Eric F Adams
What are the advantage/uses of these convertible umbrellas? ( b and h link below) Instead of the traditional all white. Is it to block or create certain shades? I would like to start using one. Any common practices that are certainly a go to? Shooting on 16mm film. Microbudget. Thanks. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/423625-REG/Impact_UBBW45_45_Convertible_Umbrella.html
Stuart Brereton
The black cover is so you can use it as a bounce rather than as diffusion. They're used mostly in stills photography, but there's no reason why you couldn't use it for movie work. Controlling spill from them can be a pain though.
Ed Conley
For LED or FL bulbs- tungsten will melt those umbrellas.
Premium Member Mark Kenfield Posted February 21, 2018 Premium Member Share Posted February 21, 2018 I use them all the time for broad key or soft fill lights. I've got a range of 7' wide Westcott ones. I think they're terrific - you can create a much neater setup off a single stand (than you can with conventional square frames of the same diameter). They're no good outdoors (to risky in the wind), but for interior, they're an excellent tool.
