  3. hi everybody! i'm Marco, dop from italy. i'm going to shoot a short movie set in 1840: night, indoor, one big room. One of the options (due to logistic and creative choices) is to light up the set only with the candles. we'll use an alexa mini and i'm looking for the best lenses at full aperture (1.4T, i think), so possibly with less aberration, softness, low contrast... in this interview, Gavin Finney explains advantages and disavantages of shooting in canldelight in 2015. i really love is work and i found out that they shoot with Leica Summilux-C. Onestly, i don't know if we can afford them, so i'm looking for something slightly cheaper (between 500-1000 $/€ daily) i tried the Zeiss Super Speed MarkIII, very very cheap, nice and "vintage", but i find them terrible at T1.3. Can anybody help me? thankyou! M

  5. Hi everybody, I was reading a previous issues of "Film and Digital Times" and I came across a portion in wich the editor ask one of the lens engeneers behind the signature primes: -Q: "What happens with a large format lens like a signature prime on a Super 35mm camera like an Alexa SXT?" -A: "The LF lens looks the same as the S35 lens. An 18mm LF lens on the S35 camera looks just like an 18mm S35 lens on the S35 camera" Maybe I lack of knowledge, but I thought we were going to get a narrower field of view. So following the same logic for example if I put a 50mmn Master prime on an Arri 416 plus my lens would give me the same FOV as, for example, a 50mm Ultra 16 prime. I'm really confused about what happens when we put a bigger format lens on a smaller format sensor. Thanks in advance!

  14. Hey everybody, I'm considering investing in a 12mm cine lens for my BMPCC and while browsing I've come across the Kowa Prominar Micro Four Thirds lenses. They don't have geared focus rings, but do feature both F-stops and T-stops interestingly enough. Does anybody have experience with these lenses? All the footage and photos I've seen from them are quite lovely, but would they really be worth the extra money I might spend on them versus, say, a Rokinon or SLR Magic cine lens?
  15. Hi Gang - I am sure this has been asked many times before but what lenses would you recommend for a Bolex H16 Reflex (non super 16)? Currently I have a Kern-Paillard 25mm (no RX markings on it), but I was looking for something with a wider view angle. Maybe like a 10mm? Thanks a lot! Gabi

  19. Wondering if anyone has purchased a lens or had a cine modification done by PCHood/Cinematics company in China? They rehouse many different lens brands. It looks like they just put new housing over the top of existing lenses like the Zeiss ZE or Sigma 18-35. But wondering if the Cine mod increases the focus travel of the Still lenses? Could be a great solution. Thanks! Doug

  21. Good afternoon everyone, I have a run & gun gig coming up in the foreseeable future for which I'd like to give the new BMPCC 4K a shot (I don't technically own one yet, but hopefully will reasonably soon). Due to the job's specific nature, I will require an extremely lightweight and portable setup. I've done similar work in the past and always suffered from having to work with primes (both in terms of weight and overall practicality), so this time I decided I'd rather stick with a single zoom for the entirety of the shoot. On a full-frame camera I would probably just opt for the Sigma 18-35 f1.8, but being the new BM Pocket M4/3, I don't think that would give me enough range to handle a broad enough variety of situations. I've done a little bit of research for suitable options and found that quite a few people seem to be praising the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 M.Zuiko PRO as a good one for video. Has anyone here had any experience with it? Or would you know of any interesting alternative covering the same/similar range (24-80 equivalent)? I've also read that a few people appear to be very happy with C-mount vintage options, such as the Angenieux 12-120mm f2/2 (amazing range and constant aperture) but it weights a ton and the whole point is to retain flexibility while shooting. Also another set of issues that I've had with vintage Angenieux in the past has included very noticeable chromatic aberrations, heavy breathing and vignetting (all things that I would want to avoid for this project). However, if you're aware of any vintage lens that might fit the bill I'd be more than open to consider it. Please let me know if you have any recommendations for me, as I could gladly use some. Wish you all a lovely rest of your day and thank you for having taken the time Best, Filippo
  22. STOLEN ITEMS - Zeiss 40mm & 85mm Standard Speeds Hi everyone, I work the Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta (FAVA), we are a non-profit charitable organization located in Edmonton, Alberta. We had a rental this weekend and 2 of our Zeiss Standard Speeds were stolen from the renters shoot. If anyone comes across: 40mm T2.1 S/N: 6947336 85mm T2.1 S/N: 7280603 for sale anywhere, hopefully you'll be able to contact me. You could reach me at, PH: 780-424-4368, EM: rentals@fava.ca & Katrina at production@fava.ca We have a police report and are dealing with insurance, but would love to be able to get the ones from our original set back as they were deeply beloved by our film community. If anyone has any other places I could share this that would be greatly appreciated! Attached are photos of what the lenses look like (not our exact lenses, photos grabbed from Alan Gordons website.) Note that one of them will have a lens cap that says 16mm instead of 85mm.
  23. Hello Cinematography lovers! I hope you're all well! I recently shot a music promo using all natural and golden hour light! Filmed on location in the UK, where normally it's not like this! The budget was so small, like really small! We just managed to get hold of an Alexa for the weekend. We used my Canon EF lenses which I use normally for stills. I was quite impressed with the quality, what do you all think? Thanks for watching! Lee

  25. Hi all. Excited to ask my very first question on this forum! For an upcoming short, I'm trying to achieve a pastel, somewhat low-contrast color palette in a bright daytime exterior, very much like the attached reference image from Vertigo. Being a micro budget project, I don't have the opportunity to pre test a bunch of filters or lenses. Any recommendations on filtration for this reduced contrast, slightly blooming look? For the project, I'm using the Ikonoskop A-Cam DII. I own this camera, and the colors from its Super16 Kodak CCD sensor feel inherently pure and dare I say film-like. I'm pairing it with oldish glass, the Cooke 9-50 Varokinetal (T2.5). I've rented this lens before and it is not only affordable but renders a very creamy three dimensional image. I've attached a sample I shot with this configuration, no filters. Just need to turn that into something less contrasty, more talcumy, more "vintage" for lack of a better word. Thank you! Jall
