  1. I find that some times certain "HD" movies that play on HD movie channels are just uprezzed SD versions. Hopefully an HD transfer exists for this.
  2. Personally some things never look quite as good if added in post. I can't put my finger on it, but certain effects and choices seem more organic if they're done live. They became part of the fabric of the visuals, as opposed to an effect. I have nothing against the idea of doing things in post though, so long as it's not a lazy "we'll figure it out later" type impulse. I find if I add things in post, it usually takes a lot of work to get it to feel organic, and isn't an easy thing at all, which always makes me wish i'd thought of it on set and figured it out then. It would've been easier and would've looked better. There are exceptions of course I'm sure.
  3. Yeah, you should put up an akira blog or site or something maybe. Is it still on track for 2009? Because it seems fast.
  4. Is there a trailer for this anywhere online? Haven't been able to locate it, but been curious about the film for a while.
  5. Is this article available online anywhere? Sounds interesting... I could swear I've seen another animated film or short with anamorphic characteristics. Hmm... might be imagining it.
  6. I couldn't get over how great the anamorphic scope look was in Wall-E. Are there any other animated films that emulate anamorphic photography?
  7. Sometimes preferring digital is less about resolution and such, and more about convenience and freeing your creative impulses. Everyone's process is different, but for those that do better work the faster they move, digital is something that is freeing in some ways. And for others, maybe it hinders their process... It's all relative in the end. As I said before, it really all ends with how good the film is IMHO.
  8. David Fincher, Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Soderberg, and Ridley Scott usually have something interesting to say about their filmmaking process on their commentaries. For lower-budget stuff... Anything by Robert Rodriguez. There's many others, but i'm having a brain-freeze.
  9. Just for the record here, no such expectation was implied or expressed. Unless you consider someone offering a different POV to yours an expectation to bury your head in the sand. I'd like you quote me where I may have implied the final word of god.
  10. I wholeheartedly second that. Also, watch as many movies that you can back to back. 2-3 a day if you can. Take a vacation if you have to. But spend a couple of weeks doing nothing but watching movies/commentaries. You'll be surprised by how quickly you'll pick up the language and the skills if you immerse yourself like that.
  11. Right. So what's your point? That the film is bad because oscar nominations don't always hold merit? Because my point is that just because you say it's a bad movie, doesn't exactly make it officially so. As long as there's people who think othwerwise. So the film is probably great in some circles, and not so great in others. I believe its called "sensibilities." Having said that -- I think you're wrong. :P
  12. The movie looks amazing. That's really all that matters at the end of the day.
  13. Stop looking for actual humor in a comedy Ruairi. You're so old fashioned.
  14. 7 Oscar Nominations would beg to differ. As would I, and many critics. But opinions rock... I guess.
  15. Thanks guys. It's clocking in at about 9mins including credits right now... more or less.
  16. Thanks man. Haha while the films note "quite" of that caliber -- this may be the nicest compliment he could receive, since he's a huge Brando fanatic. We're working on getting it out there... hopefully I can share it soon.
  17. Nice job overall. I like the photography, and the upside down shots are cool. The compression isn't too nice though. You should upload a higher quality version to vimeo. Again, well done.
  18. I agree with what Jason says here. The shallow vs. Deep focus thing should really just be a personal choice by the filmmakers. There's no standard answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. There have been great films on both sides of this issue -- Which really ends the debate. I personally love shallow focus and longer lenses, but have shot otherwise as well. And you should base your decision on what you respond to more, not what everyone else considers better. You probably have a preference. There's no right or wrong answer here.
  19. Here are some images from a short film I just shot on the hv20. Watch the teaser clip in HD here: http://www.vimeo.com/1053128 Working on the score at the moment, and should hopefully have it all wrapped up within a week or so.
  20. I remember reading an interview in which either Anderson or Elwitt said that some of the flares were created in post and timed for emotional effect at key moments. I can't seem to find the original article though -- maybe someone else remembers. I'll post it here if I manage to find it.
