Syncronizer help needed

I have managed to get my hands on this old syncronizer: http://www.oscarsdrawings.com/images/syncronizer.jpg

 

I would love to use it but it has no magnetic tape head and no way of playing sound. Does anyone know how i can rig this up with sound so i can use it to sync up, the old fashioned way?

You used to be able get a magnetic head that was mounted on a post arrangement that you could set on or off the mag film. I suspect a full track 1/4" head might do the same job.

 

There were special amps for amplifying the output from the head, however, we used to use the mic input on a tape recorder to do the same job.

 

With the set up you've got, the belt drives for driving the film through the viewer used to occasionally slip, causing lose of sync between the picture and sound.

You might be better looking out for a motorised pic-sync on Ebay. I got mine for £1 a few months ago. There seem to be plenty about now that no-one cuts 16mm. any more They usually have 4 sound heads with one disengageable from the motor for syncing up.

You need what is called a "Sqwak Box" it is a 16mm Mag head and small speaker. Look on Ebay or check with some film schools in your area. They probably don't need them anymore (or even know what it is for)
