Hi, We are two technicians working in the film industry in France (a grip guy and a gaffer) and we just discovered this very interesting forum. We particularly noticed that gaffers and cinematographers were asking questions about light output and what aperture is obtained at a certain distance. It happens that with the help of two IT engineers we developed an iOS app responding to this question about 2 years ago. First and for all, we’re not going to post messages everywhere on this forum to sell our app nor are we going to pollute your threads to gain in visibility. We just think some of you might be interested in what we created and since we’re a really small team working on off-time we can’t do any real advertising, so you probably wouldn’t know our app existed. Our app is called Predilux (for pre-diction and lux for light) and predicts the exposure as measured by a light meter, by choosing a light source and a distance. Or inversely predicts the distance to the light source by specifying the exposure. Predilux takes into account: Camera settings (FPS, ISO, Shutter angle) Source settings (Focalisation, Lenses, Grids, Dimmer, CCT, etc) Gels mounted on or close to the source (All ROSCO e-colour+ range) All results have been experimentally verified by us with a light meter in rental houses. For each source setting we made several measurements at different distances and this took a lot of time. So Predilux does not rely on constructor’s data, but on real data reflecting the state of the equipment as found in rental houses. Our data sometimes differs from the constructor’s data. I'm a DP working out of Central America and most of my work is high-end commercials in the region. I do some eventual documentaries, music videos, short films, etc, but my bread and butter is commercial work. So far, I've been renting gear out and mostly shooting on Arri Alexa Plus and RED Epic MX. I do not own any important personal gear. There are a couple of jobs coming up and I have the opportunity to invest about $20k on a camera package. 50% of the investment would be paid off within the next 2-3 months. So far, I've been thinking about purchasing a used Arri AMIRA. I like the fact that you can shoot 3.4k RAW, am a huge fan of ARRI's color science and the sensor's dynamic range. My main concern is that this camera was released six years ago and sensor technology is quickly evolving. I've also been looking at the new Sony FX9 as an option or even spending a little more money and going for a RED GEMINI (just because of native resolution and trying to future proof the investment). My gut keeps telling to go with the AMIRA, but I would really like to hear other opinions and ideas! Thanks.

Yep… it’s the Deakins camera. I’m gutted to have to do this, but the doctors have ordered a downsize (for my mangled spine) and I have to move back to a smaller/mini-er camera package. So I’m putting my beloved Arri Alexa Studio up for sale. It’s got all of Arri’s usual teutonic deliciousness, but unlike other Alexas, this one comes with the added benefits of a true global shutter, internal ND, and the real camera operators delight - a proper optical viewfinder. For me it was largely the global shutter that drew me to the Studio. The motion cadence is perfect, pans are perfect (no matter the speed), handheld operating doesn’t skew the image in any way as you bump along. Strobing lights and muzzle flashes can’t cause those horrible CMOS striping artefacts that you’ll see on rolling shutter cameras (and the retakes that go with them). It really does step things up a notch in the overall image. And the optical viewfinder? You realise pretty instantly the difference it makes. It allows you to operate the camera in real-time. Modern EVFs are getting better and better, but they still have milliseconds of delay - and you’ve fought against them every time you’ve tried to follow an actor jumping or standing up quickly, or detailed insert shots with precise movements within the frame - being able to respond in real-time means you can follow specific actions precisely, and it’s a wonderful, wonderful thing as a camera operator. It really does translate into fewer takes being needed. So the standout features of the camera are: - HD/2k Prores4444 and DNxHD - 2.8k Arriraw - Up to 120fps - Global Shutter - Internal ND - 4:3 Anamorphic Sensor - Alexa Plus Module (for full integration with the WCU-4 or SXU-1) The camera is in excellent used condition, and has never skipped a beat for me. It has a moderate 2700 hours on the clock (so thousands of hours of life left in it). It has everything you need to get shooting, including a full seven 64GB SxS cards (so you won’t be out another couple of thousand dollars just to get enough recording media to shoot for a full day). I recently acquired a Clairmont Camera breakout box and have fallen into a small conundrum. It is a 12v breakout box with three 3-pin 12v outputs, two 11-pin 12v outputs, and a 2-pin 12v input. It also features a 3-pin cable to connect to a remote switch connector and has a 'start/stop' button. I was going to use this for an ARRI SR I. Being relatively new to the SR camera, the 2-pin 12v input is what baffles me. Would I need a 11-pin to 2-pin male-to-male cable running from the camera to the box? Hello, I was hoping if there was anyone who's currently thinking of selling an Arri SR (not looking for a specific model though Super 16 compatibility would be a huge bonus) for a relatively cheap price by any chance? I'm not working off of a real specific budget, but I am hoping to see if there are any offers underneath $5,000. I've found some offers on other websites that fit my budget (albeit at still considerably scalpy prices from what I've seen), but I'd thought I'd at least check by here seeing how over the years there seems to be a number of Arriflex SR kits being sold at reasonable prices in comparison to most I've seen online. For sale is our full Super 16mm ARRI SR3 Advanced Highspeed kit. This is a full kit including everything you need to shoot. We purchased the camera in 2014 and have used it on a couple of shoots. In 2016 we had it professionally serviced by Panavision in Sydney, one of the batteries was also repacked in 2016 by battery world. See the gear list (Picture) for everything included in the kit with a description of the condition. It was most recently used for a short film in January 2019. As you would expect the kit has got standard wear and tear, the previous owners were Panavision UK. This wear and tear is cosmetic only and does not effect the functionality of the camera. The lens is in mint condition, no fungus or haze. The focus and aperture ring is smooth. We are based in Adelaide, South Australia. Can post via (insured) courier at buyers expense or local pickup. Hi, I work at a teaching facility where we have six Arri-S kits with matte boxes. We've been able to maintain all the equipment for a very long time, but one thing we're running out of and can't seem to find are the trays that hold the 2 x 2" filters. We're down to one per matte box, instead of the two they can hold. Does anyone know where I can obtain more? Or is there a relatively sturdy DIY replacement? Could a holder be 3-D printed? I recently came across a well known DP's story on Instagram in which it was seen two cameras were stacked on top of each other. It was noticable that both the cameras had different magnifications (different lenses). I can't help but wonder why he might have done this given that these cams shoot 4k/6k or so, he might as well have just cropped in as required. Would be great if someone with experience could explain why this is done. I have attached a screenshot for reference.
