  1. Hi, It depends if they have a noise reducer and know how to use it! I think a Spirit is noisy in the blue channel without any noise reducer but many times its set too high. I like to view the film without any noise reducer first, and if necessary dial some in when using faster stocks. Stephen Williams Lighting Cameraman www.stephenw.com
  2. Hi, A one man film shoot will look better than a one man video shoot.
  3. Hi, We are talking about a Cine Alta camera! The Panavision default is off as no extra detail is required as the lenses are so sharp. But for a video camera with a cheap zoom lens, well thats another story. Stephen
  4. Hi Walter, Welcome to the lists, I am sure you will have some great input! Stephen Williams DoP Zurich www.stephenw.com
  5. Hi, However too much detail will make everything look sharper. If you have good lenses you should be able to turn off the detail! Stephen
  6. Hi, Super 8 IS the way to go to learn about film making. Stephen
  7. Hi, I have used DuArt and was very happy. Tell them if you hate grain and want the noise reducer turned up. I think there default settings are very low or off! Stephen
  8. Dan, I totally agree Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com
  9. Hi, Why do you say 16mm is easier to work with than 35? Stephen
  10. Hi, I think that sums it up. At a T2 or wider, newer lenses such as Cooke S4's (T2), UltraPrimes(T1.9) or Master Primes (T1.3) are a far better bet! Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com
  11. Hi, Man on Fire used an Arri 2, I assume from PV as the other cameras were PV.. Steve Morton in Australia has built one. I found him on google. Stephen
  12. Hi, You need a very good focus puller. If you could use a new Master Prime lens, it will be very sharp with good focus markings. I have a set of Zeiss superspeeds, They are OK wide open but the focus marks are not so well spaced. The Cooke S4's only go to T2 but are fantastic wide open. Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com
  13. Daniel, 1 doller 20 cents buys 1 Euro. The Euro at the moment is worth more that the doller Stephen
  14. Hi, I own both a Cooke 20-60 and Cooke 20-100. Optically very similar but the 20-60 is much lighter. Both are T3.1, very good wide open but I usually light for a T4. The color is slightly warmer than the ultra-speeds. If you are grading in a telecine they will match nicely. Its worth doing a film test with a couple of sets of lenses. 15. Hi, I assume your talking about the old f3.2 T3.9 lens. This lens is not very good. (I own One). Its usable from 5.6-8. However the Cooke zooms from the 70's are far better. Unless your after the look of an old 1960's zoom I wouldn't bother. They sell for about $250 dollers on E-bay. Sometimes they are listed at $500 but don't sell! Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com
  16. Hi, Eating breakfast Manhatten Hotel was $27 before a tip each! Stephen
  17. Hi, Your cheapest option would be a Day for Night shoot! Stephen Williams lighting Cameraman www.stephenw.com
  18. Hi, They won't learn anything about exposure control, so IMHO it would be a waste of time, film & money. BTW I started at 8 years old playing with a manuel standard 8 camera and a light meter. Stephen
  19. Hi, I exposed correctly the printer lights were spot on. Had I overexposed 1 stop my printer lights would have been high! Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com

  21. Hi, If you set the FX1 to record in SD then you will be able to use your old camera to play the tapes. If you record in HDV then you will have to use the camera as the play Deck. You can only edit HDV if you have the latest version Premiere Pro with the necessary codec. Any drop outs on the tape will be long glitches! Stephen Williams Lighting Cameraman www.stephenw.com
  22. Hi, I have done long exposure motion control shoots, 8 seconds per frame without any obvious problem, mabe because the camera was moving! Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com
  23. Hi, I was shooting 7 days a week when I was young. I was earning more than I do now some 20 years later! There is more to life than working! Stephen
  24. David, Is this transfered from a telecine? I always shoot a multipass steady test on the front of the first roll to show that the camera is steady. I shoot a great deal of multipass motion control. A number of times the TK house has said the material is not steady, now I can show when the TK is at fault! 25. Hi, Film-weave should not be an issue with any pin registered camera scanned with a pin registered film scanner. Telecine-weave is another matter! Stephen Williams Lighting Camerman www.stephenw.com
