  1. hmm if this is true then a brief stint in LA might be a good idea to get some work as studios rush to clear the strike date
  2. hey olex i like that idea  what would be an optimal focal length for super16?
  3. if you want to see some kinoptik 9mm footage you can check out a-cam's website www.ikonoskope.com or something.. those are the 921 versions that should be good.. i just bought one for about 475$ incidentally. I tihnk they sort of fly under the radar on ebay. You can look for century 3.5mm lenses too. just put 'century lens' as a search query
  4. an xl1 should be pretty good I imagine as it would be quiet.. Lenses are the biggest factor I guess. I guess you'll need something telephoto and wide.. and maybe a periscope lens.. somebody with more experience can help you wiht this i'm sure
  5. both will be the same for what you need.. the circular pola however is used for auto focusing lenses and costs more
  6. sorry to say but your controller chip is probably fried
  7. where do u get the pads from? Anything's got to be better than microfiber.. use it once and you get dust in it and I dont think you can exactly wash it out. I put some scratches in my front element because of that :( but they are few and very fine at least
  8. I read on myspace forum that you basically end up giving your movie away to distributors if you are starting out. Eff that..
  9. if i remember correctly what I read from Bescor, they charge them once every 6 months and dont let them drop under 50% charge and keep them in whatever optimal temperature they're supposped to be kept in
  10. Wilmington NC was bigtime for a while during the 90s and even earlier with Dino De Laurentiis's studio, bought later by Coralco and now.. I don't know. Lots of great movies shot in NC though. I hope to be next in line!
  11. Gosh why so much hate for Star Wars? I have always adored the original trilogy. It was a hit on so many levels for me.. You have this blend of a Western and feudal Japan, set in intergalactic science fiction. You had a Kubrickian level of detail for sets and scenes.. you had great actors, characters and great writing and editing. Then there was just the visuals and SFX that blew away anything before it. Finally there was the score, which will go down as the most memorable in film history. Sure Lucas didn't do much of what made it so good, but he supervised it all, and staged a marketing coup that made him the billionaire that he is today I think that people will one day look at the period between 77 and maybe 1990 as the golden age of action movies
  12. i can't find anything about an adapter from aaton to arri bayonet mount. It looks impossible just from what i've seen.. aaton seems to have a large flange wihle the arri-b is more compact judging by photos. Are there such adapters?? thanks
  13. I unlatch the spring pins that set those guide rails... then i pull the triggler a little to let it run through.. then form the loops.. forgot the # of sprockets above and below.. just follow the diagram. I had to sortof of push the film so it catches on the sprockets.. anyhow run it until the sprockets are correctly running into the holels and then put the plate back on and run it
  14. bumping this since there isn't much on the web that i could find other than this thread hehe.. So do range extenders work with zoom lenses? I was under the assumption that they would double the focal length (50-100 zoom becomes 100-200).
  15. so how do diopters look when you're wide angled?
  16. Perhaps a silly question but it seems that for most ang lenses, the minimum focus distance is 5 feet. Is that a big problem or is most filming done from a distance anyway? THanks
  17. guess i better get that loop right then
  18. I practice loading an NPR mag but there's a little spring pin inside the mag that seems to snag on the sprocket holes. What is it? The stabilizer pin?
  19. does anybody know what lenses were used?
  20. Majored in media with a concentration on film. Half the faculty were arrogant a-holes and half the students were arrogant a-holes. Some of the people I knew went on to do some crew work in tv and so forth. A couple I know are doing film festival stuff overseas.. or something. I went to college to buy myself time. I'm still buying time with a job in education, but I am a little wiser I think. I learned a LOT while at school.. a good bit in my major, but much of my learning came from just being in college's learning and social environment. If you are clever and have already written material that suits a low budget, then you should definitely make a movie. If you haven't... well either move to hollywood and be pimped until you get established in one of the trades, or go to school.
  21. dont they use a viper for CSI sometimes too?
  22. nice ot see my thread bumped back up... :) best of luck to anybody on here that might happen to be going on the show.. I guess there's the whole reality tv star crap element to it, but instead of getting wrapped up in real life, you'll be able to pursue something in the field with few distractions
  23. Hey Jon, thanx for that So here's another dumb question.. what types of shots are focus pullers used for the most? Is it with zooming or with dollies or just to shift focus from one character to another behind them? I've never really watched a movie to concentrate on focusing, since it's one of those jobs where your success is based on how much you are not noticed. Now I'm thinking that there must be a lot of skill and planning involved to get it right. Does anybody have any movies in mind that have superior focusing techniques? Thanks again
  24. Ok this is me wanting to learn more about the technique, so apologies if you thought I would teach you, but maybe a pro can provide info. I think taht mostm of the questions are easy to answer, but I'm always trying to get better insight on these types of jobs so I asked them anyway. Feel free to add what you know! Anyhow, I guess the 2 main elements to follow focuses are set up and operation. So With set up: Do you need to set the lens in a particular way before anything? I take it that you make marks on the disk with some dry erase pen.. Are there any tips for determining where to set your focus points? Also how do you get the timing right since I doubt the camera person can communicate verbally with the puller. With operation: How does the camera operator and puller handle handheld work, especially when theres running or large pans involved? Are there situations where pullers should not be used? Should the camera operator focus at times too? Thanks a lot
