  1. did I mention something about not wasting your time Bill.. Ive been through all this with Tyler regards Sony camera,s and codec,, same stuff.. on NLE can edit XDCAM files etc.. XAVC is from Mars and totally useless.. F65 is crap as it cant handle highlights .. its a losing hand.. fold and move to another table ..
  2. JD.. wow ! whats got you so angry.. sorry if i have misread your post.. just talking about a book light.. not world politics.. deep breaths and some hot chocolate .. its not that important man.. sorry if I have offended you ..
  3. Will .. as above .. "booklight can make light softer by using a soft bounce to double diff the light" This is tripping you up sir "Basically the booklight, while cutting intensity, enables you to fill the frame more and evenly, so that though you have to move it closer, it becomes softer because of size." Any frame or light source will become softer by moving it closer to the subject.. book light in a tight space is just helping to "fill" the diff frame and avoid hot spots if you cant get your lamp back far enough.. but you can also bounce a light in that situation to same effect.. Im guessing they have a studio at your school.. its very easy to set up a frame/light and move it back/forth from the subject .. or use small and bigger frames.. a 10 K through a big frame far away from your subject will be a hard light.. A classic example is the sun.. thats a very very big source .. but its a long way away .. so its anything but soft on a clear day.. but a cloudy day is providing a massive diffusion frame .. very close to us.. so the light can be very soft .. JD.. putting a light through fabric can very much be used to diffuse light .. many of the greats have been doing this for years .. dying the fabric to their own custom likes..
  4. JD... mm not sure what your problem is .. Im not here to argue .. we seem to be talking in circles saying the same thing .. thats what Im saying .. a book light is NOT making the light softer .. agree totally ..reduction of intensity is NOT making the light softer .. but a box light,by having that added bounce internally is cutting the intensity.. but NOT making the light softer.. that can only be done by increasing the size of the source to the subject .. I think we are saying the same thing ? Im just wondering why they are such the rage.. as apart from tight spaces.. they dont make the light softer just by being bounced into a frame.. compared to filling the frame directly by a lamp.. the frame size is still the same.. Peace and love.. have a cup of tea or something :)
  5. JD you need to read my post again.. I said when space is not an issue.. and yes agree with your second statement .. that was my point really.. apart from saving space... a book light is only taking down the intensity of the light,by bouncing it internally .. into another scrim/diffusion frame.. instead of directly..
  6. you were serious about the fresh meat sign.. !!! no come on .. in the words of John McEnroe .. you cant be serious.. ! Would maybe work in a comedy .. but in a video clip about 2 people dying in a car crash.. are you sure that would be a good idea ..??
  7. Yes I was being sarcastic as Im sure JD was .. :).. Not sure if you had them.. but battery op LED lights.. Lite panels etc are a "cheap " and easy way to get a bit of an eye light or something.. although they wont do a lot if you have a lot of ambient light around.. unless your in on a close up of course..
  8. well not really.. a big HMI.. that was giving that same effect of the burnt out sun outside .. would need a generator to power it.. and big heavy stand.. crew member to be with it.. that would be the same price as 2 lite panels .. ?.. But yes as far as critique goes.. I would have to agree my comments arnt really helping the OP in any way.. cant argue that.. I do agree re the fresh meat sign.. this would have provided a subtle and thought provoking insight ... have you ever thought of directing .. :)
  9. Yes I can see that ... people have their own ways..nothing wrong with that.. but to set up,construct a book light .. is actually making a lot more work for the same quality of light.. I guess its knocking down the intensity.. but there are easier ways of doing that.. Maybe its a set up all the gear so the producer/client can see the money thing..
  10. I was basing it on what the op said.. i.e. running into the super market during the slow time.. and not disturbing any customers.. says low budget to me.. as does 5D.. and would mean no cables or lights Im pretty sure .. Its pretty obviously low budget and the OP openly implies so too Yes I would stand by that back light sun looking better than a couple of work lights.. . .. tungsten with all that day/florrie light ambient isnt going to do much .. and gelled even less.. Its not a big deal.. I just think under the circumstances it was not bad.. and the best thing to do.. of course not ideal ..but best for that situation .. and he was the one there.. so second guessing about using different aisles etc is a bit pointless.. as we already heard .. the fresh meat sign.. and i wouldn't agree re the work light idea for that shot.. just my own opinion of course.. my only advise would be to rent a couple of battery operated lite panels or similar.. although they might not be allowed to be set up either..
  11. You think thats going to look better than the sun.. that back light burnt out look has got to be way better than a couple of dodgy work lights with Colour Balance all over the place.. and cables /diff frames needed .. given the conditions.. it was the best thing to do in my opinion .. I think most DP,s would have gone with that TBH.. you just want to get your lights out of the van :)
  12. why have book lights become the rage.. they seem to be used even when space isnt a problem.. source size to subject is 101 lighting.. every DP would know this.. so is there more to it ?
  13. Sorry maybe really obvious .. Ronin /Movi gets very heavy quickly being held out in front of you.. a lot of people are now using them in conjunction with an easyrig.. who now make an extended arm for the use.. might help your operator if you have long takes..
  14. I think JD,s talk of HMI,s .. and possibly Bills comments about flatness on the ext shots.. is down to them not realizing it was a very low budget shoot with a Canon 5D..without HMI,s to blast in a bit of Hollywood..
  15. I think the back light was the right choice in the super market.. if you have no lights, might as well go for the back light from the sun.. shoot the other way down the aisle .. its just flat and boring.. actually lucky the sun was shining that direction if anything.. Also dont think you have to follow any "rules" about editing wide to close.. esp in music video,s .. the worlds best directors are doing this all the time..
  16. haha ! .. your really into the old camera,s .. is that an Arri 2c in your profile pic
  17. Kiev 16Y.. 1966-72 100ft reel 3 lens turret .. looks in good condition.. could be worth a bit to someone who collects them..
  18. Wales ... Nov/Dec.. magic hour.. I wouldn't bet the farm on that ! you,ll be lucky to see any sun .. :).. you,ll have pretty short day light hours..
  19. Though the word ‘bit’ is also used in this term, Bit Depth actually describes something completely different from Mbps.. Bit Depth, aka Color Depth, describes the amount of information stored in each pixel of data. As you increase bit depth, you also increase the number of colors that can be represented. In the case of an 8-bit RGB image, each pixel has 8-bits of data per color (RGB), so for each color channel the pixel has 28 = 256 possible variations. In the case of a 10-bit RGB image, each color channel would have 210 = 1024 variations. - So in 8 bit you have 256 X 256 X 256 = 16.8 M approx colour variations 10 bit 1024 X 1024 X 1024 = 1 billion approx colour variations
  20. I believe thats "bit depth" .. i.e. giving you more variations/shades of each of the colour channels.. RGB.. the other would be Mbps.. e.g... 50 Mbps is the minimum for HD broadcast in most countries.. going up into the hundreds .. the amount of data recorded per second .. as Perry says.. 10 and 12 are pretty high.. 8 bit is to be avoided for LOG .. as it will fall apart in any grade... which is the whole point of shooting log in the first place.. e.g. 8 bit will give you total 16.8 millions colors.. 10 bit 1 billion !
  21. Its not just words.. some things can be proven.. right or wrong.. full stop.. and you put out so much empirically wrong information in a lot of your posts.. from codec acceptance ,to battery mounts.. to not understanding ISO .. or basically cine camera,s.. except for the BM pocket cam.. this is not really a high end camera Im afraid .. this is the problem.. and what pisses people off.. no one has problems your own opinions , which you have of course the perfect right to express.. empty vessels seem to make the most noise .. Your last line is a classic example.. you really dont know what your talking about mate..
