Hi, In the early 1980's that might have been true but for about 18 years neg has been the way to go. A print has a far smaller dynamic range than a print. With Power windows over 10 stops of dynamic range can end up on tape. Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com

Sorry but you can Telecine neg Hi, In 1987, when SVC television installed the first DaVinci on a Rank Mark 3 in london. They demonstrated how much better neg was than print. Since then neg transfers have become very standard. I knew a film lab with an FDL 90 who used to tell everybody that it was better to go from print. The same lab was making archive copies from an FDL 60 recording composite video onto DigiBeta 10 years ago! LOL Stephen Williams DOP (Ex Telecine op) www.stephenw.com

Hi, You can download After Effects demo free for 28 days, should do the trick! Ask your telecine operator because if they could do it in TK Live then it would be much better quality than stabilizing later. The image always gets softer when done later in post. Stephen.

Hi, I know there is a Super 8 gate for a Spirit that could give you HD or 2k data if you really needed it but IMHO HDCAM SR is fine for Super 8 originated material. What do you want to do? Output to 35mm? I don't know where your based but www.onlinevideo.ch in Zurich could do that. I know they offer very good Super 8 rates on their Spirit. Stephen

Bazelli's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith"
Stephen Williams replied to Mike Williamson's topic in Cinematographers
Hi, I saw that film and was sure that the Cooke S4's were used! they are so distinctive. Geoff Boyle often uses his rebuilt Cooke Speed Pancros for close ups too! I guess the lenses were over 30 years Old. Cooke put their efforts into Zoom lenses in the 70's & 80's. I have a 1999 price list from Van Diemen who rebuilt Cooke S2/3 lenses. They were charging £2600 -£4340 per Lens, I am sure modern coatings were applied. Same sort of prices as Zeiss Superspeeds! Stephen Williams DoP Zurich www.stephenw.com -

Hi, 35mm Arri PL mounted lenses should work OK. Sometimes the barrels are too wide and may hit the viewfinder. When fitting a lens always make sure the rear element does not hit the shutter! A very expensive mistake! Stephen

Shooting through the base
Stephen Williams replied to Matthew Pebler's topic in Film Stocks & Processing
Hi, Out of interest what film did you use? What were the printing lights? how much did you overexpose by? Any Chance of seeing a frame? Many thanks Stephen -
Hi, Many film cameras will run backwards. In the past with a Mitchell I alwasy used to just run the film from the take up side to the feed side. However the Keycode will be wrong (and possibly the take up motors going the wrong way) .So you have to run the film forwards first with a lens cap on, then run the camera backwards! DOLLIE FOCUS
Stephen Williams replied to jijhh's topic in Students, New Filmmakers, Film Schools and Programs
Hi, I have just looked at my Samcine disc. Any Lens Upto about 70mm focused at 13 feet @ T22 will be in focus from 10 to 20 feet so a split would work fine with a 25 or 35mm lens Cheers Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com -

Zeiss Planars & Som Berthiot Pan - Cinor
Stephen Williams replied to chooser's topic in Cinematographers
Hi, The Planar was designed in 1896, and solved the problem of spherical aberration and astigmatism, by employing a symmetrical optical configuration. The Latestt Master Primes use Planer design in the 50mm & 65 mm lenses. The Zeiss / Cooke question is a personal one depending on the look you are after! DOLLIE FOCUS

Hi At f 22 you dont have to be that accurate with focus pulling. As for a cheap device how about fingers touching the focus ring? Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com -
Projection 1:85 Image from Digibeta Tape
Stephen Williams replied to indogold's topic in Post Production
Julius, I think all SD projectors are switchable (Phil ?). I was looking at an electronics store last weekend and even the very cheap ones could be switched! I saw the screening today from Digibeta 16x9 FHA, whilst nothing like as good as film it looked like a big LCD quality wise. Stephen -
Hi, I think the new Kodak 5212/7212 is beautiful. Every time I use faster film I usually end up adding ND filters. Stephen
