  1. It will be acceptible for theatrical release in my opinion. Also look into a 35mm lens adapter.
  2. I belive that you can use the camera to transfer P2 files via firewire.
  3. To add to my previous post, if you shot something that was lit just right on regular NTSC video (say with a XL1s or GL2), it would be possible to make it look like a movie.
  4. I'll clarify on tis simple response: Are you asking resolution ? - no, not direct from the camera as it is. there are two options, the first, easiest and cheepest is to upsize in post via the tutorials found on DVX User. The second is to get the andromida modification like you mentioned. Its more expensive, is warnty voiding and limits the mobility ofthe camera. BUT, it has AMAZING color reproduction and VERY nice rezolution. Still not the same as 35mm film but much more acceptible. Are you asking about latitude ? - no, but it is much closer then any camera (except maybe the XL2) in its price range. Are you asking about aspect ratio ? - yes, see the DVX User tutorial mentioned aove. Are you asking about depth of field ? - no, unless you were to get a 35adapter that would allow you to use 35mm camera lenses, giving you the same DOF as most cine cameras. there are many other tricks to get shallow DOF. Are you asking about colour depth ? - nothing (except the higher end HD cameras maybe) can rival 35mm (or 16mm for that matter) for color depth/reproduction. but, as with latitude, it is likely the best you will find in this price range. Are you asking about variable speed shooting ? - no, but with After Effects 7 or later you can acheive a VERY good substitute via pixle motion time remaping. it actualy creates frames to give video a (almost) true slow motion effect. Hope that helpped a little, Dory
  5. well, I know i will get lynched for saying this but: FILM look is simply what an image would look like if it were shot on a film camera, regardless of lights or anything else except frame rate (usualy 24fps), gamma, color curves etc.. MOVIE look is what most people associate with anything that they have seen in the theatires, since it is in a controlled setting (usualy) and can be manipulated by lighting and other stuff. Example, if your were to look some shots of a guy skiing that was shot on 16mm (i am thinking of warren miller films), you would think "that was shot on film." If you looked at a shot from a scripted drama (or anything shot on film) in a studio with lighting and such, you wuld probobly think "that was shot on film, but i wonder how they made it look so cool!!!???" Thats my take on the whole film vs video look. I know alot of the others here will dissagree but if you think about it (and can understand how i wrote that) I think you will agree.
  6. For a movie look it is one of the most important elements. For a film look its not important.
  7. Head over to dvxuser.com and check out some of the clips the guys over there have posted.
  8. just get like two 10 hour battaries for cheep of eBay and leave the thing on the whole time.
  9. Yeah use only one kind fo tape (I found that out the hard way myself). Also, I recently had a shoot where the camera that recorded the footage and a sony handicam both played part of it back with massive dropouts. However, when I got home and used a GL1 I had acces to, it worked beautifuly.
  10. yeah man I cant wait to start playing around with it.
  11. Well I did it. I bought myself a DVX100. Thanks for your help kids  !
  12. Haha you know something I love that smell so much! I was just reccomending that if you wanted to shoot a longerish film, with your budget, HD would allow for a larger shooting ratio. But it sounds as if you've got worked out better now so more power to ya :D B) ! Good luck
  13. Michale, Yeah, the XL1s has that cheezey movie mode. Thanks all for your input! Unfortunetly the DVX100 (not a or B) is really my only option other then the XL1s, and it sounds like thats the way I'm going to go. Oh and Michale, do you have a relitive named Nate who works for NWD films?
  14. Take your budget for film and camera rental and rent a good HDCAM rig or something in the likes of that. Then color correct in post.
  15. Hey all, I am down to pretty much two choices. Well three really I guess. I am now trying to decide between getting a XL1s (maybe from amazon, maybe from ebay), DVX100 (ebay) or possibly a DVX100a. Idealy I'd be able to get a DVX100 from BH. Hell, idealy I'd be able to get a HPX500 from BH but no such (financial) luck. Being a unemployed homeschooled highschool student with a budget of about $1550, I am reduced to using older technology untill I can afford a better camera  . What I want to know is, if the DVX100a falls through (the bid goes higer then I can afford), which between the XL1s or the DVX100 would be a better choice. Like everyone, I want to get an almost film look. Not a movie look, a film look. I dont think I ever shoot stuff that would be artificialy lit, I cant really haul a light kid around in the back country whilst skiing or down a freeride mountain bike run. just doesnt work like that. I have heard that the DVX100 has an audio problem at 24p (and 30p???), but since I hardly ever record dialog, i dont think that will be too much of a problem. The other thing, what image controlls does it have? I cant seem to find any info on the panasonic website. Now, on the other hand, I know and trust Canon, know people who swear by the XL1s (and some color correction), like the idea that it can be rested on ones shoulder, like the fact that it has interchangeble lenses (and a longer stock lens), even though I may have a HD camera before I'd change the lens. I guess my real question is: Do I take a chance with the DVX100 or do I go with the XL1s which I have actually had a little experance (like 30 minutes at the local ROP lab with a friend) and know the brand name and such. Anyway, thats it. I know its not the ideal situation but thats how it is for me. I'd wait longer and aqquire more money but I need the camera before ski seasno starts and want some time to get aqquanted with said camera. Thanks, Dory
  16. Wow david I never knew you DP'd that. i never really like the story or characters but thought the cinematography was awesome!
  17. does it ship with any P2 cards or would I need to buy them seperately? also does anyone know of a way to get a good discount from panasonic or one of their dealers? thanks, dory
  18. That was some good stuff! The music wasn't too bad either. I liked the yellow look alot and the softness of the whole thing. didn't like the vignette so much tho..
  19. Kathy- welcome to the world of Digetal Video production! The GL2 is a good camera, I use one a good deal. THey arnt the most robust thing in the world, but they have a good quality picture and some nice features. As far as special editing equipment, the only things you need are a firewire port on your mac or pc, a firewire cable and some editing software. If your looking for something in that budget area tho, you might want to look at the panasonic dvx100b from B&H. they havea pretty good deal on it. I'm planning on getting one myself in a few weeks. Hope that helpped and once again welcome! Dory
  20. THese will be very helpful when i get my camera! Thank you!
  21. Hey all I am trying to find some shots from the XL2 in the snow. does anybody have any?
  22. The body+lens or just the body? How low would you be willing to go? thanks, dory
