  1. Hey fellow cinematographers just thought I would share this with you all. This summer marks exactly the 1 year mark for me fully supporting myself as a cinematographer. I just finished my first montage reel with the help of my awesome friend and gaffer. One of the projects in it is two recent for me to unlock to the whole internet so there is a password on the video but I'll include it because I would love for you guys to check out the reel when you find a free minute. 2012 reel Password: reel Also I am new to following these forums. So if anyone is interested in my background I am 22 and studied at the school of the hard knocks. I learned while on set and from various mentors. Thanks for watching! Graham Robbins
  2. Alex, Cheers man you have some really solid stuff in there, I like your frame choices. Where did you go to school? Graham
  3. Gorgeous work my friend that motion control shot from that British movie you shot is great! I am working with Moco for the first time at the end of the month and that made me even more excited about it. Cheers, Graham
  4. Hey guys anyone work on the film, "The Strangers" ? I was curious what ASA they filmed at, and how they tweaked there color to get that dirty orange feel with all the exterior night stuff. I just shot a low budget horror feature digitally and got the same look with 640 ASA, and 5000k for my white balance. I am just curious if anyone knows specifics on the film. Thanks, Graham Robbins www.grahamrobbinsdp.com
  5. Im kind of in the same boat as you I am close to being eligible to join but I am still early 20's so all of the shows I work are non union. However I also have a friend who is in the union as an operator and even on non union shows he makes a lot more money. Being in the union seems to be like a calling card saying your worth some extra cash. Personally I am gonna hold off until I pick up like a decent TV show, or feature that is union. Or that I feel is going to flip. For me right now its not really about making a bigger day rate its just about having fun doing what I love. hope that helps, Graham Robbins www.grahamrobbinsdp.com
  6. Hey man good luck I Just recently wrapped a 50k feature film shot on a 7d. My advice don't stress yourself out to much it will show in your work. Take a deep breath and just get creative. Micro budget stuff can be really fun. because less equipment forces you to get creative with the available light and learn to make it work for you. My experience with the 7d and the dslr's is that less is more, so really make that practical lighting work for you. Also I will say that a feature film is a marathon not a sprint, so the key is to lock down your look for the film and stick to it. Remember to have fun thats huge I mean your shooting a movie whats not fun about that! Hope you knock it out of the park! Good luck, Graham Robbins www.grahamrobbinsdp.com
  7. Hey all, So I am still young but I have been working for 2 years now freelancing myself out as a cinematographer and getting some decent paid work. One of my best friends since we were kids is actually one of my go to operators for larger scale stuff. We have been talking about picking up a Steadicam package and using it as a second income, and a way to sub rent to the productions I am Dping to make more off them. However my problem is that for the kind of money we would be spending on a Steadicam, that can fly the cameras we use regularly like a loaded red one, I could buy my own red one package, which is very appealing to me seeing as I personally love the crisp image of the Red. (Also its good to note that I am a shooter and shooters like cameras...) So I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this, Should we invest in a nice Steadicam setup that will last us longer? or should we pick up a Red. Or is it dumb of us to even want to invest in gear. I like to be on top of technology and try new things my only concern is we will spend a ton of money and all the sudden what we have is out of style. Thanks guys, Graham Robbins www.grahamrobbinsdp.com
