  1. S8 wetgates are available for most of the current scanners so It depends on availability and you preferred scanner.
  2. tested them and hurried back to P+STechnik's pro35 with 'cine'lenses.
  3. I think it really is the look. the few times I used Fuji though, it got stuck in the camera... anybody have the same problem?
  4. sound on MD is compressed in the ATRAC-format, a compression-format that is better dan MP3, but still has weaknesses. maybe the newest MD-recorders with a maximum capacity of 1Gb can record uncompressed PCM. check it out. But at the cost of those new machines you could find a harddisk-based mp3-player with a mic/line-in?
  5. thanks for the links John, DOFmaster is really great! Still have a few questions: What circle of confusion(CoC)- values does Kodak use for their cine products? I found three(!) different values for 16mm. Apparently the ASC recommends 0.0152mm/0.0007inch. Also doesn't the CoC 'grow' with S16? thanks, Stijn
  6. does anybody know of a DOF-calculator to use on Windows? I've heard about these apps for palmtops, but do they exist for Windows/Linux/Mac??? the ones I found googling are either online(usually don't have 'movie' settings) or hardware (and sold out everywhere) thanx
  7. Arri makes the RCU or Remote Control Unit that allowes to program ramps in speed and shutter. The SR3 should be compatible with it. also check if you can find a tiny camera you can screw on the viewfinder of the Bolex. Of course you will have to choose between viewfinder or videotap in this case.
  8. AGFA microfilm microfilm is film used to archive documents. I think its black and white and I am guessing very fine grain but very high contrast for the b/w documents. Propably doesn't have any back layer like Remjet and no motion picture perfs either. but someone that knows more about core types and such should have a look on this website for a real answer. :)

  10. That looks very interesting. I guess most steadicam operators will be thrilled with it's light weight. With the tilted 200' mag it looks very 'Aaton'. Arri designed it this way for handheld use, so I'm not far off. I hope a rental house in Belgium will buy one.
  11. Yeah, I saw something similar in the late 90's whenb Aaton was developping the A-minima. I think I'm going tpo send an email to Aaton and ask for more info.
  12. I'd like to see those Aaton designs!!! I'm a big Aaton fan and if they were to make something like a A-minima for S8 use, I'd absolutely love it. Changeable lenses, a good crystal motor with a good speed range and a reflex viewfinder... They'd have to work something out to improve stability though. Registration pins and adapted S8 cartridges with a good pressure plate, like the ones you can buy online... But Josh also kind o f made this wish list and I must say that I agree with him. The dveloment cost of creating a real pro S8 camera would result in a high price for the machine itself, even in a modular system. But to go back to the 70's Aaton plans, if anybodyhas more info on this...? we should remind Aaton of this plan
  13. not just crystal, also the available speeds are important. I'm trying to find a good S8 cam that runs at 25fps to use for music videos. of course I could run at 24 and have the telecine paly it at 25, the 4% increase wouldn't be a terrible problem, but for syns shots it would be nice. does anybody knoiw of 25fps S8 cam???? I know you can buy one on www.super8sound.com with an 25fps crystal motor, but that leaves you stuck with one speed...
  14. I've had some experience in trying very low-cost multicam registrations and this machine truly is interesting. Tally, sound, video and intercom over Cat5: waw! But when I was fiddling with three ENG camcorders (one betaSP, a digiBeta with RCU + one digital head with SP dock) we had a lot of work matching all cameras. I've even popped open the old SP a few times to correct phase and color on the circuit board. This very nifty device just can't sync all the DV-cameras, it's impossible. by the way, opening up a betaSP is an interesting experience, but do it with someone that knows what he's doing. This way you'll learn a lot and you'll realize you don't need a digibeta with RCU for cine-style gamma, a higher black level or saturated colors: you need a screwdriver!

  16. yeah, day for night could work, but I believe moonlight not to be blue but white. well not really, really white either. It's a tricky color, the moon. I use a 'white' lightsource, but dirty it up with a very light straw or the color that's required in the scene. anyway, I'd urge you to shoot at night, just for the fun of it.
  17. I'd look at Storare's work on Dick Tracy, allthough that's more of a color experiment in stead of composition. There is a videocli by 'cinematic orchestra' that experimented with a, how to say this, upright aspect ratio. What you see on tv is a pillarboxed image with greater height than depth. weird, but interesting. doesn't look very good on standard 4:3 TV but if you put a widescreen TV on it's side and you could also turn the video by 90° perhaps it would have some charme. An of course multilayer, there's something in every corner, Peter Greenaway's films are usually an experiment in filmmaking.

    How about sony's new XDCAM, the first disc system? From what I gather it's an optical disk system that records in MPEGiMX or DVCAM. What is this? Blu-ray? Sony doesn't seem to make a lot of noise on this new system, but then again I've only been shooting film lately.
  20. any working incident light meter will do I guess. I use the Sekonic L398M studio deluxe II. It has a cine-scale. not that you need it: 24fps @172.8= 1/48 25fps @ 180°: 1/50 so anywhere near 1/50 on any working light meter is your shutter. I bought my sekonic for just over $ 200 and I'll propably have it for life. A spot meter for lighting motion picture is not a strict necessity, but you'll learn it has great value on set. If you're going to look for a spot meter, try to find one that has a readout in the viewfinder.
  21. yep, and also check for a power outlet on the elevator roof. Usually ther is one AC-plug for maintenance-tools. should provide enough power for some kinoflo or smaller 'hot' lights. I did this once when the elevator had to be moving also to get the projection of the little window in the doors on the actor's face. But when you're using an elevator with sliding-doors of course....
  22. I think many people have mixed feelings when it comes to Michael Moore. On one hand he criticizes on what's going wrong in his country, for instance the extremely free weapons market in the US and the television-fear-fed growth of weapon-posession. On the other hand he uses sensation aswell to make his point. the boys bringing back the bullets to Kmart, the exploitation of a clearly senile Charlton Heston,... I'm afraid Moore, apart from his social engagement, has also smelled the green bills. I personally prefer his earliest work, Roger and Me, a film with a lot of humour and true concern for 'the cause'. I think Moore also feeds anti-americanism in Europe too much. A lot of so-called anti-Bush people here in Belgium no longer se the distinction between being anti-Bush and beind anti-USA. I peronally hate the Bush administration, but feel this is separate from the American people. As I understand it's voluntary to vote and the elections are being organized on weekdays. For a country that calls itself democratic this is very weird. All too convenient that the average American worker propably can't go to vote. does anybody know when and who will distribute Fahrenheit 911 in Europe?
  23. I think they are shot in 24fps. This way both the conversion to video in NTSC and PAL are easier to make. Series like Friends, the Sopranos, Six feet under,... are all very popular in Europe too and speeding up from 24fps to 25fps(PAL) is an easy one too. but I'm not sure about all this. does anyone really know?
  24. Minidisc Walkman only has an analog output, the headphones-jack. Older models have a Line-out (-10dBv). So I'm afraid you'll have to record your sound ye olde way unless you can lay your hands on a MD home deck with an optical or coaxial digital output. yeah what is low-cost? I'd say the Shure FP24 is your best option. It's the most basic ENG-style audiomixer I know about. shure FP24 product page I've also seen small amateur mixers being used, but they aren't tough enough for real field use. The German brand Hama, known from it's video and photo accessories, used to make a small desktop mixer that required 12VDC over an adaptor. Of course video-amateurs and hobbyists soon hooked up a 12V battery and started using it as a field mixer.
