  1. Dial Up Modem Handshake Sound Spectrogram : U2UBER : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive Don't know what I'd use it for, but looks pretty cool to experiment with.
  2. If you have an interest in the early film days of Ken Burns get a DVD copy of his 1984 film 'Shakers.' It has some good behind the scenes specials of Burns working with 16mm. I got a copy from the library.
  3. You know the kind of project. You kill two proverbial 2 birds with one stone. Sodbusters In Transition D.D.Teoli Jr. : D.D.Teoli Jr. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive I wanted to experiment with scenes transitions. I was going to do the transitions project with escort girl cards the illegal's hand out on the Vegas Strip. But I figured the I.A. may can my ass and think I'm advertising call girls. Then it hit me. I had 1100+ sodbuster photo's sitting for over a year that I could never get anything done with. I was planning to make a film on the sodbusters. But there were a few hundred more to look through and download and I ran out of steam. So boom...'Sodbusters in Transition' was conceived - 106 sodbusters and 105 different examples of scene transitions. I spent about 25 minutes picking out 105 sodbuster images. Then spent about 6 hours PP'ing them. I was short a handful of images after some got dropped, so had to spend a few more hours finding more photos and getting it all in ship shape. This is version #17. Anyway, the whole project was finished in 2-1/2 days including going through a few hundred wax cylinder and 78 recordings. In the end I just used all wax cylinders for the music. Now...getting back to those call girls. Order Women Like Pizza is the world record for how close you can shoot candid photography with a circular fisheye. The text on the photo is worth reading. Click on the photo to enlarge. It gives you the lowdown on the escort girl cards they hand out in Vegas. NSFW...ish Order Women Like Pizza…the backstory – Daniel D. Teoli Jr. (wordpress.com)
  4. I don't know even what that is. But I like my text sharp. I guess I'm just out of touch...an old film photog from the 70's. I will post a short piece I did on scene transitions. Had lots of trouble with text. When you reduce the res some styles look like crap. That was where the previously posted tests in this thread emanated from.
  5. Text Resolution Examples D.D.Teoli Jr. : D.D.Teoli Jr. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive 240P - 4K tests I like shadow text but it doe not hold up when reduced.
  6. You guys with the home built scanners should post some example scans. Whatever scanner I get needs to be sprocketless. Many of my films are in terrible condition. As far as mirrorless cams being used in a home scanner? I guess you would need one with an electronic shutter. If it had a mechanical shutter I'd think it would soon wear out. I talked with one guy from eBay that made a scanner. He would not go into details too much with me, but he said he said to pay $4,000 to get a 4K camera with no lens. Apparently he has all the rest worked out as he has been producing scans right along. But he upgraded to 4K recently for a client.
  7. Borrah Minevitch is another old time great that is all but forgotten. He ran the 'The Harmonica Rascals.' Here is a clip of him in action... Borrah Minevitch And His Harmonica School : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive
  8. A year ago the forum predictions were Oprah or Michelle Obama would be President. Last month the forum claimed as facts were the Pope was arrested for running a child porno ring, Trump had committed suicide, Joe Biden had committed suicide, Hunter Biden had committed suicide and Trump had ordered the military to arrest some such ring of conspirators that stole the election. A couple weeks ago the fact was China is invading Taiwan. I've been on forums since 1998. As I said...99% of the predictions are BS. And a lot of the 'facts' turn out to be fake news as well. But once in a while they may pay off. Like in the gambling run on GameStop.
  9. Yes, Deakins talked about doing remote stop pulls for 1917. The focus pulling was remote as well. He would do the stop pull as he circled a subject to keep the exposure constant.
  10. https://blogs.library.duke.edu/bitstreams/2016/06/23/color-bars-test-patterns/ I thought the Indian one was fake!
  11. Does color film even have much silver in it? I'm thinking it is mostly dyes as opposed to BW film.
  12. GD...what is wrong with the world niche? Anything is possible. The 4.7gb inkjet printable M-discs seem to be discontinued. They were the basis of my VHS video archive. Memorex stopped making their branded 4.7GB M-disc as well. One day you wake up and boom...everything has gone to hell. I'm on a ton of forums. About 99% of the predictions end up being wrong. So 'predictions' of cheap film do not excite me.
  13. Do some tests and lets see the difference between all red and mixed. I shot a lot of all red in the RLD in Amsterdam. They were all candid, all pushed and zone focused. Some all red. These were all pushed 2 stops or so and high ISO, shot with a wide open lens and cropped. So they are not representative of what the best would look like. They would have been sharper if I was not shooting in a local where photography was banned and you could get your ass kicked if caught. You have to walk and shoot! Mixed light De Wallen 48 2014 Daniel D.Teoli Jr : Daniel D.Teoli Jr. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive All red light Prostitute Amsterdam 12-2014 Daniel D. Teoli Jr : Daniel D. Teoli Jr. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive Do some tests. That is your answer. Then let us know.
  14. What is the difference between 16mm films with a clear edge vs. one with a black edge? Is one a copy and the other one an original? These would both be double sprocket, silent film positives I am referring to.
  15. Here are some recent examples to illustrate the need grade by the method you are viewing. They are found footage from an old VHS tape someone had trashed. I collect commercials so cut them out of the tape. The MP4 conversions were very saturated so I decreased saturation down by 40% to 50%. After that they looked doable for old EP VHS video recordings. But after uploading to the I.A. they are too contrasty, and some parts dark with loss of shadow detail and still lots of saturation in parts. American Express Commercial Jerry Seinfeld 1996 VHS : D.d.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive Kodak Advantix Film Commercial 1996 VHS : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive It just sums up that every viewing method needs its own grade. I've mentioned this before to you about printing as well as scanning methods. They all inject their own look to things. Papers, Ink and Printers…they Matter! – Daniel D. Teoli Jr. (wordpress.com) If you got a properly balanced monitor the photo of the little girl should go from bluish on the left to normal looking on the right. With the middle photo in-between. They show the difference in papers and printers.
