  1. Good soundtrack that film But yeh, is anyone actually going to answer Keiths question?
  2. Hey you might be correct, but ... ;)
  3. The sun is about as natural and easily accessed 'spatial' step function that you can find that'll give you a quick analysis of your lens... What you see is effectively a plot of the lens characteristic. The hard part is unfortunately being able to interpret it - but there are some tricks as David points out - i.e. being able to count the iris blades.
  4. much more interesting :) Hey, are you aware of: http://homebuiltstabilizers.com/hbsboard/index.php ?
  5. Agree with Freya on this one. Fake dust and focus masks - Unfortunately it's the sign of a beginner for many (get that stuff out of your system, or alternatively shoot real film with lens-baby/old lens and hand-process it) I'm not sure where the 'long-walking shots' are either - the video cuts before anything long enough to be considered painful - and... fraid to say it, but it isn't that steady. Best you were made aware of this.
  6. Practical answers will no doubt follow - instead I'll ask you something that'll hopefully get you thinking about the ways you can figure this all out for yourself >> How do you, and from where exactly do you define 'all the light' ? ;)
  7. I keep all my small often used tools in a climbers chalk bag, allen keys go 'head' in - never had issues with the loose type falling out that way, even when I'm pulling them out, hanging 20m over people below. Still... HARDHATS gents!
  8. Agree! I find they flap around so pretty much the one you want is not where it should be and two you don't are...
  9. ooh boy... ok, constructive hat on: Cinefex magazine - a subscription would serve you well.
  10. Mental experiment>> put yourself in the position of an actor you've lit - look around and see with your own eyes what light is falling on you - and not just from sources but the total integration of reflections of the whole scene. Now place yourself X distance from this point towards the camera, look around again - is the light the same, or is it perhaps attenuated by the lamp fixtures or set, etc... Off the top of my head only the sun as a source or for small X can lead to a equivalent lighting (or scenes equating to the same) - this is of course within the constraints of an range/error that you decide, and I guess your question could be interpreted as asking 'what is a good range/error'... Well, thats up to whoever you ask (!) - simple solution as has been suggested, use a spot meter (and try not to think to hard about the angle you hold the card  ) ...or just place the incident meter right in your talents face. Tape it on
  11. ...that without being underhand (shooting film and claiming it was digital) you cannot choose to spend those extra dollars if you want. just, because ... well, because you just want to shoot on 16mm - the (valid) point you make is besides the point in that regard.
  12. There are some with a simple passion for exactly what they are doing (DoP, gaffer, 1st AD, driver, whatever...) and nothing else really gets them going ... Often its the very same passion that got them involved in the good jobs.
  13. yes, thats the one - small scale data changing 'too much' over areas of constant tone fooling the algorithm into thinking it was detail. Of course some might say that grain is detail...
  14. go figure ^_^ I've noted that people in many positions of both film and theatre direct on the side - at least in their heads - when at work... "Oh, I would have handled that differently" (The trick is to keep ones mouth shut and keep an eye on your own bag) Do you find yourself doing that? (no shame in saying so, I do it myself)
  15. Didn't I read it was something to do with grain causing HD compression schemes to fail? If that is the case what are the arguments around that? Not against film at all - just wondering ...
  16. Ok. wow Sheesh... What you've done just now is pretty much "shitting your pants on the side of the road" My advice is don't go until you've had some time to acclimate to yourself. I re-read my last post, I see perhaps I was a bit snippy - and of course there is the lack of replies that follow (mind that you played a part in that) - and then yes, emotions can be charged when it comes to committing oneself to a cause that runs against the flow - so yeh, maybe an outburst could be predicted... Aint no problem, regrettably it's typical - the important step now is to move on into action - your motivation has to come solely from within so no lack of support from your peers can stop you. Once you can do that I think you'll find the support gravitates towards you anyway.
  17. jeesh, Walk in the room - 'hey, everyone .. (!) woah, step quietly back out...
  18. You can push a pixel to 11111111... in post too.
  19. Bondhus for sure as you have the ball nose option for awkward places and also the option for using the extended end. aaaaand: also buy a second set to cut off the ends for a nice short nose set (for really awkward stupidly built in bolts that you may come across) ... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand: then use the cut-offs to put into your battery drill. ^_^ Keep in mind I'm using them for mechanical set effects/motion control - maybe your day to day AC jobs only need a flip set (that you can loose all at once if you try hard enough) - bondhus make them too. Only a full set of ball nose T-wrenches would have me envious - nicer on the hands:
