Conflating "story" or "storytelling" with filmmaking
JB Earl replied to Peter Bitic's topic in General Discussion
can you make a film without a story? -
Thanks for the links and ideas. Jose luis Villars work is beautiful, especially the Tri-X. The Logmar footage is stunning, almost too good, for Super8. I suppose the draw of the format is the painterly look, and the serendipitous nature of the shots. I'm not fond of footage that seems like the photographer could barely hold the camera up. Good point about the transfer and post. I do have a Super 8 projector now for watching old SciFi reels and the like.

Can anyone direct me to some good footage shot on super 8 or max8? Everything I can find is "shaky cam" at best, and often improperly exposed. I'm looking to see what the format is actually capable of.

Is this still available?

Do you think there is an overall trend to more western style? For example the Dhoom series

I saw the Heavy Water War last night. Actually binge watched 5 episodes. It's related to the Heroes of Telemark story, and is a Norwegian production. The language changes a lot so the subtitles are hard to deal with, and there's too much handheld camera for my taste. But a dmn good story and nicely done. -
You clearly succeeded. Seeing your stills and the trailer have made me smile every time. it's perfect

here's a another good BTS. I really want to see this movie

Anyone with HID Source Four experience?
JB Earl replied to Joseph Tejeda's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
I used these once on a commercial where the director wanted me to flick it on and off (like you would do with a hotlight) so he could see the effect. I don't imagine that would work even on a hot strikeable one, but it would still be useful- 5 replies

What is a banjo spreader like? -

High legs are just an old Bogen 350MV. Didn't even try that spreader because of the short double spike-saddle thingy versus the long single spike. I'll try it out tomorrow. Thank you for the ideas. -

JB Earl replied to JB Earl's topic in Camera Assistant / DIT & Gear
I'm afraid the rubber would just roll off the tab on the feet. There's not much to attach to on the tripod, without using a hook of some sort. The spikes are a full inch long also. Would you attach somehow to the wooden triangle, or just drop in place? -
I have a set of baby sticks in need of a spreader. Is anything available out there for sale, or that I can build? Or should I stick with some chain or a piece of carpet?

I've looked but cannot find the star shape catchlights photo I was referring to, anyway, Thanks all for your input on this
-
there's a music video I saw recently with a star shaped catchlight made up of (I presume) kino tubes. Can't remember which one
-
meaning each camera having it's own obie? I'm usually not fond of multiple catchlights unless they are different sizes, but it works well on this character.
-
I don't think that it's all hard-light, so it looks like deliberate placement of catchlights low in the eye which is a strange look. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into the character......
-
Does anyone see something interesting going on with the catchlights on Lucifer? I haven't been able to see anything consistent except that there are lots of them, but it still seems to be deliberate. Thoughts?

FWIW here's a quick color test with Coollights 5000K lamp in a S4 CDM par. I think they work pretty well together.- 5 replies

re: the X-Files I got a good laugh at the monster-turned-man's wardrobe- it appeared to be Kolchak's from "the Night Stalker" that series may have been the original "X Files" -
Thanks for posting this. I'm a fan of the Bollywood 'epic' musicals and I've not seen much discussion about them.

I will admit the early Dr Who had a certain charm. -

"River" (out of the UK) on Netflix has gotten my attention. And Dr Who has gotten very nice looking considering the humble beginnings. an aside for Mr Mullen Space 1999? great miniature work, especially for the era. Howabout UFO? -
Can I buy(purchase) old film stocks from Kodak?
JB Earl replied to Hrishikesh Jha's topic in General Discussion
you may be able to get newly manufactured film of an old type, 3M i think. Don't know if it'll be the look you want, but it probably won't look like Vision3. http://www.filmferrania.com
