  1. Just because someone else did something doesn't make it right for you to do too. Criticizing something without actually having knowledge about what you're criticizing is just silly. Obviously you agree, so why did you do it anyway?
  2. This is the first I've heard of this. Can you tell me where you heard or saw him say that? I'd be interested in taking a look.
  3. I must be out of the loop. All the professional productions I've been on chose film. I've worked on two HD features this year, and I start another one tommorrow. Most of these are low budget features and they THINK they're saving money by shooting HD. Also, many of them don't have their budget for post secured when they start shooting and don't realize that it will cost them more in the long run if they end up making a print. So I do think that professionals productions choose HD solely to save money. Whether they're actually saving money is a whole other issue. Personally, I don't mind it that much. Although the cameras are heavier and they're a pain in the ass for steadicam. It seems that those problems are being addressed with the newer designs though.
  4. I actually tried this. While I ran into many sites that claimed things like "Moore is lying" when one fact checks their statements, they fall flat in many cases. That is true of many cases, not just Moore's detractors. Frankly, the level of fact checking in this country is at an all time low. It now seems as if because a radio entertainer says it is so, it must be so. Good point. I also went to some of the anti-Moore sites that my anti-Moore friend directed me to, and I found that many of them are exagerrating in exactly the way they claim Moore is, except in the other direction. They were all so hypocritical that it was very hard for me to take them seriously, even though if they had made good points and proved that Moore was wrong or lying, I would have been very receptive.
  5. I had a friend that operated on the pilot and I think I remember him saying it was Beta SP, but I had that conversation over a year ago and my memory could be failing me. If I speak to him soon I'll ask.
  6. Oh good, you're against tanks and R.P.G.'s! You really are against gun control! As long as the tanks are off the streets I won't worry about the Mac 9's and Uzi's floating around! And what's your point about death's in car accidents? People die from all sorts of things...they get struck by lighting, they fall out of window's, they have heart attacks, cancer...... What does this have to do with guns or violence? What kind of logic are you using if you're comparing people that die because they were shot to death and people that die because they crashed their car?
  7. The job will get back to normal quicker than you think. I had a crew member friend of mine almost die on a job (not job related....he had a brain tumor and cancer) and the job continued as normal the next day. I didn't feel normal as I was the one with him when he went into his seizure, but it was good to be around supportive people in that tough time who knew what I was going through and could talk to me about it. I think it was better to be on set than anywhere else at the time. I've heard of a few instances from friends where someone actually died on set. It happened on The Truman Show. One of the electricians had a brain anuerism (sp?) and dropped dead right there. I believe they took a day off and then the producers and Jim Carrey spoke to the crew as a whole and offered support and sympathy to anyone that was close to him. They even promised to add a "rememberance" section in the credit's for him, but I don't think that ever happened. I think in the end, people die, and we can't just stop what's going on because of it.
  8. Tony, I'll agree with you on your buckets point! I disagree though about there being no justification for any member of the public to own a gun. I went to college in southwest Virginia, which is a very rural part of the country. I met many people up there who hunt for food. I'm not talking about hunting for food just for kicks (although there are plenty of those as well), but people that are so poor that they HAVE to hunt for food. It's either that or beg for money. I even had a friend that was from that area that would hunt deer to give to underpriveled families. I know this is a rare exception to why most people own guns, but this is the case in some circumstances. I also have enjoyed skeet shooting in the past and think people should have the right to shoot skeet and targets. Of course assault rifles and the like are a totally different issue. They have no use in either hunting or target shooting and should be banned. Thinking about this issue more just now I realized something: The people on both sides of this issue are generally not the problem. The people that are the problem wouldn't argue it either way. They don't care. They're not informed enough to care. They leave their guns laying around the house where their kids can get to them and don't bother to teach the kid anything about the gun. How could we expect them to care what the laws are when they wouldn't follow them anyway? Sad, but true.
  9. Check out west side rentals. It's a good place for you to start so that you can get a good idea of what places cost out here.
