  2. Hey everyone! It's my first time posting here! My name is Marc and I'm an aspiring Cinematographer! I came here to post my work (Demo Reel) and It would be awesome to hear some opinions, feedbacks, critiques etc. All of the footage were shot with DSLRs. I'm serious about this stuff so I need to get better. I appreciate it! I'm also posting still images of what I recently shot! I guess you can just critique on the lighting for those ones. Do I have what it takes? Or should I just go and pursue other areas of film or in general? thanks!! Demo Reel: http://tinypic.com/r/sdzos1/8 http://tinypic.com/r/1g3ibp/8 http://tinypic.com/r/2chl3rd/8 Sincerely, Marc
  3. Hello everyone, I was doing some tests at my school with an Alexa. I wanted to do graphics with the different EI : Luma value of a Kodak grey card = f(stops from -10 to +10) basically. I wanted to do this both in Rec 709 and Log C but only did the 709 tests as of yet. For each EI I placed my "+0" by spot metering the grey card, but noticed two things. 1/ As I kind of suspected, it wasn't falling on the 50% IRE (512,512,512 when shooting Rec 709 in 10 bit) 2/ My Sekonic gives me half a stop of difference between spot metering of that 18% grey and incident reading (when the spot was reading 5.6, the incident gave 4 1/2) So I kind of have three different possibilties for my zero. Which one should I use ? Is that true that Sekonics are set to read 12.5% grey card instead of 18 (which I guess would explain the weird difference) When a cinematographer says he places a caucasian face on +1, which one of the three 'zeros' is he refering to ? Ultimately, do we place the grey card anywhere we want between say 30 and 50 as some people suggest ? That's all I have to ask for now, hope the questions make some sens ! And I hope it hasn't been asked and answered a thousand time. Tom Yanowitz, film student
  4. Hi All, Hope you are well, i needed some advice and after loads of research on the internet someone recommended for me to come on here as i cant seem to find any solid answers. I am looking to set up a new photography and cinematography company in the next few months, and was hoping you guys can help me with the following: What cameras and lenses do i need to invest in? I will be sending out 3 videographers/cinematographers and 1 photographer to each event (mostly weddings). Also i would like to keep costs down but appreciate that i may need to pay that extra bit for quality. Are there any training courses you guys can recommend that i can send the team on where they can learn everything they need to learn about using the cameras, lenses and how to capture certain shots/clips. Finally i am looking to outsource the editing side of things initially, how much on average should i be looking to pay a freelancer video editor for a days worth of footage, so if i was to provide raw footage from a one day event and expected back a trailer and 1 hour edited film? Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  5. I'm from London, 16 years old and female. Ever since I first watched Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho', I knew I wanted to be a director. I became obsessed, I watch all of his films around four times each and went through each one, studying the use of his particularly dramatic and iconic instrumental music and the use of his camera angles. I want to be able to write my own screenplays and put a team together to collaborate and put it to life. I've already started writing a few, one of which was a adaption of the novel 'Of Mice and Men', which was used for a stage production. I'm also writing with a friend of mine, a crime avant-garde inspired story, with which we are going to film. However, I know I need direction. I understand that this business is extremely bitterly hard to get into and to make a living, but this is all I want to do with my life. I wanted to ask a few questions: 1.) Is it hard for a female to get noticed in the film industry? I don't mind working in a mostly male dominated industry, I just know that there aren't as many women who film, compared to men. 2.) Camera recommendations and lenses too. I need to find a camera suitable of shooting raw material. 3.) I noticed that a lot of film directors never went to university, they went straight in by doing apprenticeship type work. I would never be able to do that, so I know I need to go to university. What would be a good choice of one in London? 4.) Lighting equipment. I would like to know what types you use. Thank you for reading.

  9. I have a clean, well maintained, ready to shoot Sony PMW-EX3 Pro HD camera for sale with a few extras. It's an excellent run and gun camera that is inexpensive to operate. The Sony pop on batteries are inexpensive, light and efficient compared to bricks. I've used inexpensive fast SD cards with the included SxS to SD card adapters and they work great. A 16GB card holds about 50 min. at full 1080p and costs only $17 at B&H. You can use Nikon, or other lenses, with a Nikon to Sony mount adapter, or use the included Sony power zoom which is plenty good to get work done. I am the sole owner/operator. I've never rented it, nor let anyone else touch or even breathe on it. :) $2800 See photos and more details at http://www.prairiepictures.com/gear.html Thanks! Martin

