  1. Hello all, I want to break out some Single-8 cameras and put them to use again alongside my Super 8 gear. I know that my best option for feeding the camera (at least, in the USA) is to reload Single-8 cartridges with fresh Kodak film on my own. I'm sure I have all of the requisite materials (cartridges, film, rewinds, a dark room, etc.) but, having never reloaded one of these before, I'm wondering if anyone might offer some tips and tricks to make the process go more smoothly. I'm aware that I can't load 50' of Kodak due to the base thickness, so I plan to load 25' into two cartridges. Will these Single-8 cartridges open with a minimum of hassle? I think the much earlier ones were easier but I don't have any of those at the moment. Any thoughts, comments, tips and tricks, or directions to established resources is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  2. HI Stephen, the best advice I can give in this scenario is to test beforehand, especially if it's footage you plan to use as part of that wedding package. But to answer your question, it should work without issue if the camera is working properly. All the camera is doing when rewinding the film is shoving a small length of film back into the feed side of the cartridge, so the film is not actually rewinding onto the core. That is why it's limited in how far it will rewind. I've done it within the last year or so with my Canon using fresh film stock without any issue. You'll want to avoid doing those rewinds at the head or tail of the cartridge though to avoid issues. Make sure you've shot a few feet first or still have several feet remaining. It's kind of funny because I'm on the forum tonight seeking advice on reloading Single-8 cartridges for almost the same reason: doing in-camera effects. Some might question the sensibility of this in today's world of editing but, in my case, I still enjoy shooting stuff for projection just for the fun of it. It's reason enough, I figure. Good luck!
  3. Hi Rick, Interested in the Canon 7-63. Could you email me with a price, please? phantasm0401@comcast.net Thanks much, Scott
  4. If anyone is interested, I have a Canon 1014 XL-S For Sale in "like new" condition with the original box and (I think) most of the original accessories. $650 OBO takes it. Message me if interested. Thanks!
  5. Gold dust? Meaning I should sell all I have as opposed to shooting it? :) Thanks for the input, folks. It looks like we're gonna go with ORWO to fill the remainder of our needs. If it had been my decision to make, I probably would have shot color negative, regardless of what the end product would be. However, that ship has sailed... Thank again!
  6. Hi folks, Looking to purchase some 35mm short-ends and re-cans, preferably 5222 and 5231. We need about 20,000' to complete our project. Please contact me through the board or at obscureimages@comcast.net if you have any leads on where to obtain some. We've purchased almost everything we can find on the west coast, so if anyone has some recommendations for the east coast or elsewhere, please let me know. Thank you!
  7. I live to have still photographers made at me. :D Just kidding. Thanks for the lead on ORWO. For the love of Pete, I can't believe we've never come across these folks. We're gonna have to test some of this for sure. In the meantime, the quest for 5222 and 5231 short-ends continues...
  8. Oh, by the way, we're looking for 5222 primarily but will also use 5231. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!
  9. Hello all, My partner and I have been buying all of the 35mm B&W short-ends and re-cans that we can find for a project we're doing. I think we've purchased just about everything on the west coast. Can anyone point us in a direction on the east coast or elsewhere? We're about 20,000 feet shy of what we need. Thanks in advance!
  10. Hello all, I have my Canon 8-64 T2.4 Super 16 lens for sale on eBay. Please check out item # 120764866511. I am accepting offers on it, so please message me through this forum or through eBay if you are interested. Thanks! PS. I've been told that this lens will work for 2K imaging on RED. I don't know this to be the case for sure, so please contact RED if you're wondering. All I know for sure is that it is one awesome Super 16 lens!
  11. Contact me if you're interested in an S16 Bolex SBM. Everything has been modified for S16, including the viewfinder.
  12. The recent film BLUE VALENTINE was shot on S16. Rob Zombie decided that the look of his HALLOWEEN remake, which was shot on 35mm, was too clean, so he shot his sequel on S16. Not long ago, I did the same thing that Tim did. A friend of mine and I took a bunch of our older 16mm and Super 16mm test footage that had been transferred to video and played it back on a 46" LED LCD HDTV. It looked great! I hope film doesn't die because, if so, I'll die (inside), too. :(
  13. Hello all, I purchased this 1014 XL-S camera when it was new, I am the only owner. The camera is in amazing, like new condition. Over the years, it's only had about 20 - 25 rolls of film through it. Everything functions as it should. It comes with the original packaging and original accessories. This is quite possibly the cleanest 1014 XL-S in the world! Serious inquires only. All serious offers will be considered. If interested, please contact me via private message on this website or at my email address: phantasm0401@comcast.net. Thanks!
  14. Hello all, I'm selling my Canon 8-64 Super 16 zoom lens. Overall, it's in excellent condition. All barrel markings are accurate. Front and rear elements are clean. There's no fungus, scratches or imperfections in the glass. There's only slight wear to the barrel due to normal handling. The lens is in Arri B mount. Serious inquiries only. All serious offers will be considered. Contact me via private message on this website or by email: phantasm0401@comcast.net. Thanks!
