Justin Oakley
Hey guys, I’m just wondering if the contents of a standard one ton package are pretty much uniform across the board…no matter where you rent from or whatever. And is any lighting always included? After doing a quick Google search for 1 ton rental, I came across one that had some lights as well—A 4 x 4 kino, some fresnels, etc. but I’ve always kind of understood that grip was pretty much independent of any electrical/lighting resources. with that, I often offer my services/gear to assist with smaller scale productions in my state. I have a hodgepodge of G&E stuff. So I’m wondering if I would consider it a “1 ton” if somebody were to ask “what you got?”. I can usually manage to pack everything into my truck. I don’t have a van, or a box, or even an enclosed trailer (which I have thought about purchasing to make my life a little easier). I’ve got: A couple combos, a couple low boy combos, like (5) C stands, a small baby stand, a bunch of arms and grip heads, (4) full apples, DIY bounce I made forever ago, a handful of cardellinis/Matthellinis, a ton of pony clamps, a couple 4x4 frames, pipe clamps, a handful of baby pins and junior to babies, quacker clamp, some pipe and speed rail, Dana dolly (would that be separate?), 4x4 floppy, couple flags, a little giant ladder. That’s the grip stuff I have, off the top of my head. There are probably a few things I am missing—little stuff and misc tools that come in handy every now and then. And this doesn’t include the lighting I have. If this isn’t a proper package or “industry standard” or whatever, any idea how much I could rent this stuff out for? And should I include lights as well?
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted June 15, 2022 Premium Member Share Posted June 15, 2022 Kind of interested in this as I've an actually pretty similar collection of stuff I've built up over the years, but including some lighting. I occasionally lend it out to buddies, but have rarely charged other than suggesting a charitable donation.
Kyryll Sobolev
you need to research similar service providers in your area in north carolina, the first few searches to come up: 2-ton trailer for $270/day (https://www.shadowsandlightinc.com/2-ton-grip.html) or 1-ton grip truck for $275 and up (http://ashevillecameragriplightingrental.com/grip/) in london, uk: £350/day and up (https://gripvan.com/packages) in toronto, $475/day and up (https://ontariocamera.com/lighting/sprinter-vans) compare your package, quote a few projects, and see what your market tells you

Thanks. So I guess the package does vary…as far as stock.
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted June 16, 2022 Premium Member Share Posted June 16, 2022 I've got more stuff than is in that little van and I don't charge £350/day for it...

Are you referring to the “mini” grip package in that 3rd link? And you charge less?
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted June 16, 2022 Premium Member Share Posted June 16, 2022 I'm being slightly facetious. I'm not really in the business of renting gear, I just have some and sometimes people borrow it. I try to make sure they're reasonably good causes which couldn't otherwise afford things, so I'm not taking work from a real rental house, but that's not so far been much of an issue.
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted June 21, 2022 Premium Member Share Posted June 21, 2022 Generally speaking a 1 ton should have about 10 C Stands about 2 Grip Head Combos Casters for Grip head combos frames up to 8x8 with neg, bounce, diff, and nets (so 6x6 and 8x8. Ideally with Full and half grids for diffs) at least 4 4x4 flops a few skinned diff frames nets at least 2 families of apples (and 2 spare apples) 2x3 and 18x24 sets, one each, but with a spare solid Ideally a meat ax/cutter or wag flag (6x 4) wedges a wall spreader kit (2x4 or speed rail some rigging stuff (c-clamps, furniture clamps, cardis, etc) some adapters (baby/Jr) offset here or there and a Menace Arm kit some speed rail (1 12/ 2 8 and 2 6) There are no lights on a 1ton grip. That's always an add on. For reference this is the copy and paste of a basic 1ton here in LA from a certain low budget rental house: 7 C-Stands; 1 Short C-Ctand; 2 Regular Combos; 1 Baby Offset; 2 Baby Plates; 2 Duckbill Holder; 1 Foamcore Holder; 2 Ceiling Clips; 2 Jr. to Baby Adaptors; 2 Jr. Grip Heads; 2 6" C-Clamp w/ Baby; 2 12" Furni Clamps; 2 Mayfers; 2 Cardillini; 5 Safety Hangers; 1 4-Step Ladder; 8 20lb Sandbags; 4 Full Apples; 2 Each 1/2, 1/4, Pancake Apples; 5 Each #1, #2, #3 Grip Clips; 2 Furni Pads; 1 Each 18x24 Single, Double, Silk; 2 18x24 Solids; 1 Each 2x3 Single, Double, Silk; 2 2x3 Solids; 1 6x6 Butterfly Set. It goes for 85/day or 170/wk. I think it's lacking in a few things vs mine, but it's a good base line.
