Guest Roy Sturkenboom
Hi guys, When i bought the non reflex bolex i had the understanding that i could just run color film without any hassle. When i brought it to the dutch Bolex repair guy, he told me that the older types ( like mine, it orgiens from 1947 ) cant run color film because it's to thick ? The handle that moves the film from frame to frame differers apperently from the newer bolex's such as the Rex 2,3,4 and so on. Could you give me an answer on this matter ? Thanks, Roy
Jean-Louis Seguin
This simplest thing to do is to try some color film and judge for yourself. I doubt very much you will have any problems. Cheers, Jean-Louis
Premium Member Bernie O'Doherty Posted June 4, 2009 Premium Member Share Posted June 4, 2009 Hi Roy, I don't think the film thickness should be a problem. The pressure plate is spring-loaded, and so has an inherent give-and-take design. Depending on the age of the green film (color or black-and-white) the thickness could change ever so slightly. We're talking shrinkage in the maximum range of under half a thousandth of an inch. This would not cause your Bolex any running problems. I suspect the claw needs adjustment. Premium Member Simon Wyss Posted June 4, 2009 Premium Member Share Posted June 4, 2009 Rubbish! Your H camera eats triple thickness. You may load thinner film on the other hand.
Brian Drysdale
My first Bolex was a non reflex (I suspect 1950s) and it ran colour film without any bother. I can't see why they wouldn't design them to run colour film since it was available in the 1940s.

Thanks I have an old non reflex Bolex that is older than dirt. I've run thousands of feet of color film, reversal and negative through it and never had a problem.
