I keep deleting them by trying to add more. sorry well here they are AGAIN!
  3. I own a Sekonic-L 358. Works fine for me. and only 300$ canadian
  4. I liked the theme from kill bill vol 1. you only hear it once in the movie and once on the dvd menu. Halloween of course is classic, also Escape from newyork.
  5. wow, very nice chayse. the look kind of reminds me of munich.
  6. I dident care much for the illusionist myself, but dick pope sure knows how to make actors look good. My pick would have to be children of men no doubt emanual lubezki will win. Im a bit dissapointed The good sheperd or marie antionette was not picked. I would of left out the illusionist in place for one of those choices, but thats my opinion.
  7. I finaly saw this movie, good movie great use of color and shadows.
  8. I understand what you where going for with the bright interiors for the horror short, I think a softer light source would of been better, video doesent handle hard light that well. the dark basement stuff was well done reminded me of Hostle with a bit of blue velvet.
  9. well if you will probly want to shoot it in 24p mode if your just planning to realease on dvd, for atheatrical realease you should shoot 24p advanced. just so you know the strobing effect you get in 24 p modes is normal just becarful on on pans to minimize the effect, I think on the widest lens it should take an object 7 seconds to cross the screen, now you dont have to fallow that rule. I cant really tell you what settings to use because i havent seen the location or read the script, I usually shoot in cinegamma and have detail level at about -3 and v detail at -3 and detail coring at about +7, these settings will give your image a softer edge, and the detail coring helps reduce noise that may occur. now if you want a bright saturated look for you short, shoot with matrix on cinelike, crush down the master peds around -5 or more( master peds will increase contrast giving you darker blacks it also gives more saturated colors) and boost up the chroma levles at maybe a +4 or higher. if you want a desaturated look keep the matrix at normal you can still crush down the master peds( I find its always good to keep them down to at least -5) and keep the chroma level at -7 this will decreas saturation even more. you can always desaturate more in post. Do some tests try to go to the locations ahead of time and go through all the settings at different levles. and dont forget about the color temperature setting, if you want a cooler or warm look. as for direct sunlight you will want some silks, nets and bounce boards,
  10. yeah hes underexposed. but the camera is exposed to somthing else in the frame. at the beginning in one scene AL gets handed an orange you cant even see it, but the camera is exposed for the party going on outside. the difference, well id say if the scene was underxposed, the whole frame would have to be underexposed, low light scenes, theres somthing in the frame thats set to proper exposer. the movie is dark but its not like willis turned off all the lights then rolled a camera, you can still see somthing. I wonder if gordon willis pushed the stock, anyone know???
  11. Well I would say somthing like 2000k would be, maybe a sunrise or sunset (but that could vary quite a bit) 4100K-4900- early morning or late afternoon daylight maybe.( if your not in the shade) 5000k-6000k-average daylight 8000k-afternoon sunlight in the shade Just go out with a video camera and do tests on different times through out the day, use the preset at 3200k and you will see how blue the light will looks. If you have acces to lights and gels do some tests. I shot a movie around a campfire, and I found a 1/2 CTO bounced into a gold reflector gave me the fire light I was looking for, it perfectly matched the real fire light. of course the color temperatur of the fire could depend on how big the fire is, you may want to use a half straw instead. which is the same temperature as cto its just more yellow.
  12. Well good luck chayse, I hope you get the camera and package you need. I recently completed a feature length film in believe it or not 6 days! (IS THIS A RECORD??) I dident think it could be done, but we did it, although we where puttung in 18-20 hour days we had virtually no budget, most of it was shot in 2 apartments, and 1 night club, which I had to make it look like was 4 different clubs,it was shot on the 1 dvx100a, And we had a very small crew. Just dont sweat aboat the short time limit, you can do it.
