If you have a color request please PM me I'll be glad to do it. $70+ $10 shipping usps in the states, $14 international. Ill post a pic soon.
  4. A western dolly can be pretty smooth with the tires deflated a little but only on a really smooth road. you will see all the dips and small imperfections as well as any body movements of the camera team on the dolly. I wouldnt compare it to a dolly on track. I havent seen skate wheels for a western dolly as it is wider than standard track.
  5. Mole reflectors can burn esp in older units and units 2k and up. essentially dust gets on the reflector and when heated burns the reflector. Check the reflector next time, units that get exposed to weather, etc can rust as well. all this can affect a lamps output. also the reflector could have been out of focus. the position of the reflector in reference to the filament.
  6. call modern studio, they used to have a truss style dolly that had curves, I don't know if the still do or might have one in stock. they do rent via equip a grip.
  7. you are correct, the professor should have ordered ears instead of pins. Combo stands are ok, mombos and hihi walkers are better. you should tie off the top two corners with 4 ropes. two ropes tie forward and two ropes tie back, so that the frame will not move. tie the ropes to any thing of weight, trees cars posts your proffesor etc. we often use pitons in parking lots to tie down to. you can drive a piton into almost any crack. we usually also post a man on one of the stands to make double sure the frame is secure.
  8. What you are looking for is called a C-boom. Modern studio make one, and American Grip makes one. Use a steel Combo stand or heavier duty stand when doing this. Use a ratchet strap to counter the weight.
  9. call fisher they will have track. you wont be able to find a subrentale that beats the manufacturer's price.
  10. Lighting budget $50 1 20" Paper lantern(chinese lantern) 1 250w lamp ( BCA, household style, etc) 2 15ft zip cord stingers handfull of thumbtacks 1 black garbage bag for flagging the light off the background 1 roll of tape build the paper lantern with the 250w lamp slip the garbage bag over the ball leaving ventilation through the top, and sufficient light through the bottom (you'll cut the bottom off the bag so its a tube) use thumb tacks to hold the lamp over the table ( centered so that it is lit evenly) run power using the zip cord stingers so they can be hidden along a corner or molding in the deep background. adjust the garbage bag flag height so that the background walls arent over lit with the tape. have fun look at it not as a obstacle but as a way to be efficient.
  11. DO NOT USE FLOUR it can explode! Pounce bags can be filled with a variety of materials, be wary of flambility and flash fires. Use a fullers earth substitute as fullers earth has been shown to cause health problems.
  12. you might try bouncing a large hmi into a weather balloon. you can buy a weather ballon for less than $50 online. :D
  13. yes you can make it yourself. Igus sells the linear bearing and plate that make up the whole slider unit except stops and feet. Buy the length you want in the double tube linear bearing and the size bearing traveler. If you want call them up and they can help you, very friendly people over there. the hardest part is making the mount for the head. I recommend just buying a head to leave on it. Drill a couple holes and tap a couple holes. and viola'. anyone can do it.
  14. A pancake (1/8 apple box) with a baby plate screwed onto it off set to one side. used to attach lights or flags where even lower to the ground is needed than a premie. sort of a High hat for a light.
  15. Basically these are the same thing. Same manufacturer of the basic components. The Bearings are stiffer than a true slider. You have to work at the push. The bearing races are very delicate. Buy a case along with it. The Indieslider has better accesories, but having been a part of an engineering team making this same dolly ( different company). The higher your push point the more a tendancy to have a momentary jam. Looking at the two I would recommend the indieslider. If you want to make one yourself, Check out the IGUS Drylin W linear slide system. I highly recommend you check this out before you buy one.
  16. can you PM me I have a bunch if you pay to ship,
  17. Ahh more crap from china. to answer your question yes and no. Is the box itself ok to use with a 650. yes. conditionally. 1 it must be mounted correctly. 2. it shouldnt be left on for days at a time. 3 avoid allowing the fabric to touch the light or fall into the light path. will it fit an arri 650, no the speed ring will not fit an arri 650 properly and safely. can you make it fit, probably but refer to mounting it correctly as a safety concern. you could have a speed ring made for it. but after the cost of milling and fabrication it would cost more than a Photoflex/ Chimera. Save money and spend some on the real gear. Stop buying Chinese because its cheaper. It Costs more in the long run in more than one way.
  18. yes, I have used sodium and mercury vapor lights are both practicals and as fixtures. we used a china ball plugged into a home depot mercury fixture with a pig nose adapter. you could build your own lights. It was used mostly in locations that had mercury vapor already.
  19. rosco makes a gel version of the kook for 4x4 frames that roll up. Also on the cheap side heat shield and a can of black spray paint does wonders.
  20. There is a lot of good advice here. two things I feel the need to add. 1. This came from my wife so you know its good. when you have died and buried no one will write on your tomestone "he worked really hard and shot a lot of good stuff". The people around you who know and CARE about you will remember but when they are gone nothing but the dash between dates will signify your work and the sweat you put into it. 2. Sometimes it takes a leap of faith. Money follows love. If you love something and love doing something, it will show and money will follow. there is always a way to support you and what you love doing. It is through practicing the art that love for what you do is revealed. I love gripping It is really all I want to do. I have had bad experiences and good ones. In the end it was the love of what I do that was my joy. Do what you love, do it with love, people will see your love shine in the product you have. good luck
  21. Norms studio equipment used to have a photo of Gary Coleman and a Gary Coleman, I used to have a copy of it in my truck. I understand that he is actually proud of the term.
  22. dan , You should tell the Dp to get his head out of the gutter. The Beaver board term refers to mounting the baby pin to one end of the pancake, so when held by the pin it resembles a beavers tail. next time call for a director's seat ( same as a beaver board).
  23. Phil. What do you feel like is the solution to your problem? I understand your feeling of powerlessness. I too have been put in those situations. I have had to play the bad guy for production and call them at their BS. It is hard. We all have. I joined the union to have something of a baseline code of conduct for production. I still work non-union on occasion. More this year than the last few. I think what happened to your friend is BS and that the producer should be slapped. Producers like them get work because they undercut the competition. They then transfer those "savings" on to you and your friend. I understand that if you didnt take the job someone else would have and that it is all the work available. So I give you two options. 1. Compete against them as a producer. you know who and what has to happen on set. you know equipment owners and operators. you know what they make and should be able to calculate a budget based off that information. Undercut the bad producers, but pay your friends a decent rate. It would me you not taking the lions share. Go for it. what do you have to lose. 2. Dont put up with their BS. Be Very explicit when making your deals and be very explicit as to the consequences of contrary actions. Charge overtime, Charge transportation costs. Will you work less, maybe, but will you have to risk getting burned? No. Take a leap of faith and step up. BS producers are like playing with fire. eventually you will get burned. you dont have to stoop to their level. Be Better than that.
  24. Tim, You might try that Magic Chrome Brush you can find at Auto part stores, my Dad swears by it with his British Cars.