  10. To address your first point: I agree. It is insanse how many unsafe and ignorant people there are buying guns. So why is it you oppose any gun laws being made? It seems like you'd want to implement some kind of control over the sale of guns so that the "unsafe and ignorant" people couldn't buy a gun so easily. On your second point: Could you please point me to where you got the statistics that say, "in the US, more children die from drowning in buckets of water, than die by gun deaths." I would really like to see these numbers. Thanks.
  11. Just look at Brad & Tony's posts above to see what I'm talking about. Now wait a minute. You reference my post to point out that I'm one of the "anti-gun people"? You must not have read my post. I'm "anti-death of innocent human beings", not necessarily anti-gun. In my opinion, if you're going to be completely anti-gun then you have to be anti-knife and anti-anything else that could possibly kill or hurt someone. That's not me, and if you think it is then you are mistaken. I think we should look at the REAL cause/causes of why there is so much violence in this country, whether it be perpetrated with a gun or a knife or fists or whatever...... If you want to lump all of the people that feel the same way I do into some "anti-gun" group in your own mind then that's your problem. You're only ignoring the real problem. As far as the rest of your rant about abortion.....it doesn't belong in this discussion. It's a much different isssue, and one that can't be compared to gun violence.
  12. Maybe this is a silly question, but.....what good is a 50mm lens from a sattelite in space? I guess it's for wide shots? Am I missing something? I'd figure you want a much longer lens to take spy shots from a sattelite.
  13. David, Good news! They say the toughest shoots end up being the best movies! I'm sure you've heard that one before. Hopefully things go better for you this week!
  14. Matt, I understand your argument, but it really has no place in a debate about Michael Moore. His point is that gun violence in this country is way out of hand. I don't think he's ever said we need to get rid of all the guns in this country, or make it illegal to own a gun. As a matter of fact, in Bowling for Columbine he compares us to Canada (which has a very high number of gun owners) and asks the question, "why does the U.S. have so much more gun violence than Canada". He doesn't have a definitive answer to this question (and he certainly didn't say that all guns should be banned), he's asking it to get people thinking, and hopefully to change things. I don't know why so many people are threatened by this. More and more I find that most of the "anti-Moore" people have never seen any of his films and that's why their arguments against him are so off kilter. Have you seen Bowling for Columbine Matt? Or any of his other films?
  15. Now THAT I would have managed to figure out on my own!
  16. Oh, we do? Thanks for clearing up for us what OUR assumptions are. It's always good to get the facts about what Americans are thinking from a Brit. Your opinion on these matters is always welcomed and appreciated!
  17. No worries. I just wasn't familiar with the term. Nothing to be sorry about. Am I correct in assuming it's a british term?
  18. Thanks for clearing that up Kevin. I knew it was three different formats, but I guess my memory failed me.
  19. What's a "hired" DVD? I've never heard this term before.
  20. Check out this site: http://www.filmiami.org/ I'm sure they can help you. Mitch's suggestions are good too. I used to know some of the folks at Cine Video Tech, and I'm sure they'll help you, or give you some good references to people who can if they don't have the package you need. Good luck.
  21. I believe it was shot with the Viper, 35mm, and super 16mm. I know it was a mix of a few formats.
  22. Honestly, I'm not sure. I don't think so, because he's still trying to get a visa and the government is well aware that he is here. I think the only reason he can legally work is because he has a corporation that he pays himself thorough. I don't know all the details, but I know it's been very tough for him.
  23. I have a steadicam operator friend who's been here for about 5 years (and working the whole time) and can't get a visa. He works, and is paid, through a corporation, but he still can't get a visa. He can't get in the union either because of this situation, even though he's more than qualified. I'm not sure he'll ever get his visa..... It's very tough for citizens to get work right now, so I wouldn't really recommend coming here to try to get MORE work. Of course, that could vary greatly depending on how in demand you are....
  24. Wouldn't you only really need one mag? Couldn't you just dump it every night and start fresh the next day? Although, I guess it would be good to have a backup mag.
  25. We don't hate HD. We hate people who blab on about it and are full of crap. As far as ridiculous comments go.....look in the mirror.
