Igor Trajkovski
There are multiple companies producing the C-Stands and Grip Heads, looking the same, using the same mechanisms, so it seems to me there is no copyright violation. OR? Do they pay licensing to the "originator"? Thanks Igor
Mike Lary
There are patents (or pending patents) for folding/nesting leg designs and locking mechanisms (spring loaded grip heads, etc). Any deviations from the original design (one pieced welded) could have patents associated. A patent research specialist would be the right person to ask, though. Mark Dunn
Do I detect the faint sound of axle-mounted flat circular object innovation?

OR? Do they pay licensing to the "originator"? Thanks Igor Copyright is generally considered to be about "texts", and not physical objects. Physical objects are usually covered by patents, which is why the idea of software patents has always been massively contentious. Patents only last a short time, like say 20 years or something, then anyone can use them. love Freya
Walter Royle
There are no copyrights at all. There are now multiple manufacturers of C-stands both standard and mini. American stands are by far the best. They hold the most weight and the grip doesnt cause you to have wrist surgery in 10 yrs.
Gregg MacPherson
There are no copyrights at all....... I'm sad for the original manufacturers, but sort of glad. But I thoght something like a C stand with heads and arm was something that Cinecity in India or similar could make really cheap. But doesn't look like it. Are they locked into contracts making them exclusively for american entrepeneurs? A C stand could be made and sold extremely cheaply. Cheers, Gregg. OR? Do they pay licensing to the "originator"? Thanks Igor Igor, like a couple other people pointed out copyright is different from patent. The patent office used to recommend a publication called "Patent It Yourself". In it the book explains that improving on a design can lead to a new patent or renewal of a patent. Example, if you design a new handle for a door then you get a patent. Someone can add grooves to your handle to make it easier to grasp, and that can lead to a new patent. I don't know the history about C-stands, but they've been around for a while now. That being the case I would think you could design your own and make some improvements on the basic design. As to whether you could take a patent out on that is work for an attorney.

Like the C-stands of DigitalJuice. Just browse ebay and you gonna find of cheapish copies (still expensive for what they are though).