  15. Hi Will; Yes, I imagine that converting a projector to S16 might be more hassle than it's worth. Even if you found a 16mm projector that didn't have sound, you'd still run into the issues of trying to re-center the lens and finding a lens that would allow for the entire S16 frame to be projected. Besides, the way that most projector lenses are mounted, it'd probably be impossible to re-center the lens to begin with. One might be able to modify a projector to project Ulta 16mm though.
  16. There's a local lab that I use that will actually take S16 footage that I shoot for testing and print it to a 35mm work print and then project it for me in their projection room. Talk about a fascinating way to watch film! I'd love to have one of my 16mm projectors converted to S16 but I'm not sure if anyone does this. It sure would be a great way of reviewing S16 footage in the privacy of my own home though.
  17. I'm fascinated by the concept of Ultra 16. I have an Eclair ACL that is going to eventually get the U16 treatment from Bernie. I've stalled on doing this because I have a Super 16 ACL 2, so it's not a pressing issue. I'll eventually have it done though. To the original poster (or anyone else who might be interested), if you're looking for a great camera to convert to Ultra 16, I have a complete Canon Scoopic 16M that's for sale. It's the entire original kit including case, batteries, charger, etc. It even has a transformer unit so that the camera can be operated using AC. Anyone who might be interested in the above, please contact me at phantasm0401@comcast.net. I'll consider all reasonable offers. I wouldn't be selling this kit but for the fact that I have a Super 16 Bolex, so I'm covered in both the synch and MOS worlds where it concerns widescreen 16mm shooting. Ultra 16 is gaining more and more support. Certainly, the fine folks at Cinelicious aren't going anywhere and, in fact, they continue to make improvements to their Ultra 16mm work flow. If I didn't own any S16 cameras, I'd be converting all my stuff to Ultra 16 without hesitation.
  18. Hey Tim, Just wondering if your Ostcam is still available for sale. Thanks!
  19. No, you're not hallucinating, I'm looking to purchase another Eclair ACL. I'm looking for an ACL 2 (large electronics base) that has, preferably, a Kinoptik orientable viewfinder. It doesn't matter if it's 16mm or Super 16 as long as it's clean, working, and in good shape. If you have one you're looking to sell, contact me and we'll see what arrangements can be made. I'll spare y'all the whole film-is-awesome-digital-sucks rhetoric because I don't believe that at all. Image acquisition is fun in both worlds. Thanks!
  20. As an FYI for those who may be wondering, Cinevate's Nikon (lens) to Canon DSLR adapter is a wonderful tool, and at a much lower price than others I've seen out there. I'm not affiliated with Cinevate in any way, I'm just passing this info along for those whom might be curious (as I was) about using older Nikkor glass on a 5D/7D/T2i body. I've been testing it for the last couple of days, trying to determine if it would loosen up on me, and it didn't, and the Nikon/Canon combo works wonderfully and the adapter itself is a breeze to use. I'll keep everyone updated if anything goes awry in the future, but at the moment, I'm a very happy camper. :)
  21. I've been using a Nikkor AI 35mm f/1.4 lens on my T2i with stunning (IMO) results. I was shooting today with a Nikkor AI 85mm f/2 and am similarly pleased.
  22. Sounds like the back focus of the lens is off. Take it to a lens tech and have it collimated.
  23. Hi Roger, First, let me say what an excellent short film you've put together. I thought is was well thought out and conceived and I think it really delivers the dramatic gut-punch you were going for, or, in any case, that's how I was affected by it. So, well done! Secondly, the Super 8 footage still looks interesting even though it's mangled. I think your decision to include it was a good one, since it seems to have an emotional truth to it that's in keeping with the subject matter. Love the Scoopic stuff! I've really wanted to get my Scoopic M modified by Bernie, and one day will, but I can't justify the cost right now with the stuff that I've been doing, which is almost entirely digital, and when the occasional film project does come along, I'm already setup with Super 16, so there's no pressing need for Ultra 16. However, I think the Ultra 16 footage in your film demonstrates beyond doubt that it's a viable 16mm format. Okay, so it's not widely accepted or an industry standard, but if the tendency in acquisition formats went toward improvements in film technology instead of digital, I think Ultra 16 would definitely become an accepted 16mm standard and every post and rental house in the world would make provisions for it. Even though Ultra 16 doesn't have as much negative area as Super 16, the concept behind it seems more intuitive and natural; it's a much simpler and cheaper way to achieve wide-screen 16mm images, that's for sure. If I didn't already have Super 16 cameras, I'd figure out a way to move toward Ultra 16. I'll definitely get my Scoopic M modified eventually. Thanks for posting the link; I enjoyed the film!
  24. If anyone deserved a John Cassavetes Spirit-like award, it was Paul.
  25. Hi Tim, I didn't know those things about the Panasonic. Using PL mount lenses is a decided advantage, as is the viewfinder situation you described. There's no way I'd send off my camera for a PL conversion, although I do know a guy who did that with his 7D. Good info, thanks!
