  1. The viewfinder is critical - you won't be able to see an image without it. Do a search on ebay for "arriflex sr viewfinder." As you can see, it would be attached here:
  2. Yes, some were almost too obvious. It's funny you chose that shot because when I was watching it, I was paying more attention to the composition - how Peter's upper body fits seamlessly into the frame of the tree-trunk.
  3. Necessities that will push your budget up. So, realistically, you need to be ready to shell out four figures.
  4. I just took the 5600K shots (there appear to be two others from the same project at 2:19 & 2:53) to be a conscious decision which was likely considered most suitable for the given project - not a mistake. I know the muted look is "in" these days, but the shot at 2:22 (in the car) looks far too dim - as if you just didn't have enough light. I would take that - and possible a few others - out, simply because it's a little long. In my eyes, just under two minutes is ideal. That should be plenty of time for me to get a feel for your abilities. Also, you definitely need to change the music. It just doesn't fit with your imagery. But as Adam said, nice work overall.
  5. Well, then is timely. I was watching Nicholas Ray's King of Kings for the first time yesterday and saw that there was a plethora of diopter (and a few deep focus) shots. Having never used diopters myself, I was being to wonder how they worked. So thanks for the information, David!
  6. Do you want to shoot film or do you want to make a camera? By all means, if you're able to make those kinds of things, more power to you. You'll probably be able to do a decent amount of maintenance on it yourself. But considered this is going to be your first 16mm camera, I would just focus on the purchases of the camera, lenses & any other accessories you might need to pick up. You will have plenty of time to put together some hardware another time. Besides, if the part doesn't come out perfect, you will have spent time and money that could have gone into the purchase of a full camera package.
  7. Well, I just picked up a Super16 SR-II from eBay and it's in great shape (probably because it was previously owned by NFL Films). The entire package - 4 mags, battery belt, DC charger, Pelican case, etc. - cost me $1700. I believe there is another being sold on there right now for the same price. So if you can up your budget a bit, it might behoove you in the long-run.
  8. I agree with everyone else that you are not being very realistic with regard to budget. I have an Arriflex 16 S/B but even that camera is too loud for sound-shooting. Also, the one you listed for $499 appears to have a variable-speed motor which means that even if you initially set the motor to a certain speed, the camera will eventually drop to a different one, leading to a changed in exposure. This means it needs to be constantly watched & adjusted. So instead of watching the frame in the viewfinder, you wind up having to watch the tachometer. It can be dealt with, but it's something you shouldn't have to worry about. Plus, I wouldn't purchase any equipment off of ebay that's being advertised as "untested." As everyone else stated, you should be worrying about lenses. A good camera is important, but good glass is what will give you a nice image. Even on ebay, that will cost you a minimum of $500.
  9. Very nice. I liked the variety between people and landscapes. I would cut it down a bit and start the reel with a human face. I initially thought all I'd be seeing would be landscapes and, once you start putting your reel out there, you don't want someone of import to impatiently turn it off because of that. I'd also change the music to something instrumental. What cameras did you use?...
  10. Very good documentary-short recorded in 1966: Stanley Kubrick: The Lost Tapes
  11. I agree with Dom. I purchased a Cooke-Kinetal 9mm for my Arriflex S/B off of ebay and it was a great purchase. However, some of the very same lenses you have are on ebay right now. They range from $300 - $500, mostly using the "Buy It Now" selection. I think the more popular, PL-mounted lenses go for a bit higher. I would clean yours up as best as possible and take lots of pictures of each - make those pictures as attractive as possible. I would also be very detailed when writing your descriptions as many of us are wary of purchasing optics off of ebay. Of course, always be honest with your prospective buyers - if you think one lens needs to be serviced, mention it. This would of course lower the value of the lens, but you'd be surprised how many people there are out there who look for lenses to refurbish and sell/use, etc. I would start out selling them separately with low starting bids, as Dom suggested. If you don't get any bidders, try the same strategy with the whole set, but I would avoid the "Buy it Now" option. Good luck!
  12. Congrats, man! I'll watch The Irrelevant once I finally see The Revenant so I can truly appreciate it.
  13. And since he's just starting out, hopefully the good instincts he has will develop over time.
  14. Not true. That is often what a lot of people have to do. Also not true. That's a great trait in a director and you will eventually wind up with some great moments on film. But there is also a time and place for them. I just saw your Airglow Timelapse video - great work!
  15. Pretty nice. I'd have used more light on the lead singer, but I likied it. The camera movement wasn't overdone and the strobe issue was only glaringly obvious when it hit the drummer's body. I really liked the blast of light that came out from behind the tarp (or whatever that was.) I do agree with JD that the blocking in the initial dolly shot was a bit too much. Having one person move from camera-right to camera-left (or vice versa) in front of the camera to give the effect of the "club atmosphere" is fine. But it began to feel like the actors just didn't know their spots. You also want to see the stage, not silhouettes of people watching it (at least not in that shot.) But overall, I liked it.
