  1. I have been using a method that I borrowed off Dan Cornwall. I grab any lost Camp chair bag at any outdoor function and keep colors in it. I keep a selection of each color and diffusion in each bag and when a light goes out a bag goes with it. you have a good selection right there at the light ready for you. I keep about six bags ready filled with gel. It seems to work pretty good. I have my party gels in one. for smaller cuts I have a small file box either the plastic or the metal ( the metal ones last longer 6x12x12) I keep plenty of each color in a file folder labeled ready to go. I have one box for color and one for diffusion. I used to used the segregated milkcrate but got tired of someone dumping it over and it spilling or someone just making a mess of it. with the chair bags each light gets its own bag so the cuts are at hand immediately and go back immediately. no cross contamination. It takes a little more time on the front end and a little more space in the truck. It works for me, it might work for you.
  2. I gaffed a feature called "Like Moles Like Rats." two years ago. It was a long process of CGI and effects for a low budget sci-fi movie. I am asking that all you guys in LA go and check it out. It will be shown on the 28th of March at the Fairfax theater at 6pm as part of the Digital HD film fest. I am asking all of you to go and check it out. It is a film that I am really proud of. I accept all criticism of the film and my work. It was a true labor to bring this story to the screen. We have representation right now but I would love to have a full house. I unfortunately will not be there however the director will. Thanks Robert Duke PS the website is www.Likemoleslikerats.com
  3. Before you make the entire westward journey, are you willing to start from the bottom again. It maybe where you will need to start unless you already have contacts with a key or a DP. You might also look to boston as they are exploding with production right now. Traffic is not so bad just something to deal with. Buy a GPS unit and it will help immensely. Avoid the 10 and 405. the 101 can be bad at certain times a GPS will help route you around traffic with minimal problems. I thought it was the best investment I ever made. It shouldnt take much time once you get your number in the hands of some stand up folks. Call the rental houses and leave your number with them. take as many Mandy.com BS jobs to meet people as you can, go hang out at LAfilmschools and offer up to students. They know people who know people who are looking for people. Be patient, keep at least a couple grand as back up cash in case you get in a pickle.
  4. Try either adding starch to your water or flat sprite to your water. add in small increments until it feels slightly sticky. these work but depending on weather conditions you may have to touch it up throughout the day. test which works best for you. All else fails add small tabs of ATG tape to the corners to help hold it in place.
  5. It can all depend on the vehicle you are mounting to. Typically I like to strap pulling out and down crossing the straps. you really have to be careful with the turn of the tires and avoid the strap crossing the open wheel area. I cant find any photos small enough to load up. PM me and I will send you some shots of mounts.
  6. I believe there isnt a tube in that wheel. The tire is tubeless. Those three bolts actually hold the rim together and the air inside. I could be wrong but...
  7. Contact Onno, he posts here quite often and might be able to tell you who in NYC has one. Also Modern studio used to make a similar system. Since you are in NYC contact Jimmy McMillan, JMAC. He has all kinds of specialty rigging gear. He probably has something that would work.
  8. Wider lenses and faster frame rate can help if you cannot get it any other way. Look at the solid grip system, you could mount a single over head trolly and shoot using a weaver- steadman. That would eliminate the jib movement. The fisher 11 is not designed to take the weight of the filmair jib. That is part of the problem. There is the fisher center mount which is designed to put a jib on the 11. to raise the jib over the table use risers on the center mount. The dolly would need to ride on track using wheel trays in stead of the fisher 11 wheels. the rubber wheels are too soft to add a jib to the dolly and be safe. I think you could do it with the fisher 11 and the filmair. I think for rock solid something like the Doggicam slider or the solid grip system trolly would be more in line with what you want.
  9. I started last month looking to replace my aging Dodge Diesel PU. I started looking at the options of moving into a smaller truck or wagon. I was appalled that the mileage for Dodge, Gm, and Ford vehicles was dispicable. even Toyota and Nissan have slacked off on their mileage over the years. Maybe GM would make up for their losses if they started offer a more competitive product. Hopefully the Gm employees will see that they will take a huge loss if they take the buyout options. I think the UAW needs to open its eyes to what it will do by replacing employees in a buyout.
  10. put a color meter to it and use minus green on the light. Windshields have a 1/8 -1/4 green hue to them. A little minus green will do the trick.
  11. I think they stopped manufacturing lighting in the 50's or 60's. I know that Kliegel was a dominant force as was Bardwell. I think some manufacturers "borrowed" manufacturing styles from others. some also just repackaged other manufacturers gear and resold it. as Helix and RPS did with Ultralights, Mole.