  15. Odd request, but here goes: An upcoming script calls for the ability to record at least half-decent looking 720p at 24p for...3 hours straight, no cuts. One locked-off shot down a beach (powering everything is another question entirely) that has to just roll for 3 hours. This is not for timelapse: It needs to actually roll 24p for three hours continuously. What sort of camera (plus external recorder, potentially) system might you aficionados recommend for a task like this one? I have a 7D at my disposal, but I figure that won't do me much good. Probably looking at something with at least SDI out, wonder if there's a way to go direct to some spinning disk array or something... It's basically gonna be a parody of those YouTube videos that are just stock footage, like "3 Hours Tranquil Beach Waterfall Blue Skies," but in a dark demented sort of way. Thanks for trying! -Rob
  16. I am selling my Arriflex 435 ES camera. This camera is in great condition and runs perfectly! It was well maintained and recently serviced. The Arriflex 435 ES is a fantastic MOS film camera that has been trusted and used worldwide for years. The 435 is amazing for slow-motion, running crystal sync up to 150 fps! It's a lightweight camera, yet it's incredibly sturdy. The ES stands for electronic shutter meaning that the 435 ES can adjust its shutter electronically, which is great for speed ramping, something this camera does well. The Arriflex 435 ES will serve you well for years to come. The camera is still highly in use today, with many directors and cinematographers choosing to shoot on it due to its high-speed capabilities, and overall compact lightweight design. The package includes: Arri Arriflex 435 ES Camera Integrated Video Assist (IVS) (3) 400' Magazines Short Viewfinder Long Viewfinder Extension Heated Eyecup Heater Cable RCU-1 Remote Control Unit RCU Long Cable WL-3 Work Light 24v Plug-In Module Carrying handle Right Hand Grip w/Trigger Large Flight Case Small Flight Case Film is a beautiful medium, and will be used to capture gorgeous cinematic images for a long time to come. I am asking $8,500 but I am open and willing to negotiate a lower price, so make me an offer! Thanks! I am also selling an Arriflex SR3 Advanced package for $3,500 OBO. Includes 3 mags, 2 batteries, mattebox, rods, etc. Hit me up if you're interested!

  19. Hi everyone, I was asked to photograph a feature documentary film in a month time and I was wondering if I could get some advice as to what would be the best camera for the job. It's a documentary essentially filming two people having dinner in a studio set restaurant for the whole film, we are going for the cinematic approach rather an interview documentary. The fact that we're filming in a studio gives me plenty of control in lighting, which I'm going for an intimate, moody yet natural look. Our narrative was inffluenced by film My dinner with Andre yet we want to make it more cinematic. I'm going to go the Cooke S4 due to warmth in Skin tone but I've not decided yet which camera would work best. We're gong for a two camera set up due to the nature of this project to maximise coverage as the shoot is only 5 days. This film will get threatical release so that needs to be in consideration. I was looking the spect and sensor arri Amira, but being 2k I wasn't sure if it was the right camera for this. I appreciate any advice on the matter, Many thanks,
  20. Hello, I have a question that applies both to still photography as it does to cinematography, I hope I will not get banned for that! As a cinematographer, I find hard to differentiate the two, as I use my photographic work a lot, as an inspiration and experimental playground in my cinematography work. Currently, I am wondering what are the best ways to find a fisheye accessory or get a fisheye lens for a very low price. The goal is to fit in a lot of landscape, and get distortion effects on faces or other subjects. I realize that usually these lenses or add-ons are expensive because they are made with a lot of polished glass that costs money to manufacture. However, I am wondering if over the years some older lenses or accessories become cheaper in second-hand stores. I am trying to attach the lens: -either to "old-school" manual lenses (for still cameras such as Pentax MX, Minolta X-300, Olympus Pen F, Pentacon SIX TL, Canon) for photo work/research; -or to Super-8 cameras (Canon 310 XL, Bauer C105 or C107) for film work; -or to more recent digital bodies (Canon EOS rebel, Sony NEX 3) for digital film work. The lens has to be as fisheye as possible and full-frame if possible! The closest I've been (and cheapest) was a TV Zoom Lens someone sold me for 5 euros at a rummage sale that used to be from a Canon video camcorder from the 70s, with macro functions, zoom functions, and quite wide angle. I can easily adapt it on the Sony NEX because it has a C-mount, but it requires cropping and is very bulky.
  21. Hello, I just bought a NAC 16mm High Speed Camera. I got it for a bargain price and the camera is in mint shape and everything functions. I was wondering if anyone has used this camera before? I'm looking to use it for a 16mm demo I'm making for the opening scene. I want to shoot some slow motion of the opening scene to add into the super 16mm footage. I also have searched and even contacted NAC and they have nothing to offer on maintenance on the camera. I noticed there is a oil hole and I'm only looking to go up to 500 fps or maybe 1000 fps the highest. Any other info on this camera would be great to know or if anyone knows anything about the camera besides the small info online and in the owners manual which has nothing to offer. Thanks
  22. Hey guys, what are your thoughts on the new Blackmagic Ursa? In need of 4K so I can be more flexible with clients when they want to zoom in on an image. Is it worth the buy? Thanks!

  24. I have a Ranger 36 Inovativ camera cart for sale! It was a "floor model", but is pretty much brand new. Reasons you should buy my cart: - Retail: They go for $3,155 in store pick up or $3,230 delivery. But you can buy mine for $2,900! If you can deal with a never-been-used-on-the-field, a couple cosmetic scratches cart, you save $255! Plus, there is a 6 week waiting period for these carts. - Great design: Easy to build, use, and accessorize. I can build and tear down the cart in 28 seconds! - Accessories: Inovativ has a lot of accessories to make your cart pimptastic. They are also compatible with backstage accessories. - Useful: Obviously they are useful. Whether you are a Camera Assistant, Steadicam Op, Sound guy, musician, mechanic, etc. The only reason I'm selling it is to buy a larger Inovativ Cart. I am in love with this company and their product... and you should be to! Feel to email me: MarshallArtsPictures@gmail.com For pictures go to: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/for/4514273829.html