  16. No, I don't, except if I was using film. For digital it is all screen for me. And really, much of my work is guesstimate. But don't go by me. I'm a loose goose. For filmmaking I'd be a war type of cine man, an 'on the fly' shooter. I'm not an anal setup type of person. You can't do light reading for most of my work anyway. Take this lady. It was shot from the hip, at the apex of the arm swing with my hand at my side while walking by. Zone focus, zone exposure and heavy PP. The white foam, being less than a foot away from the lens, gave off terrible reflection of the infrared flash. It is very hard to balance 1 foot bright white from 6 foot pitch black for exposure. It is a one shot deal. Get it or not, but no second chance. Living In A Cardboard Box IR Flash D.D.Teoli Jr. : D.D.Teoli Jr. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive This one got more exposure work. I walked by and shot a test photo. I walked away to study it. Then went back for a second helping. But none of my photos work without massive PP. You can't shoot into the sun like this with a fisheye and get great photos...unless you can make it work in post. Pinky from The Americans 60 years after Frank : Daniel D. Teoli Jr. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive This one I did many, many test exposures while waiting in communion line. It was shot with the 2 second self-timer. Lots of PP. Pushed maybe 1-1/2 stops. You can't shoot available light with a slow f5.6 adapted lens that makes it into an f8 in dim light. I limit my ISO to 3000 or it is too crappy. All I got is old gear. Bishop Michael J. Bransfield Wheeling WV Cathedral D. D. Teoli Jr. : Daniel D. Teoli Jr. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive If you want to be a good , trad cine man or cine lady. Use a meter. If nothing else it makes you look like you know what your doing! No one says you have to go all by the meter anyway. Back the 60's we used the sunny rule of 16.
  17. Opening info panel of this stock film company looks pretty good for being scratched up. What type of software does this? (449) 1939 NEW YORK CITY NEWSREEL "THE WONDER CITY" 72332D - YouTube Normally I am not into adding scratches and dust, trying to fake it. I try to do the opposite with old films if I could. But I have lots of old films with missing titles. I bought some vintage 3D title sets that are original to the period, now just need to add some dust and scratches and defocus a bit to lower resolution. I hope it helps blend the titles in so they don't stand out so much. They may really need a lot of defocusing. Some of these old films looks like 3rd or 4th generation dupes. Some of the old title sets look to be made out of ceramic or some such thing. Heavy rock material. Like plaster, just harder. I got lots of old books on titling. When I get them scanned I will post here.
  18. I shot a few photos of old cans and reels. They will give you an idea of how films were stored and shipped back in the day. Small Gauge Film Reel & Can Archive Vol.7 D.D. Teoli Jr. A.C. : D.D.teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive I got lots more, but no time to get to them for now.
  19. Before tape they had wire recorders. But wax cylinders were prehistoric! I acquired a large collection of wax cylinder recordings in digital form. When I have time I will upload more. https://archive.org/search.php?query=wax+cylinder+teoli
  20. The Gold MAM-A DVD's were touted as an archival option for optical media. Well, they are marginally better than AZO silver DVD's, but not by much. In sun tests the AZO Silver DVD's died on average at 25 days of sun. The Gold MAM-A DVD's lasted 27 days in the sun. The old Kodak 100 years Gold DVD's lasted 33 days. The Kodak DVD's were the best I've tested other than M-Disc. But Kodak discontinued them long ago. Any current Kodak Gold production is said not to be the same as the original production. (But I have not tested them.) The Kodak Gold disc I tested was one of the last of the 2007 production. M-Disc on the other hand lasted a year in the sun with no issues whatsoever. Today I went to restock my inkjet printable 4.7gb M-Disc DVD's and they look to be discontinued. Even the branded non-printable M-Disc DVD are gone. All they have is Blu-ray M-Disc and the higher capacity multi- layer M-Disc. What a mess. I looked all over hell and nothing. Some people are selling a box or a handful here or there at inflated prices. I am a big user of the 4.7gb M-Disc with my archival work. Don't know if it is something temporary or not. But have gone back to the crummy Gold MAM-A discs and am saving my 73 remaining 4.7GB M-Disc for important projects. Gold discs don't suffer from disc bronzing as far as I can tell. Once your silver discs start bronzing, the writing is on the proverbial wall. Internet Archive Search: disc bronzing teoli M-Disc does not seem to suffer from disc delamination either. Internet Archive Search: DVD delamination teoli Gold discs are a better option that silver AZO discs, but in my opinion they are overpriced for what they offer.
  21. Why don't they sell them? Are old machines, even if in working order, that worthless?
  22. Wow, had no idea it was such a pain. Sounds like even in the best of times it was a problem child. What was the air used for? Was it to keep the film dust free?
  23. When you are done with conforming to the specs, look at your final work on TV to see how it holds up. There are all sort of TV's, but generally the TV's boost the contrast and saturation. What looks good on my monitor, looks so-so on the TV. In the end I just have to make a good enough grade that is all-purpose. Other option is I have to make grades for various viewing options. Just because it conforms to specs does not mean you are happy with the results.
  24. Shadow Telecine S 35mm and S 16mm film HD SD magnetic and optical sound. | eBay Looks like it was $$ when new, but if you can't get a scan out of it, what good is it. Everything is sold as-is, so it is a crapshoot.
