  1. Anyone have a manual for a Morse G3 processing tank? I've done a few rolls and they turn out fine but I'm sure there's more info to know. Thanks!
  2. Can you post a photo of this effect? I have used both the XL2 and XL1 for years with no issues like what you describe. Is this problem only happening on your computer monitors? If so, that's normal. It has to do with the pixel aspect of computers (square) and tvs (not square pixels). But it shouldn't happen on a standard television. Try viewing it on an NTSC tv. That's the only thing I can think of.
  3. Shadow and Sprit are two kinds of telecine machines that scan the film frame-by-frame to edit on the computer. The nuances and goods/bads of each are well documented on this and other sites (search for each word). Anamorphic is an optical way to squeeze a wider frame of view onto the film. It looks skinny when you see the negative but stretches back out when projected through an anamorphic lens. An optical process does this with the original negative and prints it to a positive. A DI is a way to do this digitally through the computer. Hope that helps. I'm not sure about the black sock trick and would love to hear more.
  4. I do agree with you about spot mters being great (i use one myself) but I think Matthew needs to start with an incident meter. Spots give very specific results on what they're looking at not taking into account the surrounding average, which an incident will give. You can get an add-on spot meter for the L358 in the future when you're ready. Start with the dome, it will give an overall average. All light meters (most anyways) are telling you how to expose for middle grey. A spot meter in this situation can be dangerous if you don't understand Zone system and are able to adjust exposure accordingly. Just my advice.
  5. Sekonics will last you more than a few years. I've had a 508 for almost 10 years now and it works as well as it did when I got it. Definitely a good investment. Take care of it and it ill last a long time. Also remember the L358 will give you readings at 180degree shutter, so if you shoot at a different speed you'll need to compensate Do that with this formula: Exposure = Frames per second x 360 / Shutter Angle Examples for common angles 24fps x 360 / 180degrees = 48 Exposure = 1/48th second 24fps x 360 / 220degrees = 39.2 Exposure = 1/40th 24fps x 360 / 150degrees = 57.6 Exposure = 1/60th (or 1/50th to over expose a bit)
  6. Actually, to revise my earlier post (Since I just ordered a truck-load of film from Kodak): With a student discount, the price for S8 film is: 7265 and 7266 BW Reversal - $7.40 7280 Ektachrome 64t - $9.40 Gerard, you have to call Kodak to get an answer. But here in the US the qualifications are: - Make sure you are at an approved film school. Call Kodak to find out. - Download the Educational allowance form from the site. - Get a professor to sign the form along with your student id number, school name, course and other info - Make a copy of your student ID card - Fax both the form and the copy of your ID to the appropriate kodak fax number for your region - Call them a few minutes later and verify the order It's very easy to do and takes only a small amount of effort, and you save about half from most retail film stores. A cart of 64t is $21 here at our University CO-OP. So $9 is a great deal!
  7. Unfortunately I think you're gonna have to buy a full version of Premiere to do this effectively. Are you a student? There's some nice discounts on Adobe and Apple products if you are.
  8. Don't you have a light meter?
  9. It depends on the light situation and the shutter speed. Or are you asking something I am not getting?
  10. There are many folks who do this with a laser printer on clear leader. Although it is usually for titles and such, not images. And the leader gives you the sprockets. I believe you need to buy leader that is coated, which you can get at Christy's Editorial. Otherwise the toner won't stick to the acetate.
  11. Yes, direct from Kodak is the cheapest I have found. There is a form on their website called the educational allowance form. You fax that along with your student ID and get a really nice discount. Call the number on the form or website to get specific prices. If I remember correctly, S8 carts of BW are like $7.50 and Color is around $11 or so. In 16mm, a 400' roll of bw is like $45, which is a great price.
  12. I've done it with my Canon XL2 and a f384 pinhole. The major thing was I had to turn the gain waaaay up to get any image, and alot of post to get it looking right. I'd imagine you'd have to have some fast film in there and push the crap out of it to get an image with a f256 or higher pinhole. I have a 4x5 pinhole camera that is an f231 and with ISO400 the exposure in bright sun is 2 seconds. A cloudy day is 6 seconds.
  13. Man this site sucks... I mean consistently sucks. A few people always ruin it for everyone. Jim, Footage looks great. I am excited about the RED coming to Austin rental houses someday! Keep it up, looks like things are moving along.
  14. You should be able to find a high end Canon like the 814xl-s or possibly a 1014xl-s for around $400 on ebay. I use the 814 xl-s and it is absolutely wonderful. THe top-end Nikons are great too, although they seem to be a bit more pricey than the Canons in my limited searching.
  15. Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence, Faces and Opening Night - She is truly amazing... Maggie Cheung in In The Mood For Love Orson Welles in Citizen Kane - and anything he did. Peter Sellers and Shelley Winters in Lolita Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love - I know, he sucks in general but was perect for this role. Martin Landau in Ed Wood Marcello Mastroianni in Fellini's 8 1/2 Humphrey Bogart in Treasure of the Sierra madre A quick list...
  16. Antonio, they don't process it, they send it out somewhere. Johnny, do you still have the stub? Call the number and complain. I doubt anyone at the actual store will know anything at all, but there's gotta be a main number to call and get some kind of answer.
  17. If you're looking for specific projector models, my Sankyo Sound 600 runs both 18 and 24, fwiw.
  18. It would be very simple to rotoscope the basketball in After Effects or possibly FCP.. Try making two layers of the same video on the timeline, the bottom being black and white, the top color with an eight point garbage matte. Then keyframe the matte points each frame to follow the ball bouncing. After Effects masks will be much cleaner, but you might have good luck in FCP.
  19. I've used Apple's Shake with great results. It's surely not the top-end of software, but it is affordable and powerful. I was able to get the results I wanted, where Final Cut and After Effects couldn't.
  20. Hmm. It is an interesting idea. I have, in the past, looked at my magnasync moviola and imagined 2 layers of film running through it to print titles or make copies, but never went any further. It seems it could possibly work, although without any color controls... i guess black and white is all you'd be able to accurately print unless there's some sort of filter system. One of my photo enlargers, an omega d5500, has a pretty cool color correction system that uses 3 sliding color plates to mix cyan magenta and yellow to your liking. If you have the parts and the inclination, it might be worth trying.
  21. Worked fine for me. What program are you reading it in? I used Preview and Acrobat Pro and both work great. Thanks again Grant!!
  22. Does anyone have a manual for a Canon 814xls in a pdf or other emailable format? Or perhaps one you could scan? I appreciate it!
  23. Yeah I don't think i'll get a dupe made anyways. I'll definitely be getting the print cleaned though.
  24. WOW, lots of specific opinions on a movie you haven't even seen! Must be an effective trailer  And no, larger theater productions won't be on imdb, afterall it's the "internet MOVIE database"