  13. Well you can also find a good part time job, so you can pay the bills in between shoots. Im a strugling DOP myself. Ive made some great money and alot of times I work for free or virtually nothing to build up my resume and reputation. But since I also work part time in a box store I can pay the bills in between film jobs. Ive taken weeks off to dop a movie or music video, and I still have that job to come back too when the shoot is over, Im actually surprised they havent fired me, for all the work I miss, But they seem to like me, and they understand my situation. Now alot of places wont give you the time off to work on a set, if thats the case look for another job untill you find one that is flexible for your unpredictable lifestyle
  14. I like mini dv, but iam surprised that he's going with the PD-150, and not with the DVX100 or even the XL series. At least he would have more image controll, like cinegamma, detail level, masterpeds and of coarse 24p. Its been a while since Ive used the pd150 but if I remeber the only thing its good for is shooting under low light, which the above cameras can easily do depending on the settings I guess my point is if your going for a minidv look then why dont you get the best minidv camera around??
  15. Hi I just watched Miami vice on dvd, know I know it was shot on HD, but was there some scenes shot on film??? because I watched the special features and It looked like they had some film cameras on set. when it shows the blocking of the apartment scene it looks like they had film cameras. I cant really remember but its been bugging me for a few days,I might rent the movie again. but does anyone know? Also the scene when Yuro is on the phone in his office looks like it was shot on film, I could be wrong?
  16. Theres still lots of great looking movies I havent seen yet. but my list so far is Marie Antionette(beautifull lighting, excellent camera work, and composition) The Good Sheperd(In terms of lighting this is my favorite movie I've seen this year) The Black Dahlia(amazing camera work, dark film noir lighting, and some amazing stedicam shots) Little Children(I want to see this movie again cause i was to into the story to pay attention the cinematography, but i did notice the lighting was very natural and warm and at times very dark and cold, theres one scene at the pool that must of been 5 or 6 shots put together so it looked like 1 long stedicam shot) Miami Vice( the best hd movie ive seen this year, Dark and gritty they really used the HD medium for its purpose and not tried to make people think "hey was that shot on film") The Prestige( I did not like this movie, but the lighting was amazing, seeing a movie like this makes me wonder why we need a DI?) Im really looking forward to seeing Children of Men,Pans Labrynth,Lady in the water,Apocolypto Theres still lots of great looking movies I havent seen yet. but my list so far is Marie Antionette(beautifull lighting, excellent camera work, and composition) The Good Sheperd(In terms of lighting this is my favorite movie I've seen this year) The Black Dahlia(amazing camera work, dark film noir lighting, and some amazing stedicam shots) Little Children(I want to see this movie again cause i was to into the story to pay attention to the cinematography, but i did notice the lighting was very natural and warm and at times very dark and cold, theres one scene at the pool that must of been 5 or 6 shots put together so it looked like 1 long stedicam shot) Miami Vice( the best hd movie ive seen this year, Dark and gritty they really used the HD medium for its purpose and not tried to make people think "hey was that shot on film") The Prestige( I did not like this movie, but the lighting was amazing, seeing a movie like this makes me wonder why we need a DI?) 17. I sure dont want a wedding video look! I just like what the promist does to highlights, like in Casino, or Bringing out the Dead. Do you know what Robert Richardson used in those movies? But I think I will stick to 1/2 promist instead of a 3.
  18. hey, I was wondering if anyone has ever used diffusion filters on the dvx100a. I like the look of diffusion, but ive only ever seen it on 35mm film. would diffusion on minidv lose image quality?? I was interested in purchasing the Black Promist filter from tiffen, I want a strong effect from it so i was thinking of getting a 3black pro mist.
  19. I just ordered the sekonic L358, thanks troy for the link.
  20. I enjoyed this movie alot, Im surprised! because most 3 hour talking head movies I get bored. I would like to see richardson and oliver stone make another movie together, cause I found stones movies went down hill lately. all though I still havent seen world trade center.
  21. I just watched the good shepard. Great movie. really good performances by matt damon, john turoturo, i even liked angilina jolie. Cinematography was great, Robert Richardson at his best, hot top lighting with diffusion, not quite as extream as casino or jfk.but it was used very well. hot table tops that glow, lots of silloettes. He must of shot wide open most of the time lots of shallow depth of field, but the wide shots extreamly sharp with excellent composition. Im not sure what film stocks he used probly a slow stock like 200, I cant wait to read the up coming asc magazine. There must of been a DI,because theres alot of scenes that start out as black and white than fade into color. the whole movie also had a real bleak desaturated tone to it. go see this movie.
