books and read, read, read, read, read, read. You can also pick up a crappy VHS-C camcorder for around $25 at a garage sale, yes you can still find tape for it. Actually any cheap, old camcorder will do just fine as a capturing device for you. Maybe when you're at the next stage, lets say end of high school, you schould purchase a nice super8 to make some short-films with a dedicated group of friends. That being said, buck up. Take your hits and lick your wounds. If you think these guys are "mean" or "hurtful" you will never even get out of high school. -Jonnie
  23. Try Bernies site....http://www.super16inc.com/ -Jonnie
  24. No wonder Tarantino and Coppola are together...They both fuse nostalgia for their youth in their work, moreso than others I believe. I love Sophia but hope she doesn't make all her movies with rich-teen-pop music from the 1980s. Then again, what the hell do I know. She can make her movies any way she wants to! I'm sure this will be a fine film. For some reason I don't see her making any stinkers in her career. Kinda like her poppa...well, except for "Jack"! Freya- M.B.V. suppossedly has a boxed set coming out some day?! At least thats what I've heard. Kevin Sheilds is reported to have a whole albums worth of never released material. Anyway, just thought you'd like to hear from the rumor mill. :)
  25. I'm pretty sure all you guys are way smarter than I , but you're getting way to deep in semantics. "what really is stealing...?" C'mon....if I take something that doesn't belong to me, it's stealing. Simple. Yes, simple. If I sneak into a theatre I'm not taking material that does not belong to me. However it is theft of service. The theatre says, " Hey kid, give me 8 bucks and I'll show you something I think you'll be entertained by for 90 minutes." It's a hedge bet. Maybe I'll hate it, but we make a deal with each other when I buy that ticket. (soap box) I hate these people that go into a restaurant, order their food, eat it, then say they want their money back 'cause " the food sucked and your sign reads '..best meatloaf in town...'" They're the theives in my book. Of service and product. "Technically they're at fault for false adverts..." WTF? These types should get a life....Just don't go back to that restaurant!!! The internet is one giant anomaly...I don't think I'll ever "get it". If a law is stupid, it's still a law. Hell, in Houston I can get a ticket for spitting on the sidewalk!?! Ripping DVDs, downloading stolen software, it's all bad. Even when sh#t people ("evil corporations") are getting hurt by it. My point is that getting into semantics to justify stealing because you don't like a corporations reason for their anti-piracy propaganda is lame. I know that these guys are bastards! Stealing is still wrong no matter what shape or form, even if you're stealing from SATAN!!!