  12. Jeremy, Congrats on graduating! Mike Kelly just had twins! Let me know if there is anything I can do.
  13. Just starting to bite my nails a little lookin at the calender.
  14. I received a rumor that the impending resolution to the WGA strike was just a rumor being floated by the producers to sling mud on the wga. It was intended as the rumor goes to frustrate the below the line crew and make the WGA unpopular. any one else hear this?
  15. Hollywood scene dock made lights early on and then made only grip gear, some where in the 80's they went under and the name was purchased by the guys at Pyramid films. They made some stuff but then focused their manufacturing on the Bardwell McCallister name they purchased later. They were making some nice grip stuff but now they are focusing on HPL technology. See their website and Ad in AC. some cool lighting.
  16. Billy grip=Onkybonk=platypus=beadboardclamp=duckbill clamp=Any others?
  17. Look up gyoury? I think I spelled it right? They make a dimmable fluorescent that is battery powered. Alternatively you can get a 12v trouble light. It uses a 12v 50w medium base lamp (looks just like a household bulb). These bulbs are available at autozone and walmart. I am sure there are other cheap solutions but arent there always.
  18. Try Luka. Or even Modern studio rents their gear.
  19. Phillip, Climbing and rope rigging is different than rigging cable and cable cams. The High tensions required for cable is very dangerous. And expensive. I suggest you talk to Harry Donovan, or Jay Glerum. Harry donvoan wrote the book on rigging. They would be the people to talk to. Openly I must say that what you are attempting should be considered with utmost gravity of the consequences of your actions. I am NOT saying that it is Impossible but why go through recreating the years of experience that Aerial camera systems have poured into the subject rather than hiring a professional to do it. An internet forum is not the place for this question. Answering it opens up all involved into serious legal responsiblity issues.
  20. you need to hire a professional rigger to do this. Answering your question would open any of us up to liability in the event of your death.
  21. Since you are shooting digital and on a sound stage, dont worry about correcting back to daylight unless you want to use some color diferences in the office. like a desk light that is tungsten, or something like that. look around your house, or apartment. look at the light coming in the windows. direct or indirect, the light you will notice is from a HUGE source. So to duplicate that you want as Big a source as you can get. If you want indirect light like soft even light use a large bounced source. you can use several lights to increase lumens, or several bounces to sculpt direction. If you want the hard shaft light use a Big fresnel. Use the largest Diameter light not the Highest wattage light, although high wattage will help too. Define what you want it to look like and work in that direction.
  22. I am sorry Warwick but the Pee wee is actually narrower. The Fisher eleven is 20 3/8" wide with all steering functions, while the Peewee is 20" wide. the wheels can be set in line with the dolly chassis and still steerable. I like both dollys. If I had to have a small dolly my heart is with fisher, but practicality is with the peewee. I just dont like the registration on the wheels with the peewee. Chapman also has classes.
  23. Sorry I had a couple and got on the computer. But I think I was just givin' the right on!
  24. The Film & Television Action Committee (FTAC) was formed in Hollywood in December 1998 to address the issue of the Outsourcing of the American film workers jobs (Runaway Production). FTAC is a democratically structured, volunteer, grassroots, non-partisan, single-issue organization dedicated to recovering American film jobs that have been lost to the 19 foreign countries due to unfair trade practices. FTAC is supported and endorsed by these unions: IATSE Locals 695, 871 (by a vote of its membership, supported the FTAC 301a petition, not FTAC the organization) , 44, 728, 720, and 600. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG), Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA), Studio Utility Employees Local 724 (LIUNA), International Brotherhood of Teamsters International, and Local?s 399, 355, 391, 509, 592, IBEW Local 40, Plasterers Local 755, UA Plumbers Local 78. In addition, the Florida Motion Picture and Television Association, the cities of Burbank, Santa Monica, West Hollywood and Glendale CA, Pittsburgh PA, Jersey City and Clifton NJ, Hollywood Center Studios, Michaelsons Catering, Fantasy II Film Effects, International Studio Services, History for Hire, Jackson Shrub Supply. Along with many other businesses that service the film industry and tens of thousands of rank and file Entertainment Workers who support the 301a petition. Currently FTAC is Represented by a Washington DC based Trade Law Firm Stewart and Stewart. With the attorneys? help we are focused on the filing of a section 301a petition to negotiate with the 19 foreign countries, to comply with the trade agreements that they have signed with the U.S. FTAC opposes ?economic runaways? that move from one nation to another purely for artificial, trade distorting financial incentives. FTAC does NOT oppose ?creative runaways? that shoot in other nations purely for creative reasons. We support the concept of world labor solidarity between the film workers of all nations, and the healthy development of national film industries. FTAC is an integral part of the global fair trade movement and actively supports fair trade policies that place human need above corporate greed.
