  1. Better show his posts to a Cryptographer, maybe he can decipher them ;)
  2. Graeme Have you pointed the Red at a Zone Plate which is colored, rather than black and white? Say red and blue, or even different shades of the same color. That would impact the perceived sharpness, now wouldn't it? I have the feeling that measuring resolution off a chart is similar to judging lenses by how they look on a lens projector.
  3. 3.2K worth of Luma I can agree on, but you most certainly do not get 3.2K worth of Chroma from the Red. Which is where it differs from film and 3 chip cameras. Unfortunately in real life shooting situations we don't film black and white resolution charts, but colored objects.
  4. They took the coating off of existing lenses.
  5. The Zeiss Superspeeds got released during the 70s. The Cooke zooms (20-100 and 18-100) as well I think.
  6. If you're interested in more extreme flares, talk to Panavision, they have special 'flare' anamorphics.
  7. Which zooms was that, the 18-50mm or the 18-85mm? Did you see any other interesting lenses?

    35mm post

Congrats on the film and the article Jason. One can never have enough Westerns!

Your choice of words is very revealing for someone who professes impartiality ;) Why not talk about people who love their highlights to blow out gracefully or people who like a bit texture in the images? That comes closer to the truth than nostalgia.
  10. The human face is most readable when we see it at a 3/4 profile. Straight on it gets very flat.
  11. Pretty much any lens set that you rent comes with an 18mm. Except for Terry Gilliam no one is shooting close-us with it, but its a very useful lens when you are in tight rooms and need a wide shot. 25mm isn't going to get you there.
  12. I seem to recall an ad in AC about one of the existing big labs opening a branch in New York recently.
  13. Too bad the 18mm is only coming out later, that's a really useful lens and means that people will have to rent /buy one in the meantime.
  14. Good luck with it Richard. When the money comes pouring in don't forget us poor folks ;)

Unfortunately I don't shoot medium format film, only 35mm and you can have that processed on every corner in London it seems. My main argument is that yes in stills digital has taken over a larger share of the market, especially in the consumer/news part, but film is still very much around. There are plenty of professionals shooting on film, especially when it comes to say landscape photography where medium and large format film rules. These people can afford to stick with film and will continue to do so because they care more about quality/look than convenience/fast turn-around. It takes no great foresight to predict that in motion picture digital will also take a larger market share in the next years and decades, but to think that film will disappear completely is just plain wrong.

Funny how I have no trouble at all buying stills film and getting it developed and printed.
  18. You sound really sore Emanuel...
  19. Regular crew members don't have the authority to allow you to work on set. They would get into trouble if you broke something, got hurt, etc...
  20. I don't understand this whining about the camera being too expensive, with the weak dollar, 40K or 30K or whatever really isn't that much money if you have a good business model. Especially since it gives Red the opportunity to fix everything they got wrong the first time around. That should be worth a slight price increase.

From what I hear, Mr Alvarez is how he's really called...
  22. Is that 8x T2.8 lens fixed or will one be able to use different glass? T2.8 is really slow for 2/3" cameras, most modern zooms are T1.6 or so, that's nearly 2 stops faster.
  23. It's more likely a German production, that's the country the Rote Armee Fraktion is from. I don't recognize the film you've seen, but there are quite a few films on the subject. Fassbinder made one called Die Dritte Generation (The Third Generation) which bizarrely ends with the final shoot out not shown, but instead you can read the script pages... There is also a very good docu-drama called Das Todesspiel, but once again, that's not the film you've seen. According to the German Wikipedia page, these are films that deal with the RAF: 1978 ? Deutschland im Herbst (D) verschiedene Kurzfilme und -Reportagen von elf Regisseuren, Regie: Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Volker Schlöndorff, Alexander Kluge, Edgar Reitz u. a. 1979 ? Die dritte Generation (D) Groteske, Regie: Rainer Werner Fassbinder 1981 ? Die bleierne Zeit (D) Spielfilm, Regie: Margarethe von Trotta 1986 ? Stammheim (D) Doku-Drama, Regie: Reinhard Hauff, Drehbuch: Stefan Aust 1992 ? Der Herbst der Terroristen (D) Spiegel TV Doku, Regie: Stefan Aust 1997 ? Todesspiel (D) Doku-Drama, Regie: Heinrich Breloer 1997 ? Das Phantom (D) Polit-Thriller, Regie: Dennis Gansel 1997 ? Im Fadenkreuz ? Deutschland & die RAF (D) fünf Dokumentarfilme von verschiedenen Regisseuren 2000 ? Die innere Sicherheit (D) Spielfilm, Regie: Christian Petzold 2000 ? 24. Yeah well apparently our military bought an Airbus and the joke is that the whole army fits in there. I need two tanks for my next film, but I don't think they have any. Instead they do own half of a military vessel (the Belgians own the other half), despite the fact that Luxembourg does not even touch the sea... Now don't you dare laugh, or you will feel Luxembourg's military wrath!
  25. I think there is a definite advantage of scanning at 4K, even though you might not have 4K worth of picture information (actual image) on there, especially on the faster stocks, but at least the grain shows up sharper. That's so annoying about 2K DIs, they always have this smoothed out look compared to a photochemical finish.
