  1. A western short film I shot has been released. Shot in October 2019 over 3 days (all over night). I used the Alexa Mini with Atlas Anamorphics (32, 65, 100). For the look of the film, we wanted to emulate the highlight response of kodak film, so we underexposed the entire project by two stops and brought it back up in the color grade. This gave us a lot of highlight detail and fogged the shadows at the same time. I've done this before on the feature film, The Watchman's Canoe. Under-exposing the logc image essentially redistributes the dynamic range of the image. Bringing it back up in the color grade will introduce noise, but de-noising or grain hides all of that. We I get, in the color grade, is a lot of highlight detail that I think shrank down. In the film, look at the curtains of the interior shots. They were really bright when we looked at them on set with the proxy LUT, but I was able to finesse them in the color grade. What do you think?
  2. I'd love any comments or critiques on this latest music video I shot. Specs: ARRI Amira 4k 60fps or 2k 200fps Canon CN-E Primes Let me know if you have other specific questions. Thanks! DI
  3. Hi guys Long time reader, first-time poster on the forum. Recently shot a short film, you can see here: https://vimeo.com/322197103 Would love some feedback. For context, I shot it as a one-man band, on Alexa Mini with Zeiss Superspeeds and glimmer glass. A lot of neg fill, 2 x astra litepanels and 1 x litepanels gemini.
  4. Hi everyone, so this is the first showreel i have produced that shows all my favourite imagery while working as a DP and/or Operator. I think i am still trying to develop my skills by taking on varied genres and ideas - using aspect ratio, lighting, composition and movement to tell stories. I would love to hear from cinematographers what you think of the work so far, as well as what constructive criticism you have to offer. Here's the link: https://vimeo.com/250899536 Best Wishes, Mat
  5. Hi all, Just finished my new cinematography reel which I also edited myself. Its a mix of commercial, fashion, documentary, and a bit of narrative work. Id like to be doing more narrative and doc work so I tried to push it in that direction, while keeping it light and fun with a good mix of commercial work to appeal to potential clients. Would love some feedback. I feel proud of my work but I also feel like I am lacking a certain polished, high cinema look that I am constantly pushing for and watching other work to try to understand how to achieve. Anyways would love to hear your thoughts, the good the bad and the ugly. I am always trying to push myself and improve my work. Thanks in advance! Erynn
  6. This is a short film I shot earlier this year - Buden (Awake; directed by Simon Moe and Lara Lovrič). I also worked as a 1st AD, editor, producer, sound designer and colorist. The language is Slovene but it has HQ English subtitles. We are enthusiast student filmmakers with aprox. 4 years filmmaking experience. International festival Zoom 11 chose this film as one of the "Top 10" film (503 were submitted).I would be very happy to get some honest feedback, specifically on my cinematography. Majority of the film was shot on Canon EOS cams, the slow-mo sequence was shot on Sony A7s and some internal shots on Nikon D3300. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg5angkY8Ig&t=72s Thank you and best regards, Martin
  7. I'm into commercial photography (as a hobby), so yesterday I decided to take some random shots of some bottles and cigars found at home. Since I don't have any lighting equipment, I used desk lamps and a construction light. Tried to match them with CTOs though. I didn't fill any glasses because I was not willing to drink or throwing them away, and since they're only tests, it doesn't really matter. Please give me feedback on lighting, setups, and post, as I would really like to get a job as a commercial photographer. Thank you in advance. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwHns6JAzPghdnBoMndPSG40SDQ/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwHns6JAzPghblVjczhvdm1ZcVk/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwHns6JAzPghM21GNjhHMXVxeVk/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwHns6JAzPghNTY2alVram1vREE/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwHns6JAzPghMHRZRzkxeVFQcWs/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwHns6JAzPghZXpyaE9SWlQtbEU/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwHns6JAzPghRDZ1Vk1BMnJ0amc/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwHns6JAzPghSGVXS0UtVFRKcGs/view?usp=sharing

  9. Hey everyone! It's my first time posting here! My name is Marc and I'm an aspiring Cinematographer! I came here to post my work (Demo Reel) and It would be awesome to hear some opinions, feedbacks, critiques etc. All of the footage were shot with DSLRs. I'm serious about this stuff so I need to get better. I appreciate it! I'm also posting still images of what I recently shot! I guess you can just critique on the lighting for those ones. Do I have what it takes? Or should I just go and pursue other areas of film or in general? thanks!! 10. This is a 4-minute excerpt from a 90-minute film I'm working on. What works? What doesn't? What would you suggest I do differently next year? https://vimeo.com/107255692 thanks in advance.
  11. Hello, I just put up my first cinematography reel. I would really like any thoughts, impressions, or critiques from some of the cinematography community... The work represented is from various narrative shorts over the last few years. Thanks very much!
  12. This is a student short that we did last semester and I wanted to get some other views on the film. Let me know what you think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmamRYUwx-Q

  14. Hi Everybody at the www.cinematography.com Forum, Thank you for everybody's wise words and great advice, I have come on a great amount since I have started following this forum. I have just finished a short film (about 35 minutes in duration) for my 3rd, and Final, year in University. I am studying 'Film & Television Production' in the UK and would love any creative/constructive criticism that people have so that I can improve/gain some skills. This is my first short film i have lit myself. Here is a trailer that our group have produced, i'm looking for advice to do with lighting rather than trailer editing (as I only had partial input on this). Obviously it goes without saying we don't have copyright for the songs used but this is okay for our module: This was shot on a 5D mk II (as is commonplace for student films). Many, many thanks for the time taken to watch the trailer and provide feedback. All the Best, Jonny Treherne P.S. I apologise that this is a re-post but I believe this is the more relevant thread.
  15. Hey everyone, I just wrapped up my first music video. Definitely a lot of things learned to improve workflow next time around but I'm relatively happy with the result. I would appreciate any advice on how to improve the next one and opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of this one. Thanks, Frank
